My honest opinion about the new movie? I didn't like the plot at all

Frankenstein (2025) Rant

So I've been pretty hyped about this one, especially since the trailer had sold me the movie as "pretty book accurate" However, today I peeked through the Wikipedia page to see the cast… and oh boy Not a very good first impression in my opinion

I was already a bit unhappy with not casting a young actor for the role of Victor (I have nothing against Issac, I just think a relatively middle-aged man "might" not have the impact that college student Victor has in the book) Except now this looks like the least important issue????

1) Elizabeth is now WILLIAM'S FIANCÉE whom Victor has feelings for (I'm baffled, that's all I can say) 2) Alphonse is now Leopold, who is an oppressive father, because apparently Victor can't be a terrible father to the Creature without him having daddy issues in the first place 3) Caroline is now Claire, who died in childbirth…?? I have no idea where they're going with this one. I think Caroline making sure Victor and Elizabeth stay together in her deathbed is very important to their relationship, but whatever I guess 4) I have not seen a mention of either Henry or Ernest, which is a shame :(

I'm so sorry but I legit hate the name Jack for Griffin 😭 To be fair, I thought maybe we could separate H. G. Well's name for two of his characters, Herbert would be Moreau and George would be Griffin, but I also don't like making names for characters that already exist (this is a very me problem) so for now Griffin is G. G. Griffin This is how I imagine his certificate btw (I can't remember which major he finished so I had to add all) and Thank you so much!!!! I know The Invisible Man has a small fandom so it's nice to know people actually see and like my art

My main AU is sort of a mess right now, but here's a short thing I had in mind for Griffin:

Before his experiment, he already had a beard (I really wanted that mean professor look on him) and it keeps growing while he's invisible I imagine he's had a couple of failed attempts in order to shave it off, but he couldn't quite get it right However, when he becomes visible again (with the help of Frankenstein and Jekyll) he gets rid of the beard completely, and this happens through a personal arc where he kind of sorrrrrrt of learns to be less of terrible person (dw his spice is going nowhere!!!!!)

Some sketches and some thoughts on the relationship between Griffin and Frankenstein

I have read a couple of goodreads reviews saying Griffin doesn't offer enough emotions through his words or struggles and hardships of becoming visible again and that lack of sympathy for the character leaves the reader with a one-dimensional low-tempered man who goes on a reign of terror. I remember myself not being able to connect to him as much as I would have loved to. I kept asking myself why doesn't he have a section dedicated to showing grief towards what's become of him and his experiment like Jekyll and Frankenstein do? But then I thought: perhaps this is his significant feature? Contrasted with Victor Frankenstein who spends a vast portion of his account explaining what he was thinking and why he was feeling terrible all the time, Griffin doesn't state ANYTHING about sorrow. There is distress in his condition and how he's been doing and hating on people as much as possible, but he acts as if he is free of emotions that would make him illogical. He has stated that he is a man of mathematics and physics and all those stem subjects that downgrade sentiments further more. He is frustrated, yet he is hopeful that with the help of Kemp (which he believes he's acquired) he can achieve better days. Why isn't Victor like this? He has accepted his sorrow, he weeps openly, but has almost no hope towards finding things better than how they are now. I REALLY love this contrast! A great example of this is how each of them deals with the death of the father. Griffin shows no affection, not a single thought that'd indicate he's sorry for what happened, saying his father essentially acted on his own emotions. Whilst the death of Alphonse breaks what was left of Victor. You could argue that several tragedies had happened up to that point in the story, but Ernest was still alive. Griffin presumably lost his last family member (based on the fact that he had to arrange the burial) and it was all his fault too! Of course Alphonse's death was also Victor's fault (not AS direct, but still) and of course he completely lashes out afterwards, but they do have very different ways of coping with what THEY caused. I genuinely wish I could see them exchange ideas. They are mad scientists and all the scientific aspects are cool and everything, but what's more thrilling to me is to see Griffin finally burst into tears in front of Frankenstein, as he stares at how human this machine-like albino with several degrees is. And to see Frankenstein being the most pathetic possible as Griffin yells: "You can't give up now! Not after everything we've been through, you miserable Swiss git!"

I revisited @midorilied / @gabrielied The Search For Henry Jekyll series and it made me remember these parody sketches I drew from some of my favorite panels back in 2023 when I first binge-read it
