Sometimes the tension between who we are right now and the new self we’re working on becoming is a LOT. Today feels crunchy. I’m aware of allllll the ways I’m failing at being my future self. I can’t think of anything I’m doing right. I’m frustrated. Impatient. Willful. And here’s how I see it. I have two options to soothe the crunchy feelings: 1. tap into my habitual comforts, the ways I am used to making myself feel better PRO: these practices don’t take a lot of mental/emotional energy; they’re easily accessible because I’m used to them, so may be able to soothe crunchy feelings quickly CON: if I self-soothe in a way I typically regret afterward (overworking, drinking), it may lead to greater frustration later (doesn’t necessarily have to — that’s a choice — but want to acknowledge the possibility) 2. consider how my future self would self-soothe when she’s feeling crunchy PRO: perfect opp to practice a new habit/response; give my mind + body a new association b/w this feeling + this form of soothing; gather data on new self-care option CON: this takes mental/emotional energy (is that energy available?); potential that a new practice doesn’t help relieve the crunchy feeling (as quickly or at all) 🗣 Neither one of these options is “correct.” There are no answers, only choices. You can do the whole “this one is morally superior because <insert reason here>” but recognize that is a judgment your mind is making based on an existing belief, which is revealing your past programming and not necessarily your potential. (Then again, not *not* necessarily — only you will know.) Point is: the choices themselves are neutral. What makes either one interesting is your thought(s) about it. Haven’t made my decision yet. I’m off to buzz my head and shave my legs and mull some more. Which, I guess, is a decision in itself. 🖤 P.S. Want support doing your own future-self work? Ohhh… 🤔 I don’t have to keep feeling disappointed in myself! I was thinking of the saying, “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” But, like, if *you* are the one causing the pain, why not just quit it? The pain of behaving in ways you constantly regret. The pain of wasting another night binging Netflix instead of practicing your art. The pain of constantly telling yourself you’ll spend time on your hobby tomorrow, or next week, or when things calm down at work. You know that old joke where a guy goes to his doctor and says, “Doc, it hurts when I do ~this~!”? And the doctor says, “Well, stop doing that.” Stop doing that. Do something else for a little while. You know, even if just for novelty’s sake. Spice of life! 😅 I’m being silly, but honestly I had a moment earlier this year where I was just wallowing in my own disappointment about how I keep making the same choices I tell myself I’m going to stop making, and how I spend my time doing things I don’t care about and then feel frustrated that I have no time for my interests … and it just hit me that, like, ~I can change those things~. My shoulders are back. Head high. Twenty-plus women, women I’ve come to know over the last three months in our mastermind, are walking at a glacial pace around the room. The instruction from our coach: walk how our number one core desired feeling would walk. And slow down. Into the body. Slow. Into the feeling. Slower. The curtains are drawn. The mirrors along the wall of the dance studio have been covered by long black drapes. There’s just a soft glow from the shaded windows and the dimmed red lights above. I am walking tall, open. And I am weeping. I am, for the first time in my life, really seeing how my astrology, my human design, my gene keys, are at work in my life. How they’re already available to me to lean into even more deeply. The thought I keep having: Everything I am belongs to me, but not only to me. Because I know when I fully allow myself to live my astrology, to live the experiment of my design, to live the contemplations of my gene keys — I have an inherent service to give the world. The Most Me, the Me-est Me is not only the best me for myself, it’s the best me for the world. I suddenly feel a deep sense of the privilege of being myself, of joy in the responsibility for the part I have to play here. A totally unforgettable life-reorienting moment. I am three for three on my new daily morning routine this week! Making one small tweak to it starting tomorrow — two things I had back-to-back weren’t working out for me that way. So, gonna try a small adjustment and see if that works better. (If it’s not a clear improvement, back to the original for a few more days to see if this particular habit just needs more repetition.) I’m keeping up with my writing program! BUT … I’m really wading through mental molasses on this initial planning. And, given that I’m supposed to submit my writing direction *and* have a meeting with my writing coach before I actually start writing … ehhh, I’m pushing my target start-writing date to end of next week. September 17. Saturday. (I will be traveling that day, so that could either be great or terrible for that initial oomph.) I don’t know if I had this sensation as a younger writer (college-age and younger) … I don’t remember feeling this way … but I have a creeping underlying fear these days that I’m going to make some irreversibly *incorrect* decision during this planning process that will prove fatal later on. I keep reminding myself: I can’t do this wrong. This whole first draft is the creative equivalent of getting the clay onto the wheel. Draft two and beyond is where the form and artistry happen! Where the lump of clay is transformed into a functional <thing>. So chill out, Jess. You’ve got this. And, actually, I’ve done this many times. I’ve written many a first draft (and actually many I thought had some pretty good potential on reread), so anyway this is something I know how to do. The revision process will be my new frontier! But I’m not fucking around with that this time, either. I’ve hired support.
