Hey all!
It's been a while, but I honestly think that this is the only time that I have been able to put into words how I felt during the ending of Stranger Things and specifically, during Will's coming out scene.
the way queerness is presented within the show has never been vocalized or verbalized in any way shape or form other than through metaphor, similes, illusions, etc. so that's why the coming out scene had so much potential and so much weight. It's because it's the only time that queerness is addressed verbally. and I really do think that the issue lies within the fact that queerness is seen as the failing, rather than any faulty system created against it, or any potential imposter syndrome feelings that Will might be having towards himself. the only issue that is presented in Will's monologue is the fact that he's queer. that is the only thing being engaged with: his gayness or queerness is what's wrong with him. Oh no but it's ok because he can fix it because he's so normal other than that. and that's really what irked me throughout that scene/the ending because it's never addressed again. it's never addressed before.
The only time we ever see queerness being addressed is through the guise of it being the only moral fault in the conversation. Will never talks about how he's made to feel about being queer. He never talks about the horrors of the world itself. He only talks about queerness, as if it's something he can bypass by being the "perfect gay boy"or "normal" aside from his sexuality
Ugh whatever im actually so not okay.
Hopefully someone understood what i meant by this post lol
