“Mordecai?” Nate was happy for the chance to latch onto something else. “That’s quite an interesting name. Biblical, isn’t it?” He took a long swig of his glass, willing himself to move past his slip. “Oh, it’s Nathaniel. Nate, if you want. Either one is fine. Nate’s a bit easier to say.” 

Mordecai chuckled. “It was a family member’s name before mine. I believe my parents named me in honor of them.” He replied with a small shrug. “Nate...it is a pleasure to meet you.” He replied with a kind smile.

“You know, I really do think that guy would look better if someone rearranged his face. How about you? That nose is just begging to be broken, right?”

“Violence doesnt teach people proper lessons. It only fans their anger and distaste.” Mordecai replied as he took a sip of his wine.

As per her normal nightly schedule when she isn’t able to sleep, she either goes out on a hunt or she’ll go and train at the Sanctuary. While she is on a hunt she may not kill at all, but for her it was the ambience of being out in nature with her weapon strapped to her thigh. Central Park at night when it’s empty is one of the most peaceful places for her. Anna had stopped just for a second to look at her phone as she’d received a text when she heard a twig snap behind her. In a flash she turned with her dagger at the person’s throat.

Mordecai blinked when he felt the cool metal against his throat, blind eyes flickering with surprise for a moment before they hardened. “In the current environment where people are at each other’s throats, do you think this action is the smartest?” He asked, milky white eyes boring down into the woman in front of him as he waited for her next move.

Sophia raised a brow when she felt his hand around her hips and the woman mirrored his playful smile. “Yes, you did move a lot,” she nodded, “and it made for a more thrilling chase, not knowing which parties you’d be at.” The shifter smiled thoughtfully as she leaned against him, “You’re more youthful than all the other men I’ve met,” she told him, “who needs a prince anyway? I think I’ll just put my trust in a witch.”

Mordecai laughed at the comment of being youthful. “I wish my bones still felt as youthful as you say.” he sighed, smiling down at her. “Age is catching up to me...I am not the man I once was.” He needed to pick his fights more carefully, look more to delegations and politics then actions. “Just as long as you pick the right witch, you will be fine.” he replied with a hum, feeling someone walking towards the banister. He pulled his hand away, not wanting his actions to gain unwanted attention for the recent widow.

At his remark, she laughed and it was as though she heard a very good joke, “Mordecai my dear, you keep people at a polite distance, even your warmth is calculated.” At least, it felt like that for Sophia, then again, perhaps it was her own closed off and carefully contrived personality that’s making her think everyone else is like her.

“I have people I am close to.” He argued with a playful smile, stepping closer as he tucked his cane under his arm. He bravely put a hand on her hip, the motion could either be taken flirtatious or friendly. “I am just old and like to play the long game with creating friends.” He shrugged, looking out at the skyline he couldnt see. “Remember, I use to move a lot.”

She let out a soft laugh, “You and your secrets, Mordecai,” she turned around to glance at the man, “I must admit I do not like being at a disadvantage but you make it so thrilling and oh so worthwhile,” she stretched out an arm to look at the jewelry she wore, some of which have been given by the witch to tease her of her penchant for stealing. “I wonder what I’ll have to do for you to share a secret of your own,’ she mused.

Mordecai hummed softly, offering the woman a gentle smile as she spoke. “We both know my knowledge is well earned. Only fair to make those around me work for it, hm?” He mused with a chuckle. He cocked his head as he listened to the soft clink of a bracelet. “I am sure you can charm something out of me.”

         He was not one to maim or kill mortals who attempted to talk smartly with him. Noah had dozens of lifetimes to reflect such poor behavior. Of course, the other was right, but that’s where Noah’s stubborn nature reared it’s ugly head once more. He’d not admit that fact. So, he shrugged. If he wished to take a life, he could do it in the snap of his own very fingers. And Noah found, there was much more respect (and even power) in letting people live. To him, it was rather childish to kill people who did not go along with your own beck and call. “Either you may have known them well or you’re just another bleeding heart.”

“No. Just intelligent and understanding of the situation we are all in.” Mordecai arched a brow. “For a man who has lived a long time I was under the impression you would be as well.” Mordecai closed his book with a soft sigh. He had no time for arrogant ancients....they may be immortal, but they forget just how venerable they were. “Seems I am wrong...pity.”

Nate’s cheeks grew warm, the shame welling in his chest. He did his best to keep its presence from his voice as he replied, “Either way, I guess I shouldn’t be snapping at random people in bars… Not a great way to make friends, I guess.” He was thankful the man wasn’t angry. Nate had a tendency to rub people the wrong way, but he was working on it. He’d always been told it was his biggest flaw. “I’m, uh… what’s your name?” he asked, attempting to bury the former subject completely. 

“Only if you wish to make some, no it isnt.” Mordecai replied with a small shrug of his shoulders. “Either way, you are entitled to privacy and being free of prying eyes.” Mordecai smiled gently, dipping his head. “Mordecai Killian. And you if I may ask?”

Nate looked at him for a moment, realized his mistake, and struggled to hide his horror. “Oh,” he mumbled, “um, no, sorry, that was my fault. I, uh… I thought…” He swallowed hard, reopening his book solely for the purpose of hiding behind it. “I’m, um… I’m sorry.”

Mordecai could feel that the other was embarrassed, the man chuckling softly. “No worries, my friend! You didnt know.” Mordecai smiled warmly at the other, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “You have every right to be frustrated that someone is staring at you; eye sight in tact or not.”

Nathaniel sat undisturbed in his corner booth of the bar, methodically flipping the pages of his novel while the rain pelted the window on which he rested his head. Suddenly, he heaved a deep sigh, forcefully shutting his book on the tabletop. “You know, I can see you looking at me,” he growled. “Can I help you with something?”

Mordecai had thought he had been staring off into nothing until the man spoke, making the blind witch blink his cloudy eyes as his brow furrowed. “Oh! I am terribly sorry, I was unaware.” The older witch offered a kind smile to the other, truly embarrassed.

Mordecai had listened to the strikes and felt their powerful foot movements in the floor, watching in his own way as the two fought. He detested the Sanctuary. So barbaric and a reason to keep tensions strong. Especially now. And with one of the Davenports walking around like some damn peacock when he should be helping his kin only made Mordecai’s blood boil. “Shouldnt you be helping Dinah with your pack?” He asked, arching an eyebrow at the man as he walked past.

“How does it work, your ability?“ Sophia asked, “is there a spell somewhere to help yo grow wings? To possess an animal maybe?“ How was it that some mortals turned to animals and other wielded that power to turn them into one. She looked back at Mordecai and smiled, he was such a gentle human and there was a quiet strength to him that she liked. “I’m sorry if I’m being a tad curious tonight, old friend, you don’t have to answer any of that.”

“There are ways, but I choose not too.” He replied honestly with a small shrug. “I have my way of getting around...but I prefer to keep that a secret.” He winked at the woman with a gentle smile. Mordecai shook his head slightly, stepping closer. “People ask me many questions, Sophia.” He replied honestly. “Few get to see behind the curtain.”

Blaze rolled his eyes as the other grumbled and stormed away. Just as he was about to get back to what he was doing he noticed another man from the corner of his eye. He was was about to say something when he noticed the book in his hand. His eyebrow raised noticing the Braille when it suddenly occurred to him that the man was most likely blind. “I’m sure you get unnecessary opinions too, huh?” He stated out loud. Whether the other knew it was towards him was a different story.

Mordecai’s hand stopped when the other spoke to him, his head lifting ever so slightly as he arched a brow. “I do, but I have a more kind way of approaching it.” He replied, cocking his head towards the other. “Being combative only attracts more attention.”

She couldnt care less about the way he responded to her anger. The way he rolled her eyes at her only making her more like a fool once again. More like the unknowing kid she used to be. “Curious? Can’t a woman go to New york and have life these days. There are only very few who could ever enjoy living their whole life in a swamp” she defended herself, her heart skipping a beat when she realized what he was getting at. For a moment, she feared he had leads. Intel about who might be causing the scene, and this someone being her father. But she realized he was asking, so he didn’t really know. “One of those missing wolves was my mother…. Fact is, I have not seen my father in at least ten years. Distanced myself from him and his actions years ago. - You don’t think he is in town, do you? He would never leave his precious home… right?” the man didn’t deserve to see her fear, but she feared she was unable to hide it from her voice. How frightened she felt only by the thought of him, or any relative, being in new york.

Mordecai arched a brow at the woman as her fear for the idea of her father being back here resinated in her tone. If she was faking, she was a good actor. After a few moments Mordecai’s face softened, the man sighing gently. “You would know better then me.” Mordecai replied with a gentle hum.

“That’s funny. – I didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion.” The hunter squinted looking over to the other before leaning back in his chair. The blood stains on his shirt were bound to be questioned. But Blaze wasn’t too bothered by the looks he had received. Besides, there have been worse things that could be spotted in New York. His work as an officer allowed him to be able to find people easier than others. The poor soul being found was never too lucky when it came to him.

Mordecai was listening to the interaction from afar, his hands nimbly running over the page of his book as he read the Braille. It seemed the rather rude man had some blood on his shirt, but the blind witch couldnt tell. After all, how could he. The other huffed at the rude man’s comment, grumbling something before stalking off. Mordecai arched a brow but said nothing; just continuing to ‘read’ his book.

          “I know how easy it is to kill a vampire, I have done so to many myself.” Typical of Noah, always having something to retort. It was hard to come full circle to sympathize with what happened to the innocent, Noah suffering from a nihilistic state of mind for, easily, hundreds of years now.

“Good. Even more reason to how you have no excuse to act like a fledgling and bite your tongue.” Mordecai replied simply, arching a brow. He had no patience for those that smiled in the misfortune of others. Rivalry aside, now was not the time to mock the dead.

“A pie,“ the woman said excitedly, “what kind is it? You should invite me over so I can give it a try,“ Sophia would act more coquettish around the witch had it been their first few meetings, but the knowledge of what she was gave her some liberty, in a way, letting the pristine image to fall once in a while around his presence.

The shifter released his arm as she moved towards the railing, the buzzing of New York traffic almost just a faint noise below them. She closed her eyes and listened, felt the breeze on her skin. “Mordecai my dear, have you ever wondered how it feels to be a bird? To just fly away.”

Mordecai chuckled softly, smiling at the woman. “You know you are welcome anytime.” He replied with a nod. After all it was just him at his place, so he wouldnt be able to eat the whole thing himself.

The man felt her let go, walking towards the ledge of the railing. Mordecai hummed softly, cocking his head. “I am sure you have experienced what it feels like.” He replied gently with a smile.
