I actually don't mind POC Luis hcs at all. I just hope that fans extend the same protecting to actual poc who face racism in fan spaces. There are a lot of people who hate characters like Ada, who is canonically a woc and some of them are Luis fans. And I think that if you are going to hc Luis as a poc, then it is very important that you are speaking about racism actual characters of color face.

I'm a little bit confused OP. "Actual characters of color face" Do you think people who "hc" Luis as POC for funsies? Spain has many ethnicities, just because it's part of Europe, doesn't mean all Spaniards are white. You're basically white-washing other poc that exist within Spain no?

I'm not sure what corner of the community you are im, but I've seen a lot of people protecting Ada, and just as Ada gets a lot of hate and racism, Luis and Carlos receive the same.

If these Luis fans are being racist against Ada, they need to be called out directly of course, but that does not take away from Luis being poc? Like why are we gatekeep poc, coming from an actual poc myself.

I'm also POC and also hc Luis as POC. I'm mostly talking about things I and other poc, especially spanish poc (like Romani, MENA and Muslim poc in spain) have just been noticing about fandom racism discussions, especially with regards to how characters of color in RE are treated. when it comes to conversations of fandom racism, luis mostly dominates those conversation rather than characters like carlos or ada, and it makes it difficult. esp in twitter spaces, where ada faces a lot of racialized misogyny. and luis tends to get more visibility than ada and carlos as well.

I don't think people hc him as poc for funsies, because even I hc as poc and it's not for funsies. but luis is from from an extremely xenophobic and racist town in spain, that is extremely, religious hostile to outsiders. they've let no one in or out for many many years, while i hc him as poc, to me it canonically screams white. esp since i've been subjected to racism from people like that in spain.

I've been to spain and have spoken to people who look like luis, and who are darker than luis, and called me anti-black slurs. i've been cursed out in italy and spain for being dark skinned. a muslim woman and i were called slurs in spain by people who were the same shade as luis. i got kicked out of an air bnb in spain by people who look like luis. i've seen people who look like luis call romani people in spain slurs.

sure, luis might be poc but i just don't see him as such canonically. and i'd rather spend my time protecting actual, confirmed characters of color from racism and erasure in fandom racism discussions.

also there are tons of discussions about in on twitter and these people actually explain it quite well. i linked it for you.

and i mean, there are ACTUAL people of color leading these conversations, not just white people. in fact, it's not white people at all. Here is another post as well.

Somehow, I need Beast Kyle Crane to bump into zombified Rahim who actually *didn't* die , and was able to somehow cure himself or at least, live with the virus/infection. So he is somewhat of a sentient zombie that never made it past the viral stage. I need them to work together and get together.

Luis struggling with his sexuality and coming to finally accept himself when he leaves Spain is important to me. Luis also struggling with forms of toxic masculinity, but learning to shed that as he accepts himself. Being in a small Catholic European town like Valdelobos, he didn't have the support system or the experiences to fully accept himself or understand what was happening. He saw subtle forms of homophobia and transphobia. One of my hcs is he started to truly question his own identity when one of his friends, who was a trans girl, left Valdelobos in her youth and came back years later to visit Luis. At that time, she was fully transitioned when Luis saw her and seeing that, really opened his mind to the possibility of different genders, sexualities, etc. She told him about so many things; she was also one of the only ones who knew that Luis himself was a gay man.

Anyway, when he leaves he stays with his friend for some time, and then he branches out as well and finds himself. He becomes comfortable in his sexuality, he also sheds forms of masculinity that he felt forced to participate in due to his culture/community.

Some random rahim hcs just because

he is smart, like, not just smart enough to build bombs and stuff but he was a genius. a prodigy. mechanics, physics, etc., were easy to him. he excelled in all his classes. he got honors in highschool, and excelled with a degree in engineering in college. However, he eventually wanted to focus on photography; that was his passion. He had applied to get a masters in engineering in the united states and got accepted. Before he went, he was going to go on a photography trip, and the grand canyon was the first place he wanted to go. Obviously, that didn't happen.

Rahim is also gay. This isn't a secret in his family, his whole family knows (or knew), and they were supportive of him. He didn't have a boyfriend growing up, mainly because he was focused on school. Also like, Jade was a little protective.

Some more family makeup. Jade and Rahim's father was Turkish - Syrian and there mother was Afro-Moroccan/Sudanese, but they look like their father who is tan skinned. They are a Muslim - Christian family with their father being Syrian Christian and their mother being Muslim.

Rahim also wore glasses but decided to ditch them just because.

actually, the concept of rahim being an odd one out of the bunch and being able to remain a viral whilst also retaining his full human conscience is something i want to explore/write?

maybe crane snapping his neck jerked something in him, something that was able to help him balance between human and viral - to the point where he never becomes a full Infected but the likely hood of him becoming human is slim.

There are many ways this can go, and I'm happy to kinda, write and draw this out.

like, what if crane thinks that he's dead (clearly) and months later, he spots a viral who looks just like rahim, saving people.

I love Dying Light for a lot of reasons, but I really love it for it's portrayal of the Middle East, Arab and Muslim people (whether they be Black or Brown).

A lot of survival games have extremely anti-arab , islamaphobic and anti -black sentiment. Especially when fighting and guns are involved.

Dying Light for the most part is the opposite. The characters who are of arab, black and or muslim descent are very humanized. They each have stories, they are not made into brutes that are just killed off, etc. We have strong women, obviously Jade, but very often arab men are portrayed in negative lights as well, but we don't see that. Obviously there is Rahmin, but we also have the Imran Zere, we have other supporting/main characters.

And I was also taken aback, in a positive way, when I was going into the town and there was a picture on one of the houses with a hijabi with the words, 'Vote' next to her, as if she was a symbol of empowerment - but her hijab wasn't seen as a negative thing, or something suppressing her.

The school scene, was also touching because you can see that the devs acually came up with stories for students. We see pictures, things left behind, etc.

And more than anything, this game is so critical of the GRE which is supposed to represent US American corruption, but also, other white supremacist corrupt nations.

It's not perfect at all, but it is nice to see arab people, muslim people, and black people humanized instead of seen as aggressors in survival videos games.
