Named after two songs, both of which are favourites of mine.

Joanna Sternberg (New York City) came to my attention a couple of times over the past couple of days, but it was the Pitchfork "Best New Album" tag for the recently released "I've Got Me" that really caught my attention.

Their music is a joy to listen to. It recalls the songwriting of Randy Newman, or Daniel Johnston. The voice and melodies also remind me a bit of Arthur Russell and Kimya Dawson. Sternberg added that they were influenced by the songs of Elliott Smith.

And finally, there is a storytelling here that reminds me of Woody Guthrie, and Kora Feder to name a few.

This is being released by Fat Possum (Mississippi). Their debut was initially released by Conor Oberst's label, Team Love.

The Parade - She Sleeps Alone (1968)

Flamenco tinged sunshine pop, maybe. The Parade had one of first sunshine pop hits with Sunshine Girl in 1967. The Parade were songwriter/producer Jerry Riopelle and three actors (including Stuart Margolin, who played “Angel” in The Rockford Files)

How to become reconnected with the beautiful

I am stuck with all the horrid sensations of being a body and cannot focus. I cannot find the beautiful.

Did it happen in the night while I slept? Was there an email I didn’t read? Did it carve itself upon the underside of my heart and the letters have eroded to nothing?

I once attempted to put all the people I knew into an address book. If only I could find it. Then I could remember if I knew it.

Monorail Music (Glasgow, Scotland) has been talking up this release for several days now. Upon listening to "White Awakening" I can definitely hear an even looser Pastels sound here. But then "Vertigo My Other Conviction" kicks in with 11 minutes of mayhem.

Les Rallizes Dénudés was formed in the early 1970s in Tokyo and The OZ Tapes represent a long lost chapter in their existence. This music has been stored for the past 1/2 century and is now seeing the light of the day.

Frankly, these two songs are pretty different. As I said earlier, this moves from The Pastels/Velvet Underground, to intense psych-rock (Think if High Rise had a little more psych rock in them).

This is being issued on Temporal Drift (Los Angeles) which looks to be a new label specializing in lost Japanese rock gems.

Authenticity is primarily a feeling. An instinctual resonance, perhaps even narcissistic. This person seems real, this art has authentic emotions; I recognise this. It is possible that this exists because I do not need to stretch my ideas of what is possible.

The deliberately inauthentic is so truly wonderfully strange. The complete disturbance of the certain. But then that is very last century isn’t it.

Yusef Lateef - Hikima: Creativity - reissue of rare 1983 LP from Nigeria

In the early 1980s, famed jazz saxophonist and musical luminary Yusef Lateef traveled to Nigeria as a Senior Research Fellow to study, write, and teach at the Centre For Nigerian Cultural Studies at Ahmadu Bello University. He cut this record with students and local musicians while there; it only got a small local press, and remained virtually unknown by jazz fans and collectors for over 30 years. On Hikima, Lateef leads a nonet of African musicians in seven compositions that fuse his deep blues and jazz roots with native Nigerian instruments, drums and chants. The sounds stretch from meditative and melancholic to urgent and unrelenting. A singular recording impossible to classify or box in. “Lateef’s Hikima is immediately wayward, frenetic, radical, the kind of highlife you want to march to.” - Yinka Elujoba
