Learning languages and solving linguistic puzzles: two great topics that we're always interested in a new angle on!

In this bonus episode, Lauren and Gretchen get enthusiastic about some of our favourite deleted bits from recent interviews that we didn't quite have space to share with you. First, an excerpt from our interview with Danny Bate, host of the podcast A Language I Love Is... about a language he loves: Czech! We talk about learning languages through in-laws, stock phrases, and hidden etymological parallels, and Danny attempts to teach Gretchen the most uniquely Czech sound (ř, the voiced alveo-palatal fricative trill). Second, more from Claire Bowern about the mysterious Voynich Manuscript, including a peek inside her super multidisciplinary class on the topic (which draws on related fields from medieval studies to information theory) and the story of World War II codebreakers who worked on the manuscript in between solving lightning-fast crossword puzzles and the Enigma Machine.

Horký úchop též - měli bychom normalizovat používání zájmena "ono". Někteří mají dojem, že je to dehumanizující, ale osobně to miluju a vesele používám. Říkám si, že spíš než hledat novozájmeno by bylo lepší využít toho přirozenýho středního rodu, kterej nám naše mateřština poskytuje.

"oni" v češtině nefunguje jako v angličtině, máme do toho přidružený shody na slovesu atd který s tím nedávají smysl

"one" je dobrý ale dost nový, takže je to hodně o zvyku

"ono" - dechberoucí, úchvatný, dokonalý, nádherný

Málem bych zapomněla - pak jsem to lowkey zachránila když jsem řekla, že teoreticky Řehoř Samsa taky nebyl brouk, ani hmyz, jelikož je popisován s členitým krunýřem a nespočetnými nohami, tudíž by popis seděl spíš na korýše typu svinky a stínky, ergo jsou termíny hmyz a brouk irelevantní, protože nejsou respektovaný ani ve zdrojovým materiálu.

Myslim ale, že to nevyznělo nutně takhle konstruktivně

"crochet can't be made by machines" went from being a cool fun fact to being a call to action of "so if you see mass manufactured crochet in Target, that was made by a person and they were underpaid and you should boycott it" which is true, it was made by a person, but EVERY item of clothing you own (that you did not purchase from a company using ethical labor) was made by a person being underpaid (at *best*.)

Sewing machines are operated by *people*. Knitting machines are operated by *people*. Yes lots of the process is automated but you cannot tell a machine "make me a t-shirt" or "make me a knit cardigan".

Higher awareness of fast fashion, and the true human labor and abuse behind it, is GREAT, but let's not pretend that the crochet hat in target is THE problem. Every article of clothing in target is the problem. "All clothes are made by people" is the jumping off point here into understanding this issue it's not just crochet it's the whole thing ahhhhHHHHHHHHHH

If the next showrunner for Doctor Who wanted to hire you and/or your wife to create an alien language, would you do it?

Assuming the particulars were in place, of course. It seems doubtful, though, as the point of a show like Doctor Who is they go from place to place, seeing new things each episode. A created language usually works best when you stay with those speaking it for multiple episodes—something like Game of Thrones, where you're expected to see the same characters (and new characters from the same group of people) throughout the life of the series. I doubt an actual conlang will ever be seen in Doctor Who.

I'm not a Dr Who superfan or anything, but wasn't there a conlang in the series already, Circular Galisomething? Though I suppose that's not a full conlang, just a writing system, right?

In any case, I think that the Daleks deserve a language, if they don't already have it.
