On this day, 19 June 1865, during the US civil war, Union general Gordon Granger gave a proclamation in Galveston, Texas, declaring: “The People of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and property rights between former masters and slaves”. The order then clarified that the relationship between formerly enslaved people and their previous owners should become “that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages… they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” As news of the declaration spread across the state, large numbers of enslaved people began to effectively go on strike and desert their plantations, returning to states they came from or heading for cities containing Union troops. Shikarpur Police on Thursday foiled a bid to marry a 10-year-old girl with a 40-year-old man in in Naparkot area of Sindh’s Shikarpur district.

The man, identified as Mohammad Somar, was arrested after nikkah, according to the police, which say that they have also taken the crying minor into custody. The child bride was about to be sent away with the groom at the time of the raid.

Police further added that Mohammad Somar confessed to paying the girl’s father Rs250,000 for the wedding.

The marriage officiator and the minor girl’s father were declared to be absconding, police said, adding that raids are being conducted to arrest the individuals.

Farooq Amjad, the assistant sub-inspector of police (ASP) for Shikarpur, confirmed that they have the girl in their custody and the investigation was underway.
