Mama balloon dogs and the balloonlings
i really im absolutely astounded at the phenomenal job that MIB did not to be racist against aliens, despite being a movie about secret agents chasing evil aliens. that scene where jay helps an alien mother to give birth is probably one of the most humanizing moments for an Other ive seen in a movie ever.
like it grabs the body snatcher trope from the cold war "aliens are all around you, hidden in diguzise, they could be any one of us!" and then it says "and theyre just people, theyre literally just people trying to live their lives and thats fine"
you literally have a whooe scene where a cop stands out because he says "i dont care how menacibg or threatning someone looks im not going to shoot them if there is a reasonable explination for what theyre doing, one is sneezing and one is just doing excercise", and that is the guy that gets aproved to join MIB.
The movie has a real love for NYC and immigrant culture as a part of that. The opening scene where K welcomes the undocumented immigrants to the United States. One alien greets another and says he's ordered him pierogi. A lot of them are refugees from their home worlds who just want to survive.
on tv people are always getting called by professional titles instead of names eg captain doctor detective what have you. wish this happened more in real life in general for your average person. I would like to simply be addressed by the element of my life that is relevant to the current situation, I mostly do not want people to know or use my name. hello patient, the doctor will see you now. dear applicant we are sorry to say that we think your resume is terrible and we hope you crumble into unseeing dust forever, goodbye. you there, shopper, please stop hiding under the clothing racks and leaping out to bite people. and so forth
Forreal tho being addressed as "Madam Advocate" by judges hits this feeling for me so much that I don't even mind the misgendering. After all, it's not me, it's the Advocate being addressed, and the Advocate has a Job To Do (which is supporting the survivor who doesn't want to be there at all but is being coerced by the system).
āIt's not fair.ā The little ghost kicks impotently at the chalk lines around her feet. āI ain't done nothing.ā
I nod, setting down my chalk and spellbook. āIt does sound like there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding.ā
āShe took against me, that's what happened,ā the dead girl says with a scowl. She looks about fourteen, round faced and spotty, with whisps of brown hair peaking out from under her mob-cap. Her face and her crossed arms have a tell-tale bluish tinge to them. A cholera death.
āI been here for don't know how long and never gave any trouble. Nobody ever complained about me 'till her.ā
ā¦well, that's not strictly true.
Number 12, Barclay Street has been attracting rumours of haunting since the mid nineteenth century.
Sounds of faint singing and crying in the corridors at night. Cold spots. Doors that open and close by themselves. Animals acting strangely. Harmless, mid to low-level stuff, typical for a bored teenage poltergeist.
Still, pointing that out isn't likely to achieve much, and certainly the most recent complaints of blood running down the walls, screams in the dark and paralysing night terrors seem distinctly out of character.
The ghost toes the chalk again, more tentatively this time. It stays resolutely unbroken.
She could get out if she wanted to. I'm not one of those assholes who brings out their full arsenal of wards and sigils for a first meeting with a level 2 spectre. The summoning circle will keep her in one place for as long as I need her to talk, but it wouldn't hold for a moment if she really fought against it.
I take it as a good sign that she's still here. Pouting or not, she's clearly willing to work with me.
āNone of the others could do this,ā she says. āNone of 'em even saw me.ā She looks up. āAre you here to exise me?ā
āExorcise,ā I say instinctively, and curse myself when she flinches. āSorry, no, no! I don't exorcise people from their homes without good reason, not if they're happy where they are.ā
āI was happy. Till she started calling in all them ghost hunters.ā
Mrs Delaney had been quite persistent in her attempts to 'fix' her haunted house. Most of the people she found were charlatans, of course, but I'd still arranged an appointment as fast as I could once word reached me. It wouldn't have been long before she happened upon somebody with Talent, and unfortunately not everybody in this field knows how to behave like a professional.
āI think we might be able to help each other,ā I say, careful to keep my voice calm and level.
āDon't see how. Not unless you can exorcise Her.ā
āNot quite what I had in mind.ā I pull out my phone and scroll through my photos. āYou say that you're not the cause of the most recent incidents of paranormal activity?ā
A pause. The ghost gnaws on her lip. I wait, patiently, keeping my body language open and nonthreatening. āI⦠I knocked her coffee cup over,ā she admits at last. āShe was being mean and talking on her telephone, saying I done all these things when I never did! So I decided to show her what I could do if I wanted.ā
āHmm.ā The ghost eyes me nervously, as if expecting me to pull out a book, bell and candle and banish her on the spot.
āI only tipped it,ā she adds. āI didn't break it or nothing!ā
āYou shouldn't have touched it at all,ā I say sternly. āBut⦠I can appreciate that you were frustrated, so let's say no more about it.ā
The ghost looks relieved.
āMy point is,ā I continue, āif you weren't the one making blood rain from the ceiling or tormenting people in their sleep, then what was? There's no other ghosts on the property.ā I find the picture I was looking for. āYou can get anywhere around the house, right? Including behind the furniture and in the backs of cupboards?ā
āYes'm.ā
I hold the phone up so that she can see the picture on the screen. āI'm going to let you go free in a moment, and I need you to see if you can find anything that looks like this.ā
The ghost wrinkles her forehead. āWhat's that when it's at home?ā
āBlack mould,ā I say, reaching out a foot to break the binding circle. āAnd I'm pretty sure it's the cause of this haunting.ā
I broke a ramune bottle to get the marble out for my dragon.
The dragons face never changes, but I still feel like he looks happier in the 2nd pic š„ŗ

So I just simultaneously did, and possibly didn't lose my job today :)
Very much did in the sense that I literally do not know where my job is at the moment. But, for the time being I haven't been let go because nobody else including the store owner knows where it is either.
So, I don't wanna risk doxxing myself by posting pictures but goddamn am I tempted because this is not a believable event. This is a cartoon problem. For looneytoons.
But yeah, so, I work(ed?) at a kiosk selling boba tea, right? Freestanding kiosk in the mall with full water and electrical hookups and multiple fridges and sinks and a mini kitchen and the works. Fully functional tea shop. Very important to note that it was there last night, The work chat was discussing another issue last night at closing time. I'll get back to this.
It's been showing signs of being on the way out with how business is being handled lately and I've been considering other options, which is probably why I'm not as torn up about this as I should be, but maybe it just hasn't set in yet, but that's not the point. The point is there's been a lot of shit breaking and not being replaced and nobody mentioning anything about it until I walk into work in the morning and have to figure out why shit like the fucking cash register isn't there today. So I'm kinda used to having to ask questions about big things that nobody bothered to update me on. I was out for two weeks recovering from a surgery, so I came to work this morning assuming there'd be some kind of bullshit, yeah?
So, the question I had to ask the chat this morning was:
Not a text I ever thought I'd have to send in sincerity, but there it is. Because what I found instead was a fenced off patch of discolored tiles and a few holes in the floor where my entire place of employment used to be.
And the answer? Nobody knows! It was there last night when the mall closed, and every single trace of the structure and all its contents including drink making supplies and our safe and cashbox was gone when it opened again. And when I say nobody knows, I mean everyone from last night's closers to the actual (former?) owner of the store jad no fucking clue about this until getting that text from me this morning. For once I am actually the first to know. š.
So. I guess I didn't so much lose my job as had it stolen. Not by AI, but good old fashioned hands-on human beings picking it up and carrying it away somehow. All mall security would tell me was that they were instructed not to tell me anything and have us contact our management. Who also don't know anything. And later on I came across some construction workers around the gravesite of the kiosk discussing filling in the holes, asked them about it, and was told that they "weren't at liberty to say".
So, not only is my job gone in the most literal physical sense of the word, but it was taken in some kind of super secret kiosk extraction in the dead of night without any warning or witnesses and nobody is allowed to speak of it. The store owner said she was gonna figure it out 10 hours ago and still no word back.
I don't know what else to say aside from I've been laughing all day and I'm gonna have a hell of a time explaining Schrodinger's Unemployment to the benefits office.
Update that is not an update because I'm basically certain this isn't what actually happened:
My mother in law thinks the FBI took it.
Not any of the other stores around the state. Just the one little kiosk.
Why? Because she loves a conspiracy and is just a little bit extra.
Also because she was around for the massive crackdown on Yakuza-owned businesses in Waikiki (in her homestate) that did actually involve the FBI seizing stores (no confirmation of making kiosks cleanly disappear in the middle of the night though).
Still no word from my job on what's actually going on, but the most likely theory so far is that maybe the kiosk was on lease and got repossessed? The mystery continues
(also shout out to the person who proposed Carmen Sandiego)
ACTUAL (partial) UPDATE:
According to the owner, based on what she's been able to find out, the kiosk was not removed legally and they're starting a potentially long process of legal action. I hope she gets to sue the shit out of whoever did it but for now at least I know for sure I'm unemployed.
Really hoping for more details in terms of who/why/how, so I'll keep updating if I learn anything.
For now the summary is: An unnamed entity that is most likely mall management (on account of mall security cooperating with them) stole an entire kiosk and all the contents including money and machinery with barely a trace in the middle of the night grinch-style, with zero warning or explanation, and ensured the silence of both security and the construction crew, in an action that was definitely preplanned and illegal, and as far as I know nobody knows its whereabouts.
So now I'm officially out of a job. Because my workplace was literally stolen in the night.
Actually fuck it let's share some photos cause I wouldn't be inclined to believe this myself. It's not like anyone can stalk me at my job now and I'm not gonna have to see any coworkers that might find my tumblr.
Enjoy the unintentionally funniest text I've ever sent in my life

Oh my goodness you're my hero this is so beautiful
Holy fuck my job got fan art
xena gave us trans drag lesbianism as a treat
There are layers to this. Earlier in the episode, Xena discovers her secret while they're sharing a locker room. A woman she has got naked with turned out to be trans. It's the exact scenario terfs are always fear-mongering about, but Xena just shrugs it off.
Also, the kiss was a big deal not just because it was gay but because the trans actress was HIV positive. They wanted to show the world that you can't contract HIV just from kissing someone. Bear in mind, the AIDS crisis was still fresh on people's minds in the 90s.
Happy Pride.
I think when a sub says "you can do whatever you want to me" what they're actually wanting is to not make decisions anymore, and they think by saying this they can foist the decision making off on the dom without having to do any of the work beforehand. But unfortunately to get to the Not Making Choices part of kink you do in fact have to make a Lot Of Choices beforehand and communicate those choices to your partner. This is an essential part of the process and skipping it is both unsafe and unfair for whoever you're playing with.
Not Making Choices is the reward for communicating clearly, not the default
To people who say this, as someone who has been there, reasons you might find yourself wanting to say "you can do whatever you want to me":
It feels flirty (situationally dependent. This is not the use OP is talking about but make sure you've *already negotiated* before, don't say it in response to genuine questions. If anything else on this list feels true to you, don't let being flirty be an excuse to say it anyway/not communicate/not address those other factors.)
Wanting to please/prioritize your partner (not a bad desire, but they likely want a clear understanding of your own wants and limits so that they can not only do what they want to do but have the Impact they want.)
Fear of seeming too needy, demanding, not submissive enough (maybe ask for them to share some of their desires and limits first so it doesn't feel like you're leading the conversation right out the gate, and understand that you having to trust that if you ask for something they don't care for they'll say no is the same trust they have to have in you.) (note- some Doms DO complain about subs being demanding, or asking for things right out the gate, treating them as kink dispensers. Subs Can be shitty like that and it's fair to complain, but also Doms can do this unreasonably, and in either case people overhearing these complaints can absorb that "don't be demanding, treat your Dom as a person" incorrectly as "don't ask for things")
Not knowing what you want (generally you can just state this outright, I recommend including a request for suggestions or brainstorming, or a discussion of a kink tasting, "Can we try a couple things and see what clicks?" If they're not up to work with you on figuring it out then you will have to just figure out what you want by yourself or with someone else.)
Decision fatigue/desire to set aside making choices (you can in fact also say this bluntly. Being offered a simple two options to pick between works for some people, so you can suggest that as a starting point. You may also need to get some down time to start with, prior to subbing. Subspace is not a replacement for self care and the human need for relaxation. It can help with decision fatigue to have time in subspace, so before doing more in depth scenes needing signifact negotiating you can do smaller ones to help that, but you do need to make Some decisions and do communication upfront for that even if you find ways to safely minimize the decisions to start with. You could ask for suggestions and make the only decisions be indicating your interest/lack, fill out kink interest worksheets so it's on paper instead of a conversation and can be broken up into more manageable chunks, or do a tasting type scene where all you say is yes and no. Seriously try to give yourself downtime and meet your needs without Just putting them on another person though.)
Shame about expressing desires (let yourself be embarrassed. Turn red, stammer, say "I need a minute", push yourself to voice at least one thing. You don't need to be suave in a negotiation, and most Doms will find it cute/hot. And probably do some reflecting on where that shame comes from, how it does and doesn't align with your values, and unpack that some with a professional or at least a trusted friend.)
Fear of setting boundaries/voicing limits (this is a serious one. If you can't do this in the negotiation do you think you can safeword in the moment? You simply Have to find a way to set those boundaries to be able to play. That's not to say you can't Work on this while in a kink relationship, but you need to start working on it Now, and make sure that your Dom understands that that's where you're at and is okay with being in those troubled waters with you. Do Not Be Shitty if they are not up for it. Let them leave without guilting them.)
Lack of concern about your own wellbeing (first of all goddamn do I get it. Depression is hard, ideation warps perception of everything, trauma can destroy your sense of self preservation, I used to think trusting someone meant not minding if they did hurt you rather than having faith that they won't. If you can't find it in you to care about not being hurt for your own sake, care about it for theirs. They almost certainly don't want to trigger you, hurt you in a way you dislike, abuse you, or kill you. If they do want to do those things then you saying what you don't want won't stop them, so in that case it doesn't matter. But they probably don't, that's why they're negotiating with you. Your lack of concern doesn't outweigh their concern for your wellbeing, so let them know the relevant info.)
Thinking about what fits here can get you to a place to address issues, accomodate your needs, and communicate effectively.

I still think about one random person I was messaging who got really defensive because I said I didn't think it was hugely likely that David Cronenberg was queer. Not out of the question because he's fairly private, more that he's over 80 and has been making feature films for 50 years, which is kind of like spending 50 years with the biggest concentration of nosy gossipers on the planet. I think there'd have been at least the hint of a whisper of a rumor or something. Like anything is possible but it mostly doesn't seem like his own life concerns his films, a few exceptions to the side. He's a person who makes very strange films who in all other ways expresses himself as otherwise conventional. It's a rare case but I would almost say Cronenberg being trans or queer would be less interesting, because that would almost immediately consume the interpretation of his work. A straight, cis man digging so deep into themes that are easily relatable to the queer and trans experiences in ways that feel unfettered by social niceties, being personally disdainful of social and political proscriptions against sexuality and the body is to me fascinating because if he gets it, and hasn't got anything personal invested as far as sexuality and gender go, that means it's like. Anyone can get it.
Cronenberg is like the metric I hold everyone else to. The guy who seems to have struggled zero amount to accept fundamental human equity and the flexibility to allow for widely ranging lives experiences. He's just some fucking guy, and if someone is blowing a gasket over trans lives, I look at Cronenberg who's position was just quiet positivity and I know. I know the person flipping out is the fucked one, the deviation. Being fine and undisturbed by people who are different from yourself is the baseline. Screaming and rage over differences is a thing people choose, or let happen. I love his films, I hope he never turns out to be anything but bland as fuck.
Also, I'm not sure anyone just asked him directly, because I think he'd answer. He answers every question in interviews pretty plainly, you could just be like hey are you queer or what and he'd say something like I don't feel like my sexuality is particularly connected to my partner's body.
The most Cronenberg story ever is that the first time someone told him that he should adapt Crash, he went and started reading the book, but he had to stop because it frightened him too much.
Cronenberg making a movie about porn:
Cronenberg reading about cars:
personally I am of the opinion that vegans who are like āthe way our food system currently works under capitalism on a large scale is exceptionally cruel to all animals including humans and is not sustainable, so Iām doing what I can to make the most ethical choices available to me about what I eat and encourage others to do the sameā are generally very reasonable people who I agree with in spades. but vegans who seem to think human beings are not themselves animals who are ultimately also part of the food chain but instead some kind of other paternalistic higher entity that can never engage in ethical and sustainable hunting practices (and especially the fringe Iāve seen who think other carnivorous animal predators are also evil and need to be eliminated) are people I regard as foolish at best if not actively anti-indigenous and racist
iām always thinking about that news story where a three year old boy who wandered away from his house and ended up in the middle of the woods was found by this local great pyrenees farm dog who herded the kid back to his unrelated owners house. and the guy was like. whose kid is this
that dog must have been like. hmm. this isnāt a goat. some human must have left their puppy behind by accident. i have to bring this to management. surely my owner will be able to sort out whatever has occurred. that kid was like iām all alone and scared and omg a big fluffy puppy is here to help. and that fucking farmer looking at his dog like. whoās toddler did you steal???
I think it is very important that everyone see the good boy in question. His name is Buford.
