SOCK IT 2 ME (KAYTRANADA REMIX) // MISSY ELLIOTT Stumbled across this remix of one of Missy Elliott's earlier tracks from 1997 about 2-3 weeks ago and I've been listening to it non-stop, seriously. On the weekend I was at Laneway festival in Melbourne and during Flume's DJ set he dropped this track and I think that's testament to how good it is. Kaytranada manages to take an already good song and make it his bitch. All hail Kaytranada the new god of remixes. Oh and it's free to download here
PILGRIM // MØ Karen Marie Ørsted A.K.A MØ is a new girl on the scene and is already being hailed as the Danish Grimes. MØ's music however has stronger R&B and soul vocals and influences. Check her out - you won't be disappointed.
GIVE ME YO' MOOMBAH // DOS BORRACHOS
I'm really digging emerging genre moombahton recently, a fusion of reggaeton and house music moombahton is not going away anytime soon. This remix of Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' 1999 track 'Got Your Money' is fun with a modern twist
THROWN LIKE FURS (KIKI HITOMI MIX) // EVIAN CHRIST x VELVET UNDERGROUND Ms. Hitomi, a singer, scientist and illustrator is one part of the London based band King Midas Sound. I was cruising through soundcloud one day and found this absolute jem of a mash-up (a dying breed nowadays) featuring Evian Christ, who recently toured with Purity Ring and a Velvet Underground song from the 60's composed by Lou Reed - dope!
WALSH // WISHING I have no idea who the elusive WALSH is but I found this track of his sampling vocals from Disney's 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It's a bit of a trip - pun intended - down memory lane. It reminds of Pogo's track 'Alice' which is also purely made from samples from another Disney classic, Alice in Wonderland.
PURPLE // ONLY YOU Atmospheric and syruppy are the two words I would use to describe this track. With fat synth, 808s and deep vocals this track sure can create an electronic mood. Luis Dourado, a Portuguese producer perhaps better know as PURPLE and signed to Terrain Ahead is a hard man to find much information on. This track is from his latest EP which is self titled.
BANANA TREE FEAT. YADi // RUDI ZYGADLO
Rudi Zygadlo, signed to Pictures Music, recently collaborated with British songstress YADi on this highly emotional and explosive ballad-like track. You can almost feel the drawn out bass undulations in your bones! One of the best collabs I've heard in a while.
YOU // WINTERS Winters is from Melbourne but spent most of 2012 living in Stockholm, Sweden. Not sure if this is the full track or not but I'm loving it, dreamy vocals and an interesting ambiance, Winters' self titled album released in December is available for free download here.
LET'S TAKE IT SNOW // ELVI/DUNIAN
ELVI/DUNIAN is a collaboration between Riga based music producers Elvi and Dunian and they're Latvian. I can't find much info on these dudes, but I think this experimental track speaks for itself. Would love to see this played live. Groooovy.
FRONTIN' // JAW JAM This is a decadent remix of Pharell's 'Frontin', the genre is debatable whilst Jaw Jam himself classifies it as a house bootleg others may call it post dubstep. Whatever the genre, this track goes off. Jaw Jam A.K.A 19-year-old Will DiMaggio is from New Jersey and is known to have a penchant for R&B songstresses and bass. He flips his tracks and features chopped up/screwed down vocals and synths on the regular. Lucky for you this track is available here for free download and all you have to do is like his Facebook page, dope!
I FORGET YOU // BAGO Dark R&B, strong bassline and with electrifying vocals by Bago, an LA songstress - think Amy Winehouse x Lana Del Rey. She recently released a killer album entitled 'Sunday's Best' which was entirely produced by The Hundreds' producer/rapper Alexander Spit. Bago describes her tunes as music for the screwed, blued, and tattooed. I dig that. This is by far the standout track from the album but the rest of the album is well worth checking out as well.
SLOW DRE (LIVE ON TRIPLE J'S 'LIKE A VERSION') // ALT-J Chances are you've heard of this British indie rock quartet (unless you've been living under a rock.) Recently Alt-J appeared live on Aussie radio station Triple J to play this song - a mash-up of Kylie Minogue's 'Slow' and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's 90's classic 'Still Dre.' What sounds like a strange combination at first this track really comes together to create a unique sound that I've only ever heard from Alt-J. *Unpopular opinion*: I think I may like this better than 'Breezeblocks', not sure why but this just really resonates with me.
