I just mean like—you, Billy, the demobats, the—” Steve’s voice trails off, distant for a second, like he was going to say something else and then decided not to. “All I’m saying is, it’s a long line of people who have beaten my ass. I have a jaded interest in trying not to add to it.” Jonathan rolls his head over—feels how heavy it is, enjoys it, the looseness of it all—and narrows his eyes at Steve, who is looking at him plaintively. He has a sense of where this was going, and no real desire to follow it there, but he’s too damn tired and too grateful for Steve’s quiet home and good pot and newfound friendship to fully dig his heels in about it. “Teach me,” Steve pleads, hands clasped for effect. “Jonathan Byers, teach me how to not get my ass kicked anymore.” OR: Jonathan teaches Steve how to take a punch, and it goes very poorly, for both involved.

the duffer brothers having to contrive a time skip tell don't show random assortments of jancy relationship troubles in order for them to break up because having them break up without forcing it to be a great thing jonathan is happy about would be admitting they created like. the saddest most downtrodden character with no future known to man and also didn't give a fuck about him. like if jonathan were allowed to have a feeling in s5 it'd be distractingly miserable. how is nancy supposed to be a positive single girl power don't need no man only guns #femenisticon if we feel kind of bad that she broke up with jonathan...she can't so suprise! he's actually thrilled that she doesn't want a future with him! he is delighted that she thinks steve has better hair! he has no plans for his future now and no one else has said his name even one time in the past four episodes! <3
