OH MY GOD
tumblr not showing people’s follower count is so crazy cause sometimes i’ll think someone is a big/small blog and then someone asks how many followers they have and they say something completely different than i assumed like wow that’s not the vibes i got from you
New ask game, guess how many followers I have based on your vague impression of me

been thinking about…….. them
something that people really dont understand about ADHD is that we dont “jump from one idea to the next”
we have very fast, very associative minds that connect ideas. we have a train of thought, it just goes WAY faster than yours!
example: im thinking about dogs. that makes me think of pitbulls, which makes me think of an animal planet show i enjoy. the show connects to tv in general, which makes me think of my favorite cartoon. i associate my favorite cartoon with art and animation, and i wind up thinking about shading techniques.
TL;DR: having ADHD is kinda like playing a lifelong game of 7 Degrees of Kevin Bacon
…WHAT THE FUCK
I am plagued by this but also that associative learning makes it really easy to be a hyper-generalist in terms of skills and knowledge.
This is how my brain works….
The downside is, very few people can keep pace with these jumps, and I’ve actually been told my “mind leaps” are annoying.
Yeah.
Let that sink in.
Being told that the way my mind makes connections between Point A and Point D while seemingly bypassing B and C is “annoying”.
… this.
It drives my husband absolutely NUTS- we’ll be having a conversation and in a lull between sentences I’ll have jumped ahead six topics, pop back in with a “Yeah, and-“
Meanwhile, he’s looking at me like I’ve grown another head. To him, whatever I’ve just said is a total non sequitur, but I can track EXACTLY how I got there… it just doesn’t make any sort of sense to anyone but me.
It’s kind of like, you know those word cloud things that pop up occasionally, usually to track how often different words come up in a certain place, or which tags get used more often?
It’s kind of like that. Instead of one word (or subject) being highlighted, it’s a whole cluster of related concepts that get lit up—and “related” means “the person having the thought has a reason to connect these,” rather than actual objective relationships, though those are present too. And then your brain leaps sideways along three or four connections, and you arrive at a thought destination that makes perfect sense to you but none at all to your listeners.
Maybe you connect a certain breed of dog to a certain name because your crush back in high school had a dog of that breed, and you, say, hear someone talking about identity theft, and your brain connects “identity” to the movie “The Bourne Identity” and its main character Jason Bourne, and you remember that your high school crush Jason had a Siberian husky, and there’s a moment where you bilocate into a mental impression of Siberia but it’s overpowered by the remembrance that boys’ clothes sizes for thicker kids were called “husky” and it triggers a memory of your mom taking you and your brother shopping for school clothes at Sears, and then you’re simultaneously spiraling off into Thoughts about the aesthetic of urban decay and the death of various retail stores you knew in your youth, but also mildly pissed at remembering how the boys’ department had a video game console but the girls’ section didn’t, but mostly ooh, yeah, Donkey Kong, your parents didn’t buy you video games so that was the only place you got to play them except for that one time you finally found your first grade class video game console unoccupied by the people who always seemed to get there first and you were so happy to get to actually play it that you didn’t realize it was open because everybody was getting their coats and boots and snow pants on to go home and you just happily played there until the teacher came back from herding the class out to the buses and found you and drove you home because she knows your mother from church.
And then you’re like, “remember Nintendo?” to the person who’s just said something to you about identity theft and they’re confused at both how you jumped to Nintendo and why you’re asking like it’s some long-lost relic instead of the makers of the WII they played the other night because they also don’t know you mean not Nintendo the company but Nintendo the concept of old, retro, 2D games played on a humming, crackling cathode-ray-tube TV, haloed by a fond nostalgia for K-Mart, old non-chain hardware stores with creaking claustrophobic aisles filled with every conceivable nut and bolt imaginable, and the way Sears used to have a really fancy sitting room with pretty sofas in it in between the store and the ladies’ toilets.
Basically imagine a sentence written not in single words but in words surrounded with somewhat random word clouds, each word in them prone to spawning their own word clouds, and looking to any random onlookers like that demonic text effect thing because they can’t read any of the cloud.
