Herol did not want to scare Luthian away with grand words or gestures, so he found other means of confessing the way he felt.

He said the words often without uttering a sound— spoken frankly in his eyes as he gazed with admiration and desire. The syllables were whispered quietly with each time his fingertips brushed Luthian’s arm as they walked silently beside each other through the trees.

The words were shouted in the lines by his eyes each time he laughed too loudly at Luthian’s jokes, and they were sighed out in the downward curve of his spine as Luthian claimed his willing body when they laid together in the night.

The two of them were like leaves in the wind, and Herol wanted only to flutter and dance this way as long as he could-- as long as Luthian would allow. If Luthian grew tired of him, and fluttered away to perch on a different branch, Herol would let him go, and sing the song of the mourning birds, for a little while. Afterward, he would find another tree to build himself a nest.

But that was what he told himself, and often, the things he told himself were lies.
