Chapter One Here! -> 1
Second chapter below the cut!!
2nd Pov
Grif, Simmons, and Doc walked up to the Blue Base, the medic walked between them and as they approached and they managed to catch the tail end of the Blues conversation, “IF YOU’D SHUT YOUR FREAKING MOUTH!” Simmons and Grif exchanged glances, “Hey blues we’re here to-” Simmons cut himself off and stared in shock as the teal soldier stood up from where he’d been kneeling between their leaders' legs, “What the hell are you guys doing?!” he questioned praying it wasn’t what he thought it was, god he hoped it wasn’t, I mean in broad daylight on a roof no less.
As the teal one stepped away from the other Grif asked, “What were you doing down there?”
“Nothing. What’re you talking about?” Deny, deny, deny, just like those paternity tests.
“We were just playing a game!” Caboose yelled from behind him and the two reds saw that the leader had said something as the cobalt one stopped talking, though their leader still didn’t turn around and Grif turned to Simmons asking, “What in the hell is going on in this base?” Doc tilted his head in Grif’s direction and spoke to him quietly, “I told you these guys were weird.”
“What do you want, Reds?!” their leader hollered but still didn’t take any action to turn, “Get outta here or we’ll start shootin’ at ya!”
“Oh yeah?!” Grif yelled, “You care to make that threat to my face?!” and from the top of the base he heard their leader groan and release a defeated, “No.”
Vindicated Grif muttered under his breath, “Yeah, I didn’t think so. Punk.”
Simmons tried to keep the very fragile peace they already had and stop the situation from escalating, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down guys. We didn’t come here to fight. We just came here to give back one of the prisoners.”
“Give him back? You can’t just give him back, you took him. A deal’s a deal.” Tucker squinted when Church asked him, “Which medic are they giving back?”
“The shitty one.” Tucker said and Church groaned.
Tucker glared at the Reds, “And besides you're keeping the hot one! That’s not fair!”
Grif rolled his eyes, “Yeah! Well, forget it. We don’t want him! So here's the deal! you take this one and we keep the other one, we'll call it even, we each get a medic!”
“Fuck no! We don’t want the shitty one!”
Church interrupted the petty argument, “Well, sorry, you can’t have another prisoner! Those were our last ones!”
Grif and Simmons exchanged annoyed looks and Grif asked him, “Hey dude, what is your problem?” Simmons asked another question moments later, “Didn’t your mama ever tell you it’s impolite not to look at someone when you're talking to them?”
Ever helpful Caboose lied on the spot, “He’s shy!”
“Shut up!” Church looked over his shoulder at the group and shouted, “Look, we don't want him back, and we don’t care what you do with him. Now if you don’t mind, we’d appreciate if you’d leave us alone! We’re in the middle of somethin’... Kinda private over here.”
Grif looked over at Simmons, “That’s sad. He is shy.” Simmons in return sighed, “Fine, but don’t come asking for him back later.” The group turned and began walking away from the Blues, it was time wasted, and wasted time.
As he watched the three men retreat Tucker couldn’t help but get the last word in yelling “We won’t!” at the group just before they were about to disappear over the hill.
Wanting to get Doc off his back Grif tried one more time to give the Blues the medic back, “Last chance!”
“Beat it Reds!” Church screamed at the top of his lungs, he was very much done with their bullshit at this point.
“Alright, we're going, we're going!” Grif finally disappeared over the hil but not before sticking his middle finger up at the Blues receiving one back from Tucker.
Stopping just over the hill and in the middle of the canyon the three stood in a circle, “Man, I thought our team was obnoxious, but those guys are really rude.” Grif commented pointing at where they just came from.
“Whoa, hey, hey, whoa. Where do you think you're going?” Simmons asked, stopping Doc in his place when he started walking back in the direction of the Red base, “Back to base with you guys. They don’t want me over there.” Grif snorted slightly at Doc's words, “yeah, I don’t think so.” Doc looked over at him in confusion, “What? You’re not just gonna leave me out here in the middle of nowhere. By myself? What about [Name]?”
Simmons nodded at him, “yeah, that’s kinda the general idea.” Doc turned to Grif with a hopeful expression on his face under his helmet as he asked the man, “Not you too, right Grif? Old Buddy? Huh?” Grif looked at Doc and mimicked the words he’d been told a few hours prior, “Sorry, it’s pretty clear that you're not very popular around here, and if I’m gonna make any progress at all, I can’t be directly associated with you. I’m sure you understand.”
With that Grif and Simmons both turned and started walking back to the Red base, Grif looking over his shoulder as he walked and said, “Don’t worry we have a spare room your partner can stay in, we’ll be keeping them around.”
As the two Reds walked off Doc started walking back in the direction of the Blue Base again, maybe if the Reds had a spare room the Blues did too?
-=()=-
You and Donut were there to catch Sarge when he fell, the two of you supporting him on either side as you held him up. Grif and Simmons had worked together to back up the Warthog, though it was less of backing up and more of putting it in neutral before pushing it backwards while you quickly dragged their leader out from his position of being crushed.
You and Donut walked him slowly to the door of the base and before the three of you stepped inside (Or more accurately the two of you dragged Sarge inside) the Reds leader threw the two of his men that remained outside a look and they nodded, though the door slid open before you could question it and you quickly headed inside.
The two of you set Sarge on the couch and you both made quick work of removing his armor, you could see the bruises already forming on his torso, while you fiddled with the medical scanner and made sure it was working properly Donut went back outside, returning a few minutes later with the bag of medical supplies dropping it carefully in front of you, “Thank you Donut, could you go get DuFresne? I’ll need his help.” Donut froze for a moment and looked away slightly embarrassed, “He’s busy with the others, but don’t worry, I can be the nurse, I even have the outfit!”
“Wait what's DuFresne-” You were interrupted by a pained groan from Sarge as he tried to stand, “Shit! Fuck! Hey man you’ll be okay, just don’t move too much! Help me lay him down!” With Donut's help you both managed to force the man down, “Look dude, you may wanna stand up but I swear to aphrodite I will give you morphine if you don’t lay the fuck back down!” You held the man's gaze for a few moments before he tried to speak, "This diary blu-” You interrupted him, “Right now the Blues are winning the better patient competition, so if you don’t want my report to say “Poor management” I’d recommend sitting.” Sarge grumbled but ultimately sat back down and let you work.
“Do you have anything frozen? y’know since apparently you're out of water.” You asked and Donut scurried off further into the base, returning moments later with several bags of frozen vegetables which he dropped onto the coffee table and you and Donut promptly began placing on Sarge's chest and stomach.
This would be a strange sight to come back to.
“You stay here and lay back, in a few hours I’ll bandage you up.” You stood and Donut popped a VHS tape into the old box TV playing that one old military show he loved so much, Mash or whatever it was.
You pulled a small container of painkillers out and popped it open handing two of the small oval pills to Sarge, “Take these it’ll ease the pain.” You stepped away from him and pulled Donut with you whispering to him as you closed the bottle, “Those are pretty strong I think he’ll be out in an hour or so, just so he doesn’t try moving and making it worse.” You sighed, damn today had been a rough one, maybe when you saw DuFresne again you could- “Do you want a tour?” You looked at Donut and tilted your head in confusion, “Why would I need a tour?” Donut looked at you and rolled his eyes while smiling at you, “You're still technically our hostage, Duh. You’ll have to get used to this place.” oh right, you were a “Hostage” how great!
“I-I, alright, sure, where’s my cell?” you sighed in defeat and picked up your bags following Donut as he led you out of the living room, hey maybe you’d get a nice padded cell? The ones they gave insane people.
“You don’t get a cell silly, we couldn't afford one of those, trust me Sarge tried at the last meeting and I had to shoot that one down, it just wasn’t in the budget.” Donut led you to a door across from one labeled “Simmons and Grif” opening it to reveal a room similar to the dorms one would have in college, the room was divided in half, a twin sized bed and a small metal dresser on each side of the room, one side which you guessed was Donuts was covered in posters and photos of what you could only describe as “Male models” you chose not to comment on it instead glancing at the other side of the room.
It was bare, the walls the same depressing grey color as the rest of the base and the bed was just a mattress, it lacked the character of Donut's side, “You'll stay with me where I can keep an eye on you. Oh my gosh we can do facemasks, it’ll be like a sleepover!” Donut shrieked with joy and turned rushing down the hallway shouting as he turned the corner, “I’ll grab you some sheets, stay right where you are!” and you watched as he disappeared out of sight. You walked over to the bed and dropped your bags on the dresser before you took off your helmet and set it next to them, you were tired, today had been a lot, hell you’d done a lot.
You moved and sat on the mattress and then lay on it moments later, staring up at the ceiling and its light, it felt sterile and you zoned out, hands absentmindedly tugging on the straps of your chestplate tugging it off and letting it fall to the ground with a metallic clang, your arm plating following seconds after, the louder clang sound it made making you flinch and shut your eyes, what time was it even? You blinked your eyes in an attempt to stay awake, you should probably find Donut but what if he shot you for leaving or assumed you were trying to sneak out and attack them? Nah, he wouldn’t shoot you, and you felt a little ashamed for thinking he would.
Your eyes fluttered shut and you could feel yourself drifting to sleep.
-=()=-
“So do you want green sheets or-” Donut cut himself off when he looked into the room he was now sharing with their hostage, [Name] lay half on the bed with their legs hanging off the edge of the mattress, with the slow rise and fall of their chest Donut could tell they were sleeping and Donut took note of the fact that in his absence [Name] had taken off the top parts of their armor leaving them in their undersuit, their heavy chestplate along with the rest of their armor in a pile by the bed.
Smiling softy Donut crept quietly into the room and placed the two sets of sheets he’d found in the closet on the mattress and then walked to his desk writing a small note for [Name] and leaving it on the pile of sheets, he started picking up the room around them as quietly as he could. While the room wasn’t nearly as bad as Grif and Simmons (mostly because of Grif) he still hadn’t cleaned that much since up until today he didn’t have a roommate to worry about, well not since Lopez got kidnapped by the Blues.
Donut paused for a moment to look at [Name] from where he was currently picking up their armor, he had to admit, they were cute, and he definitely wouldn’t mind being their patient sometime, (especially if they were gonna give him a thorough examination-Who said that?! definitely not him!) he reached out with one hand and gently brushed away a piece of hair from their face and smiled when they released a small “Mhh?” noise at the contact, their eyebrows furrowing.
With the top parts of their armor set neatly on the dresser next to their bags Donut pulled some clothes to change into from his own dresser and walked to the door pausing to look back at [Name], Donut flicked the lights off and stepped out of the room leaving the door barely cracked allowing a small stream of light into the room so [Name] didn’t wake up in the dark.
Donut passed by Sarge passed out on the couch and changed the VHS out for the next episode then threw a blanket over the man. The vegetables had probably thawed by now but everything was weirdly calm and Sarge could be bandaged up after dinner, he was pretty sure anyways.
The painkillers [Name] gave him must’ve worked pretty well because Sarge didn’t even react when the blanket fell over him, his usually alert and trigger-happy nature subdued by the pills he'd been given.
Donut filled a pot with water and set it on the stove to boil while he went to shower and change, Donut was glad to strip off his armor and shower the cool water felt good pouring over him, he hoped Sarge was okay and he hoped the Grif and Simmons hadn’t killed the other medic by now, he seemed… okay for the most part, definitely shouldn’t be allowed to drive but otherwise nice.
Donut dried himself off and got dressed, passing Sarge's form on the couch and starting dinner. It was pasta night and Donut was the only one who didn’t manage to somehow burn water.
As he cooked his mind occasionally thought back to his new roommate, they’d seemed nice from what he could tell and he desperately wanted to get to know them better, calling them a hostage seemed rude in his mind and really based on what he knew of the Blues he guessed they’d be sticking around for a while since they’d been so easily handed over to the Reds.
Hey maybe they’d stay forever, Donut desperately hoped they’d be willing to talk celebrity gossip with him, Simmons and Grif never understood what he was talking about and he wouldn’t even try with Sarge.
“No he’s gonna get shot-oh hey Donut, pasta night?” Grif asked, he and Simmons had returned, their helmets now tucked under their arms as they were having some kind of discussion he wasn’t aware of, “Yeah Sarge is passed out on the couch and [Name] is asleep in my room.” Grif and Simmons silently exchanged looks and turned to Donut, “Your room, their staying in your room?” Grif asked incredulously, Simmons looking just as shocked, “Did Sarge okay this?!” Simmons asked, and Donut shrugged, “It’s not any different than you two sharing a room, I mean where else would they sleep on the couch? You know Sarge would say it’s a cruel and unusual punishment.”
Simmons nodded along with Donut in thought “I mean… Donuts not wrong Grif you’ve basically pressed the couch cushions to the point they’re the same density as concrete.”
Grif grumbled and rolled his eyes, “Whatever man I’m gonna go shower, call me when dinner’s ready.” Simmons followed after him the two wandered off to grab clothes and shower, Grif most likely unceremoniously collapsing for the hour it would take for Donut to finish dinner while Simmons would busy himself with something or other that most likely involved “Nerd stuff” in Grifs words or had something to do with impressing Sarge AKA ass kissing as Grif would say.
Donut started setting out plates as the food cooked, setting an extra place for their new guest/hostage.
-=()=-
You awoke when Grif and Simmons passed by the door, their conversation or more accurately their argument waking you from your nap, you pushed yourself up on onto your arms and looked around disoriented, the room was dark now save for the stream of light coming from the door that was slightly cracked open, fully sitting up you yawned and stretched, in the dark you could barely make out one of Donuts posters on the wall and when you moved your hand back to stretch it came in contact with the sheets Donut had left in the room earlier along with the small note.
You shuffled slightly so that the note was in the beam of light leaking in from the hallway and quietly read it to yourself, “I didn’t know what color of sheets you wanted so I left both, dinner will be at about 1900 hours :)” Donut apparently had very nice handwriting and there were a few pink hearts scattered about the paper and the I’s were dotted with even tinier hearts that made you smile.
Setting the paper aside you finished taking off the metal parts of your armor and setting them next to the others by the dresser internally thanking the man for making it nice and organized.
You dug through your bag of personal items and found an oversized T-shirt you’d stolen from DuFresne to throw on overtop of your armors undersuit, you’d ask about how they bathed later if they apparently didn’t have any water but when you stepped out into the hallway you heard the sound of running water coming from a door down the hall and as you let your eyes adjust to the dark you smelled something good coming from the opposite direction of the noise.
“What’re you cooking?” you asked, leaning against the doorway to the kitchen with a questioning look on your face and when Donut looked over at you from his place by the oven a grin broke across his face, “Pasta, we accidentally ordered waaaaaaay too many canned tomatoes, man I never thought I’d get tired of having thick liquids running down my throat but here we are.” Donut said cheerfully and you just stared at him for what felt like ages until a hand was placed on your shoulder, “Yeah he says shit like that all the time.” You smiled at Grif and his hand fell from your shoulder as he took a seat on the couch next to Sarges pulling a bag of chips from somewhere.
“Where’s the other one? Simmons right?” you questioned, you hadn’t had as many interactions with the man as the others, heck you hadn’t had any interactions with him at all yet, though maybe that was for the best, he seemed a little… unique. Not in the Caboose way though.
You awkwardly leaned against the doorway as you wondered what to do, ask if Donut needed help? Sit? Stay standing? Man you were shitty at this whole social interaction thing, DuFresne was always the one to talk and let you add in anything if you managed to rub your brain cells together and form a coherent thought.
As if sensing your turmoil Grif pointed to the spot next to him on the couch, “Wanna watch a movie? Sarge if too knocked out to notice if we changed it.” You felt yourself freeze for a moment, Donut didn’t seem to care having already turned back around to focus on the food and you mulled it over for a moment before nodding and taking a seat on the couch, leaning against the arm of the couch and resting your head on your hand, despite the nap you’d taken earlier you were still exhausted.
You blinked trying to stay awake but it felt like everytime you closed your eyes the time between blinks increased and the world would get a little blurrier, the noise of the television and the sound of Sarge snoring falling into the background until eventually you moved, making yourself sit up in a last ditch attempt to stay awake, arms crossing and the next thing you knew you were leaning in the opposite direction without meaning to your head hitting something solid as you passed out again.
-=()=-
Simmons hadn’t moved an inch for the last five minutes, his body was rigid as [Name’s] head rested on his shoulder, his face was red, he’d never had anyone fall asleep on him, let alone someone cute like [Name] their hair fell around their face and their body felt soft as it pressed against him.
Simmons had taken up the spot between Grif and [Name] after he’d finished showering, happy to change from his armor to a pair of sweatpants and a T-shirt, he’d noticed [Name] was leaning on their hand but he’d just assumed they were resting their eyes until they’d moved to sit up before promptly falling in his direction and landing on his shoulder causing him to release a small squeak before turning to Grif giving him a pleading look, “Help me!” he whispered desperately only for Grif to give the blushing man a grin, “I think your good man, hey Donut! Wanna add to the scrapbook?” Grif said a shit eating grin plastered on his face as the blonde turned around.
“That’s so cute! Let me get my camera, don’t move!” Donut abandoned the oven and rushed down the hall a slight thud heard as he crashed into something just out of sight before he came rushing back in holding an old polaroid camera with a few stickers on it.
As Simmons sat frozen in place trying not to disturb [Name] Donut took as many photos as possible until he had a small stack which he rushed off to hide where Simmons couldn’t find them, “Donut I’ll-” Simmons heard a groan from his shoulder and shut up quickly watching [Name] blink away the sleep in confusion, and reach a hand up to rub at their eyes before turning slightly and looking at Simmon’s blushing face from only an inch away.
[Name] Jerked back, their face going red as they mumbled out apologies, “I’m so sorry-I should’ve-I don’t know what-” they were interrupted by Grifs laughter, “Holy shit the two of you are tomatoes right now! Speaking of tomatoes… Hey Donut, when's dinner gonna be ready?!”
-=()=-
Dinner was good and you had to admit that Donut was a good cook, the pasta was nice and you actually felt like eating for once. Everyone had spread out about the base, Sarge had a plate placed next to him on the coffee table for when he woke up, Simmons had gone off the second he’d gotten his food in a hurry still embarrassed by earlier but you made sure to throw him an awkward smile as he left, Grif stacked his plate with food and wandered back to the couch and resumed watching TV but not before asking you if you’d like to smoke with him after dinner, he’d been very pleased with your answer of “alright”, then there was you and Donut, the two of you had grabbed dinner and gone back to your room, taking a seat on the floor between the beds.
“So where’s DuFresne?” Your questioned, now realising that he hadn’t come back with the others and a pang of worry passed through you, your movement pausing the fork in your hand now resting on your plate as you set it down.
“You mean Doc? I think he’s with the Blues right now.” Donut didn’t seem phased and you decided to ask Grif later, he’d been with him anyways, and the Blues couldn’t possibly be as bad as they’d seemed, what with the fact they were willing to just hand you over to the Reds, who had, much to your surprise, been pretty welcoming.
“Hey, could I take a shower after dinner? I haven’t had one since the last base I was at.” You asked through a mouthful of spaghetti. Donut nodded a bright smile on his face, “Of course! As I always say, a soldier who’s clean is a happy soldier!” You smiled and you just had to ask about the water thing, “So Grif said when I first arrived that you guys were out of water, what's up with that?” Donut rolled his eye’s, “he always says that, he’s trying to scam anyone who comes here into taking pity on him and giving him snacks.”
“Oh… So what’s with all the posters of half naked dudes?”
“They're my role models, I wanna look just like them one day.”
“So oiled up and shirtless?”
“Pretty much.”
Man this place was fucking weird, you hoped DuFresne was having a less weird time with the blues.
-=()=-
“Please don’t eat D batteries, they won’t give you more energy!” Doc begged as he and the other two Blues tried to hold Caboose down and force his mouth open, when he’d been let into the base he hadn’t expected this, to be holding down a fully grown man in dinosaur pajamas who was convinced that if he ate D batteries he’d be able to stay up all night.
-=()=-
You had been given permission from Donut to lock the door to the locker room, letting the blonde know that you in fact did not need a shower buddy to scrub your back but that it was a nice thought.
You placed the pile of clothes and soaps on the bench and looked around, the tiles were a beige color that reminded you of the ones in basic training, man basic was a long ass time ago, you remember sliding tortillas under peoples door then running like hell, wild times.
You took a seat on the bench and started and pulled the t-shirt off over your head, folding it your hand traced over the worn letters, “UNSCMT” you missed the old group and somewhere out there in the great expanse of the galaxy you knew that they were living lives you’d likely never know about, never see them again, and in a sense it brought you comfort, because if you’d ever meet them again it would be in a scenario where more than just two medics were needed, you could never watch someone die just to see your friends again.
As you folded the shirt and started taking off your under-armor your dogtags clinked against each other, finally free from being pressed against your skin all day, one from basic training and one was your medic ID tag, the third you covered quietly as you slid the chain off your neck, refusing to acknowledge it, wasn’t like you’d ever see her again.
You set the dogtags on the bench next to your clothes before standing, wrapping a towel around your body, it was plush and much like most things around the base, it was some shade of red, you walked to the showers, there were a few stalls in the back that blocked the view of anyone else though you decided to use one in the middle of the room, you were comfortable enough in the fact that based on what you’d seen of the red team none of them were smart enough to pick a lock or create a peep-hole.
You stood to the side and turned on the water, holding your hand underneath the water until it was the right temperature then took the towel off and put it on the small hook by the wall, you sighed as the water hit your shoulders and the room slowly started to steam up, the mirrors over the sinks fogging up and preventing you from seeing your reflection in them.
Things were quiet as you washed yourself, the occasional clang, or thud sounding from outside the bathroom door, but otherwise no one interrupted your shower, it was pleasant, and as for your first time being held “hostage” it was pretty good so far.
When you turned the showerhead off and grabbed the towel to wrap around yourself, you made your way to the bench sitting on it and hissing at the feeling of the cold metal pressing against your bare thighs, “Fuck!” you cussed into the empty room and tugged the towel down to cover more of your skin.
You pulled a hair brush from your bag and started carefully tugging knots out of your hair, working quietly you mind relaxing as you started humming one of the few songs you knew.
As you tugged on a particularly nasty knot there was a knock on the door and Donut's voice called out to you from the other side, “Whenever you're done getting dressed can you come and check on Sarge? He’s awake now.” You looked over at the door, “Yeah I’ll be out in about ten minutes!”
When you finished tugging the knots out of your hair you dug though the bag until you found a pair of underwear, socks, sweatpants, a sports bra (If your a gorl), and a t-shirt, sliding them on as you dropped the towel onto the bench, and once you were dressed you folded the towel and placed it in the laundry bin alongside an orange towel and a maroon one.
Stepping out into the hallway you shivered, the steamy warmth of the showers slowly dissipated as the chill of the hallway made you wanna turn around immediately and seek the warmth again, but you prevailed, and with the bag slung over your shoulder you walked down the hall to Donut’s, and now yours shared room, dropping the bag just inside the door and grabbing the other full of medical supplies.
Your feet padded along the metal floor and as you stepped into the living area you were met with the sight of Donut, Sarge, and Grif, Donut placing the now melted and thawed bags of vegetables back into the freezer, and Sarge giving a lecture to Grif who was dressed once more in full armor with the exception of his helmet which was held under his arm as he leaned heavily against the wall rolling his eyes at every other word the severely bruised man said, “And if I had my shotgun right now I’d shoot you right in the!-”
“Excuse me?” Everyone turned to look at you, Sarge momentarily pausing his lecture to stare at you, Grif throwing you what you assumed was a grateful look while the man was turned away and Donut threw you a happy grin, almost dropping the water logged vegetables in the process.
“How’re you feeling? We had to give you a lot of painkillers.” you moved and took a seat on the couch next to him, setting the bag down and beginning to pull bandages and neosporin from it, “Well medic, I feel like my bones are dust and if I turn my body in any direction I’ll snap in half… so pretty normal for me, though my hatred for Grif is unusually high for this time of day, it’s probably because he isn’t on patrol right now!” his head snapped in the direction of Grif who just rolled his eyes again, “Isn’t your hatred for me a normal thing by now?”
“Why I oughtta!” Sarge started ranting again with his fist shaking in Grifs direction while you spaced out and started wrapping him up, covering most of his chest in neosporin with a glove and then taking the bandages and wrapping his chest, over one shoulder across his back, then around his stomach up over the other shoulder and repeat a lot of times until you ran out of the roll.
“You should be all good now, just take it easy and don’t sleep on your stomach for a while.” You said with a smile on your face as you pulled away from him, “I should probably head to be-” You were interrupted by Grif, “I’m gonna take our “Hostage” outside for some fresh air, y’know don’t wanna be cruel and unusual.” You blinked a few times, what the fuck was that?
“Usually I would refuse such an idea but since our medic isn’t technically a dirty, filthy, no good blue I’ll let it pass, this is the most responsibility you’ve ever taken on Grif, I’m shocked and praying I’m still on the painkillers.” Sarge said and the second you stood he stretched himself out on the couch again returning to watching whatever show he’d been engrossed in earlier yelling at someone in scrubs.
Grif didn’t bother putting his helmet on as you both exited the building instead dropping it into the grass by the door the two of you making your way to the roof, it was sunny out, it always was here apparently and the sleepy feeling that had settled into your bones began to dissipate replaced with a tired but awake one.
The two of you just sort of sat on the roof and stared at the Blue base for a few minutes until Grif pulled out a small case and opened it to reveal a couple of joints, offering you one to which you shook your head at and he shrugged, pulling one out for himself and putting it between his lips, lighting it moments later setting the case on the roof between the two of you, “So why’d you drag me out here?” You questioned, letting your body fall back onto the roof of the base, your legs dangling over the edge as you stared at the sky, watching each cloud pass by.
“Trust me you don’t wanna be around for Donuts “Nighttime routine” I had to wear a facemask the last time I was around and I was stuck with orange fingernails for weeks, Simmons teased the shit outta me for it.” Grif took a long drag from his joint and exhaled a cloud of smoke away from you and in the direction of the Blue Base, “Besides, Simmons was too busy with a Star Trek book or something else nerdy.”
“hmm.” You nodded and Grif laid back onto the roof next to you, your head almost touching his as you stared up at the sky, “What made you wanna be a medic? You seem like, and I don’t wanna offend you, but like you would’ve been off doing something else, maybe a doctor or a nurse.” You looked at a few clouds, smiling when one passed by that looked like a fluffy cat before you frowned slightly, “I wanted to be a doctor, or even a nurse but… My family wasn’t very well off, so I signed up for the military's medic program. If I couldn’t be a doctor myself I could at least make sure people lived long enough to see one. What about you Grif? Why are you here? Sign up or drafted?”
Grif took a moment, taking another drag and exhaling before he spoke, weed clouding his judgement and removing all the consequences that could come with telling a stranger his life story, “I signed up, I couldn’t handle being at home, especially the circus, my sister… I think she’s okay, I send her some of the money I make but we haven’t talked in a while. I just… everything started bubbling up and I didn’t wanna stay, especially after Millie.” You looked over at Grif questioningly, “Millie?” Grif sighed, “She was my first girlfriend, she kept things from me, my secrets were hers but her secrets weren’t mine, she liked to keep things from me, a lot of things, and it turned out she used to be a guy, not a big deal but she didn’t tell me til we almost had…” he trailed off and took a deep breath his voice coming out shaky, “She just could be honest, it-we-I” You let him take his time and when you saw tears form in the corners of his eyes you reached out and brushed your fingertips just barely against his. The invitation was open, he just needed to take it.
You were glad he did, his hand gently held yours and ran your thumb across his knuckles letting him take all the time he needed to calm down, “Here pass me that.” With little to no protest you carefully took the still burning joint and snubbed it into the metal of the roof before slipping it back into the once discarded case, it was still mostly unused and while you didn’t know much about weed you guessed it could be re-lit.
-=()=-
“So how long’s your patrol?” Grif looked over at [Name] in slight confusion, the world around him moving slightly slower, or was he moving faster? In reality his brain was just taking longer to catch up but eventually he got back on track and cringed slightly, yeah they were supposed to be a hostage, one which had spent the entire day on their feet moving and trying to keep the dumbasses he was surrounded by alive, their voice, which he had just now picked up on, sounded utterly exhausted and it was followed by a yawn from the them, their free hand covering their mouth as they did so.
“You can head to bed, Donut's probably asleep by now and besides I’m on patrol for another three hours, Sarge’s still pissed I took a nap earlier.” Grif waited for them to leave, to release his hand or stand and tell him goodnight but instead he felt [Name] give his hand a gently squeeze before they turned onto their side to look at him their eyes giving him the softest look he’d ever received, they were warm, and he got lost in them for a while until he heard them speak, their voice barely above a whisper, “I’ll stay, your high as shit anyways so as a medic I have to keep an eye on you.” [Name] leaned in slightly closer and Grif held his breath as their lips formed a teasing smirk as they spoke, “Besides there’s no one to walk me back inside, what if I decide to run off and tell the Blues now's the perfect time for a surprise attack?” They snickered and Grif found himself laughing quietly alongside them.
Grif took the case of joints and slid it back into his armors pocket before giving the medic his full attention where he found himself talking in hushed whispers with [Name] the two of them snickering to themselves as the time ticked by and when Grif went to ask them a question he got no response.
When Grif tilted his head to look at [Name] he saw that their eyes were closed and their breathing had evened out, they were asleep but their hand still held his gently and Grifs eyes drifted from their closed ones down to their lips wondering what it would feel like to…
Grif let his own eyes shut as his mind trailed off into thoughts of how much trouble he’d be in for sleeping on duty, but he didn’t really care, he never did, and especially right now he’d deal with any consequences no matter how bad they were.

When Simmons came to relieve Grif of his position he he’d expected the man to be asleep just like all the other times but what he hadn’t expected to see was [Name] passed out right next to him, the two of them barely a foot apart, their hands brushed against the others as they slept.
He’d kicked Grif awake and had kneeled down and gently shook [Name] awake, the medic mumbling incoherently as they blinked away the sleep, staring up at him with cloudy confused eyes, “Simmons? What time is it?”
Simmons put a hand on [Name]’s back and helped them sit up, Grif protesting, “Why do they get special treatment?”
Rolling his eyes behind his helmet Simmons tugged the half asleep medic up before gently pushing them in Grifs direction, “Because they were supposed to be in bed hours ago, and you were supposed to be on watch, besides, sleeping on the floor like this will mess up their back.” Grif put a hand on [Name]’s shoulder and their head lulled to the side “We can-I should- I think I need to-” They couldn’t finish their words trailing off as they watched the two.
“Take them to bed, my shift starts in ten minutes anyways.” Simmons jerked his head in the direction of the stairs and Grif didn’t hesitate in pulling [Name] away from work, throwing a jab at Simmons as he left with the medic in tow, “Only you would show up to your shift ten minutes early!”
“And only you would manage to fall asleep while watching a hostage!” Simmons yelled back though his voice cracked slightly when [Name] waved goodbye to him with a sleepy smile on their face.
While Simmons settled into his watch [Name] and Grif tiredly trudged back into the base only briefly acknowledging a snoring Sarge with an amused look exchanged between the two. Grif walked [Name] to their room and gave them a lazy grin as he left helmet held under his arm as he made his way back to his and Simmons' room.
When you walked into the room you stumbled in the dark and knocked into the dresser that held your armor, a piece of it falling onto the ground with a resounding thud the lamp on Donuts dresser flicking on moments later and casting the room in a dim light the man in question staring at you through bleary eyes, “Your back late. What time is it even?” He looked at the small digital clock next to the lamp and groaned at the time, it was apparently three AM, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up.” Donut smiled and you took that as him accepting the apology, he waited for you to put your helmet back on the dresser and get under the sheets before he turned off the light and in the dark you could barely see his face, “Thanks for making my bed Donut, you really didn’t have to.”
“No problem, you were busy talking to Grif anyways, and my facemask takes at least thirty minutes before I have to take it off so I had some time to kill.”
“Thanks anyways Donut.” You mumbled and reached across the small distance between your beds and grabbed his hand in the dark giving it a gentle squeeze. When you went to pull back Donut's grip tightened and you heard the sound of bedsheets ruffling as Donut climbed out of his bed and crossed the small distance to yours, he lifted your sheets and slipped under the covers, his hand still holding yours as he peered at you in the dark and you could make out the slight upturn of his lips, he was smiling at you and he whispered excitedly like it was a secret between two children and you found yourself giggling along, “This is like a sleepover!”
“Sure, one where I’m a hostage!” you burst into a small fit of giggles but Donut stayed quiet and you could faintly see that his brows were furrowed and his face had gotten serious, “You're not really a hostage, we all know that… Well maybe not Sarge but we don’t see you as one anyways… I don’t see you as one, I’d like to be your friend.”
“I’d like to be your friend too, so let's be friends.”
“Promise?” Donut held out the pinky of his other hand and you took it without hesitation, “I promise.” You both smiled and laughed at the childish act and Donut moved a little closer taking the hand he used to make the pinky-promise and using it to pull you closer until you were pressed against each other, his hand rubbing circles on your back as you fell asleep, slowly sliding lower and lower until his hand slipped under and up your shirt to rest on the small of your back.
“You're really cute, you know that?” Donut said to no one in particular, [Name] lay asleep next to him and he stared at them tiredly, his own eyes closing moments later, sleep taking him as well.
