Every so often if I’m feeling down I remind myself that Erid and Vulcan canonically orbit the same star, 40 Eridani A, ergo during the events of phm they shared a single Petrova line.

So that means Rocky and Grace are the historical figures who saved Vulcan from extinction.

Since Mary’s ship logs were dispersed and studied, I like to imagine that Vulcans think of Rocky and Grace with a sort of reverence. Maybe they have statues of them in the Katric Ark. In the Kelvin timeline, after the events of Nero, the old symbols and statues are resurrected on New Vulcan, this time with some new additions.

And that is how the city center of New Shikahr ends up having four prominent statues; an Eridian and a Terran who saved Vulcan’s planet, and a Vulcan and his Terran Captain who could not save the planet but managed to preserve Vulcan culture along with the Elders and save as many lives as they could which allowed the Vulcan race to avoid extinction once again.

Bonus HC: Jim and Spock argue for years over whether Grace was more prominently a ship captain or a science officer, both wanting to claim him as one of their own. Scotty always happily reminds them that the real hero was the engineer who saved him.

No, but this is actually (sort of) canon.

See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.

Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:

Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place. Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.

The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.

The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.

If you look at it in a particular way, the Pirates specifically function by FAIRY RULES: obscure codes of law and formality that they are irrevocably bound to abide by...except when you get the wording wrong.

When we go to Tortuga (or any pirate controlled space) we leave behind the sensibilities of the real world and enter this bizarre perpetual revel of debauchery and violence that could never sustain itself in a world bound by sense.

That makes Jack our Puck character, a trickster of tricksters who can invert your fortunes just by letting him talk to you.

It also makes Will into a changeling, born of the fairyworld, adopted by mortals, and fated to return to it in what makes for a doomed love story. Hell, one might say that the reason Will's swords are SO GOOD is because they contain an element of myth about them: they're the IDEA of swords, true to how they would be in myth.

imo you get the most out of engaging with media when you strike a balance between treating characters as people (reading interiority into their actions, considering the effect of various aspects of their identity, etc etc) and as vehicles for storytelling (what narrative purpose do they serve, how do their actions and personality function to convey the themes of the work, etc etc). because of course characters are literary devices but also there’s a reason we use literary devices written to embody realistic people in order to tell stories

I've got a whole post about this, but basically, the "little to no sexual attraction" definition of asexuality was created on AVEN for Ace 101-level visibility, not to actually enforce who can call themselves asexual. People who don't meet the "little to no sexual attraction" definition — or people who technically meet it, but who feel their asexuality revolves around a different criteria that's more personally meaningful to them than attraction — have been calling themselves ace for as long as ace communities have been around. But unfortunately, the "visibility" definition worked a little too well, and the modern ace community has forgotten a lot of that crucial history!

You'll hear "asexuality is purely about attraction, not action" a lot in defense of how asexuals who have sex are still asexual — and, to be clear, asexuals who have sex are still asexual, resoundingly so, and including them is important, I highlighted them in the original post for a reason — but "attraction only, not action" is not the correct argument to make for their inclusion! The correct argument is "different asexual people will be asexual for different reasons, where some people consider their attraction/lack thereof the most important factor, regardless of whether they have sex, whereas other people consider their aversion to sex the most important factor, regardless of whether they experience sexual attraction — and they are all equally asexual." The point is that we all get to decide for ourselves what the most important factor in defining our sexual orientation is. Attraction for some, actual sexual interest for others, probably a secret third thing for even more people too.

Personally, I identify as ace because I experience feelings that meet some subjective definitions of sexual attraction, but definitely don't meet the criteria of others, and rather than trying to decide which of those flawed definitions is most correct, I find the fact that I don't like having sex to be a lot more personally important to how I conceptualize my orientation. It frees me from having to agonize over what sexual attraction really is, when the concept is 95% irrelevant to me anyway. I don't know what being forced to define my sexual orientation based on attraction would do for me other than making me really annoyed about sexual attraction as a vague social construct, while impairing me from communicating any aspects of my relationship to sex that I actually find meaningful or relevant to my life. That's not quite the same as being an ace who experiences sexual attraction, since my whole view has been shaped by being in that gray area, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the problems with the attraction framework being mandatory instead of optional.
