REVIEW- THIS IS THE END
A film starring James Franco is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.
In the same vein as Superbad and Pineapple Express comes another comedy starring Hollywood’s stupid, funny-guy clique. However, this one somewhat sets itself apart in that all the actors play themselves.
Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson come together to party at James Franco’s LA mansion, only to be suddenly disturbed by the apocalypse. Here follows a ridiculous tale of bromance, mashed up with witless gore, unnecessary drug references, a plethora of penis jokes and an onslaught of celebrity cameos.
This Is the End may sound like a torturous ego-massaging marathon of stupidity, but it’s balanced with just enough self-deprecating humour to make it okay. Watching Michael Cera portray himself as an arrogant jerk was oddly refreshing, and it’s cool to see a film where the actors are obviously having fun with what they’re doing, especially when you can tell a lot of it is improvised. The brainless plotline does get a little tiring by the end, and the last half hour drags into idiocy, but it’s saved by a spot of synchronised dancing by The Backstreet Boys at the very last moment. At least stay for that.

REVIEW- AFTER EARTH
On paper, After Earth sounded like it couldn’t fail.
Father and son, Cypher and Kitai Raige (Will and Jaden Smith) are the sole survivors of a spaceship that crashed on the long abandoned Earth. With Cypher gravely injured, it’s up to Kitai to navigate the hostile world and overcome his fears to activate the distress beacon in the wreckage of the ship.
Smith squared have already proven they have a fantastic onscreen dynamic, and with After Earth being a mishmash of the science fiction thriller and coming of age genre, I was more than a little excited to see this. Guys- it’s going to be The Pursuit of Happyness! In space!
Yet, somehow, the film fell completely flat on its face. It’s agonisingly slow in pace, with Jaden struggling to drive the plot forward while his father sat out most of the film (his only contribution to sprout bizarrely scientology sounding dialogue in a voice that was devoid of Smith’s normal charisma).
After Earth’s one saving grace is that large parts are completely silent as Kitai explores the visually stunning world and battles CGI monsters that swing between being terrifying realistic (something that you’d expect to see a first year digital media student create).
After Earth could’ve been a contender. But with disappointing writing and directing decisions, it’s merely a good popcorn movie, rather than a great movie.
GRADE: Credit plus
