Why gypsy is considered a slur
Thereâs an (in)famous post that is going around explaining why the word âgypsyâ is a slur. It has a lot of profanity in it, and some people donât like that. So, with that in mind, this is a post that explains WHY itâs a slur, but less profanity (Iâm NOT knocking cursing by any means, but some people would like to pass it around without as much profanity in it).
Also ,please note, I DO have Romani/Rroma in my blood, so these are actually my ancestors weâre talking about.
Alright, so way-back-when,there was a group of people (aka âgypsiesâ, I will use the word traveler) who migrated from India (and geographically close) to Eastern Europe. This group was the Roma/Romani people.
Some Europeans who came in contact with them, thought they were from Egypt, hence the term âGypsyâ (Egypt). This was also around the time when the camera first became âmobileâ (aka it could much more easily be carried from location to location). The people who were featured in âforeign photographsâ were people of different cultures, across all cultures (India, Japan, China, Indonesia, etc.) in South Asia and East Asia who were often forced into very uncomfortable and/or offensive photographs, for the sake of being photographed for what the PHOTOGRAPHERS (NOT the natives) viewed as âbeautifulâ or âsexyâ.
The Roma/Romani people were NOT nomadic (traveled from place to place) by choice. Due to government persecution (effectively making it illegal to hire Roma/Romani), they were forced to travel light and only âsettleâ for a small amount of time, before the local time villagers forced them out.
Sadly, this is STILL going on in Europe. Hereâs some examples of whatâs going on (espicially eastern Europe):
âForced sterilization (yes, it is still happening)
Harassment (by law enforcement as well as civilians)
Fingerprinting (this is happening in Italy right now â all Romani people are being fingerprinted, simply because our race is considered âcriminalâ)
Exclusion from public schools and welfare programs
Bombings (it is not uncommon in places like the Czech Republic for people to throw molotov cocktails into the windows of Romani homes)â
Thereâs been a recent string (2017) of many Roma camps being attacked and Roma people murdered in Ukraine with NO justice being served
The âgypsy costumesâ you might see in Halloween stores are made from the gross (as in large) romanticization from the photographers who traveled the lands and forced the people into uncomfortable positions and clothing.Â
Some Roma/Romani people have attempted to âreclaimâ the word âgypsyâ, but many in the community still are very hurt by the phrase. It is a harsh ethnic slur by most people in the community (itâs on-par with the ân wordâ from the POC community). Different Roma tribes havent been exposed to the negativity of the use of the word gypsy, BUT THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT OK TO USE THE WORD.
There are a few documentaries (as well as clips from documentaries) floating around YouTube that shows the hardships contemporary Roma/Romani individuals go through (itâs hard to watch, warning).
Saying youâve been âgyppedâ is also hurtful, because it comes from the term âgypsyâ, which as explained above, NOT ok. The Roma/Romani people were FORCED to be scam artists/thieves/ârip offsâ/etc. BECAUSE of government persecution.Razzle dazzle the average Jane/Joe with some âmysticâ bullshit (fortune telling, palm reading, crystal balls, etc.), tell them what they want to hear, and itâs a quick buck because the government will NOT let you work anywhere. It is NOT the âdream lifeâ.
Honestly, the Neopagan and some witchcraft communities need to quit the âGypsy Witchâ bullshit, because itâs equivalent tosaying âNxxxxr witchâ, which is NOT ok in ANY sense.
The reason why so many Americans are ignorant to this, is because we donât have a large population of Roma/Romani here, nor does America share the same history as Europe does with the Roma/Romani.Â
If you do NOT have Roma/Romani in your background, it really isnât up to you to decide whether or not a word is âokâ for you to use. It would be like an Asian attempting to use phrase âwetbackâ (common slur for Mexico and geographically near it) for themselves.
