Who did minifigures better?
Polly Pocket:
Lego:
Or The Terrible Movie Upside Down?:
I was just wondering if they had Stranger Things Lego minifigures while we finished Season 1. Oh yes, this is a Stranger Things rewatch update! We’re starting Season 2, here’s some of our thoughts on Season 1!
The “wrist rocket” struck Greg as super audacious, even for kids. A long shot with a slingshot, like, outside of David and Goliath it seems a little unlikely to work. Especially compared to plan Jonathon and Nancy’s monster barbecue with a side of nail bat (basically like Neegan’s Lucille in The Walking Dead, just a gruesome weapon).
Greg says Barb was done dirty yet again, preyed upon and then all gross in the Upside Down like that! I thought it was pretty wild to remember when getting photographed by weird lurkers was NOT the norm. When I saw the Stranger Things kids reacting to Jonathon’s candid photo hobby, the pre-social media world came back to my mind. Speaking of the 80s, Greg points out that the government employee scenes were perfectly over-the-top in just the perfect 80s cheese way to feel like the movies and shows made back then. Also the goofy ineffectual dad like Mike and Nancy’s, is such an 80s trope!
Eleven’s journey is so striking. On the one hand, we as the audience get to see her psychic and telekinetic powers increase from just crushing cans to remote viewing and even just throwing people around or popping their heads from the inside. I also think it’s a super poignant portrayal of her increasing her non-psychic powers as well. She really appears to have selective mutism from trauma, like I can see the pain in her eyes when she wants to communicate worlds of information to her friends but can only instead just croak out a few syllables at best. Greg pointed out that she throws a lot of people and things around when she’s being “011”. But it hurts, exhausts, and scares her to keep up that level of power all the time. So I think it’s like she hasn’t found that middle ground between feeling safe enough to express what’s inside her as a person in everyday ways, and going all out a thousand percent on a psychic rampage. Which makes sense, because when did she ever get to practice being “El” (vs “011”)?
(As an aside, it was fun for me to see the outfits everyone wore to the primer. I loved Millie’s look!)
Stranger Things Rewatch Night 1
We started our Stranger Things rewatch party last night with the first two episodes of Season 1! Continuing tonight with episode 3 (our whole schedule is in the previous post).
Grea noticed that the first time we see lights flickering is at Mike’s house, when the kids are going home after Dungeons & Dragons, as they stand by the garage. Foreshadowing, general creepiness, or did the Demogorgon follow Will from there?
He was also noticing how neatly they introduce each character to Eleven in turn. El looks so small and delicate, even though since this is a rewatch we know she is very powerful.
I was noticing the use of colors in different scenes. The restaurant is so stark, almost monochrome, with the mustard bottles and Eleven’s shirt adding a lot of warm yellows. The Byers’ home is almost greyed out, with muddy colors.
I also noticed Mike’s mom’s hair and clothes! I think they’re pretty but dated and not to my personal taste, but most striking to me was that I can’t think of a modern style equivalent or aesthetic these days. I like the #retrofashions a lot (though I think they did Barb dirty to try to emphasize she’s not an “in crowd” type).
As 90s kids, we can remember kids going out qnd exploring a lot, but we think this show depicts the kids sneaking out and traveling a LOT! Especially at night! How would that compare to when and where you grew up at their age?
Happy Halloween! We will be celebrating by starting our Stranger Things rewatch party, counting down to the new season releasing this November and December. If you want to watch with us, a PDF of our schedule is up on our Linktree page.

I can’t find these anywhere online! New old stock Holly Hobbie dry erase boards from 1990. We got them in a huge overstock lot we bought from a toy store that was moving. They’re made in one piece from a thick sheet of plastic. A dry erase marker’s lid clips through the side hole, making the board balance on its off-center hanging hole.
