Flipnotes continued….. Been thinking a bit about my mermaids again, mostly just how they hunt.

Their fleshy snout is meant to look like a dead fish, but also resembles a human face, depending on who’s judging. The mermaid lurks among thick mats of kelp and probably emits a strong fishy odor to really sell its bloated corpse shtick.

Here you go, anon! I’m still hammering our their designs; as you can see, they’ve changed a bit even since my last illustration….. Essentially they’re big chunky temnospondyls that stalk kelp forests and rocky shores. They use their flat front teeth scrape off starfish and chitons for an easy meal. They also lounge about piles of rotting kelp, prodding for carrion or lying in wait for an unfortunate seagull. When they do hunt, they are ambush predators. Their strange, sensitive faces can display a variety of colors based on mood.

I’m still hashing out a smoother transition between human torso and primeval salamander head, but I’m getting somewhere. There are actually several types of seaweed named “mermaid’s hair”, but I based this one’s locks on Polysiphonia.

These big merms are often found in the relatively calm waters of bays. Sometimes they may be spotted in the shallows, mouth agape like a crocodile, tempting small fish to seek shelter within...

My bullshit pet peeve is when people make up fake Latin names for fictional species. Not the fake Latin names themselves; they just always get the formatting wrong. They should always be italicized (or underlined if handwritten), with capitalization on the first letter genus name but all lowercase for the species name.

So:

Across the savannas and shrublands of Artechocene Africa, most of the fauna can be recognised as species that were already native to the continent: descendants of camels, bovines, rodents and hyraxes of all sizes run across the plains, but one herbivore stands out as particularly bizarre, the Plains Mantelope (Hippanthropus africanus).

This is a member of the mantelopes (Hippanthropinae), a clade of macropods mostly native to Afro-Eurasia whose ancestors emigrated from Australia during the Australasian Faunal Interchange, and slowly spread across the continent, becoming the first marsupials on Africa and Eurasia. Species in this subfamily are characterised by their unique mode of locomotion, as they run bipedally on a single hoofed toe instead of hopping, using their muscular tail for balance. Their muscular arms are then used mainly as support for when they're grazing on all fours and to access tubers and other vegetable material.

The plains mantelope (H. africanus) is the most common species on the African mainland, being found from the southern cape to the southern slopes of the Ourean Mountains and Arabia, all thanks to its ability to eat the toughest plant materials and survive with very little water.

They live in small herds of a dominant male, a dozen or so females and their children, where younger males will often challenge the dominant male by fighting using their sharp hand claws.

I'd recommend turning the sound on. The seal is not screaming. It's not very loud at all, actually, but the noise it's making is Much Worse.

Amphibian August #18 – Koolasuchus

Temnospondyls were hard-hit by the extinction event at the end of the Triassic, with only a few making it through to the Jurassic. They continued to decline, and eventually only one group persisted into the start of Cretaceous – the giant salamander-like brachyopoids. If modern amphibians aren’t in fact the living descendants of temnospondyls, then these ones were the very last of their kind.

Koolasuchus lived during the Early Cretaceous of southeast Australia (~120 mya), and was the latest-surviving known member of the group. Only fragmentary fossils have been found, but it may have grown up to a maximum estimate of 5m long (16′4″).

At the time, Australia was still connected to Antarctica and was located partly within the Antarctic Circle. While the climate there wasn’t as cold as it is today, it was still relatively cool for the Mesozoic. Notably, crocodiles were completely absent from the area due to these lower temperatures, leaving the large aquatic predator niche open for Koolasuchus to occupy.

Within the next 10 million years, however, temperatures warmed and crocodiles moved in, quickly out-competing Koolasuchus and leading to its extinction.

Not much to say about it, this Gerrothorax just jumped from the edge of a pool facing a waterfall, towards its fall of hundreds of meters. It was own choice or just accident? we just don’t known.
