The Bear: A very vague timeline

Some notes:

These are details I’ve observed from the show and from various posts I’ve read and is by no means exhaustive.

That said, if you have any references to add or edit, just reply or DM me and I’ll be happy to update this post! I know this timeline is something a LOT of people are curious about, and I think it’ll be great to have an documented reference available.

Latest updates will be in red.

Dates in bold are confirmed dates.

Pre-show events

Nov. 15, 1979: Michael is born.

(?): Sugar is born.

1988-1992(?): Carmy is born. (I'm assuming he's the baby based on how Richie talks about him at the hardware store, and a comment about him still being “in that deadbeat’s balls” in 1987.)

1992: Carmy's dad and Cicero take a picture together at Repeat Party, Grand Park.

(?): Carmy's dad buys the restaurant.

(?): Carmy's dad passes away either leaves the family or passed away; this is unclear. He's too young to remember much about him.

~Nov. 1994: Michael's 15th birthday party. Giancarlo and Fak get into a fight, Carmy tries to break it up and falls into the barbecue.

~2002: Roughly the last time Cicero spoke to Carmy's dad, they had a gnarly fight about stupid shit--alcohol, drugs, a million things.

(?): Sunday with Michael, Sugar, Richie, and Carmy. Carmy does not have any forearm or hand tattoos.

(?): Richie makes a reference to Carmy traveling halfway around the world as part of his cooking training/career. Maybe he went to Noma in Copenhagen at this time?

(?): Carmy works at the French Laundry in California.

2018: Carmy receives his James Beard award for Rising Star chef (I still need to look up this screenshot to confirm the exact name/details).

2020

(?): Michael shuts Carmy out of The Beef entirely. Carmy spirals and starts getting really, really good at being a chef.

2021

(?): Carmy is working at a fine dining restaurant in New York under an asshole exec chef. This could be at Eleven Madison Park.

December (?): Mikey hosts a Christmas gathering where he makes lemon chicken piccata. Carmy's mom is also in attendance, and Tina confirms for Carmy that she wasn't calm (Carmy's words: "full psycho").

2022

My guess is that the first season happens over roughly four months, starting with two weeks after Michael’s death. A couple of people have pointed out that Sugar’s voicemail dates episode 3 as Mikey’s birthday, November 15, which throws my original dates off a bit (but makes more sense with the cold weather. 😆)

Feb. 22: Michael passes away.

Sept-Oct?: Carmy comes in to take over The Beef. Sydney comes in to stage.

Nov. 15: Sugar calls Carmy and leaves a voicemail, thinking of him on Mikey’s birthday.

(?): The Beef closes, The Bear is announced.

And that kind of confidence, you know, like I was finally - I was good at something, that was so new, and that was so exciting and I just wanted him to know that and, fuck, I just wanted him to be like, “Good job!” And the more he wouldn’t respond, and the more our relationship kinda strained, the deeper into this I went and the better I got. And the more people I cut out, the quieter my life got. And the routine of the kitchen was so consistent and exacting and busy and hard and alive, and I lost track of time and he died. And he left me his restaurant. And over the last couple months I-I’ve been trying to fix it ‘cause it was in rough shape, and I think it’s very clear that me trying to fix the restaurant was me trying to fix whatever was happening with my brother. And I don’t know, maybe fix the whole family because that restaurant, it has and it, it does mean a lot to people. It means a lot to me. I just don’t know if it ever meant anything to him.
