Raven’s Call 2020.
@blxckworn – for Mallory:
“Come back here–” Borra was silent much of the time. He could land like a breath of wind when he wanted to; shift without even disturbing the earth. Suren, in mud up to her thighs, sloshed through one of the swampy creeks after the wallerbog who casually walked off with an adornment from her half-repaired armor, rustling reeds and making an unusual commotion. Big fey don’t usually end up in this leg of the water – let alone desert fey. “Alright.” She paused, the cold and cloying muck growing unbearable. “You’ve left me no choice.” Like the arm of a mother, a branch swept out of the ground to catch the chubby little amphibian with moth-like antennae. It was an unfair advantage on the larger fey’s part, but oh so necessary.
The leaves crunched between Mallory’s feet, the young princess just wandering around. She was usually outside, always looking for something to keep her entertained. Plus, it got her away from the castle and all the people.
As she continued to walk, she heard the sound of sloshing and someone’s voice. She vaguely recognized the voice and continued forward, and was delighted to find Suren. She grinned and waved excitedly. “Suren!”
That was a sentiment wholly understood by the other fey – who often, and without reserve, “aided and abetted” in Mallory’s vanishings. Human titles meant nothing; a child’s place was not trapped indoors. The wallerbog did a bit of a jig at being carried through the air to her, the bone beads they’d absconded with retrieved, and the little creature placed back in the stream where he belonged. (But small, swift branches bent down from the trees to scoop up her leather and hide before they could be toyed with further.) “Cowbird fledge,” she replied, fondly – being that she, and her mother, were not only placed among the fey to raise, but that they certainly did not belong in the human world whether or not they were born to them, “Up to no good?”
The young princess laughed at the sight of the wallerbog in the air and walked closer to where Suren was.
The fey, was no stranger, in fact right after Borra, she was Mallory's favorite; mainly because she would accompany her on her "adventures", as her grandfather John would fondly call them. It was really a wonder at how much the girl got away with, but she didn't complain.
She picked up the nearest rock and tossed it towards the stream, watching it skip. "I just got here actually, so not yet. I had to sneak away from an "important meeting". Honestly, I don't know why mother and father are still trying to get me to tag along, as soon as I take the throne, I'm going in a completely new direction."
“Would you mind?” Her voice, soft and melodic, barely carried across the meadow on the breeze. One of the petal sprites lingering nearby fluttered their butterfly-like wings, ascending to accept the wooden bead from her fingers to carry further up her in-progress braid. “Thank you.”
@blxckworn
He frowns; she seemed upset. He didn’t know why, but he could see it. As she talked, he got an idea.
He reached into his pocket, and retrieved a shiny, smooth rock. He had found it at the river this morning, along with many others, he wouldn’t miss this one. He extended his hand towards her and smiled. “Here, for you.”
There was so much to hidden in the summary of her words, though none of it for children. It could be banished, at times. Fanned away like lingering smoke. Sometimes it hung, heavy, in the air like humidity. Regardless of which it was then, Cassia smiled and offered her open palm to accept the stone. “Would you like a gift in return?” There were many things she could no longer do, but a few she certainly would never fail to.
He watched Cassia's reactions and was very happy to see her accept the stone and smile; he smiled with pride, he had successfully cheered up a friend. "No, it's okay. You just looked upset, I wanted to help."

Keir hopped around from one branch to another. Being in raven form was vastly different from his normal form. Everything felt more simple, and he could be aware of so many more things. Plus, he enjoyed seeing other birds confusion when they saw him, never truly knowing what he was but knowing something was off about him.
“Who knows? You might get the chance someday. The world is an awfully big place, after all. And until then, you might just discover something around here you never knew about. Life is full of surprises like that.”
He flaps his wings a bit and shrugs. "Maybe. At least my sister has a bunch of books that I can read."
“Oh, books are wonderful. Some might argue that they aren’t the same as experiencing things themselves, but a good book can take you places you’ve never seen before, and the stories they can tell ought to be treasured, I think. But then I’ve always been one for stories.”
He grins. "Exactly! I love reading, it may not be the same as watching but that just means I can think of the visuals in my head as the story goes! I dunno why some people don't like books. Father isn't the biggest fan of them, neither is mother, but my sister loves them! She has a whole library at her castle, it's incredible!"

“Oh, I see.” She nodded in understanding. “I’ve seen a couple of dark fey here and there, but the only one I’ve chatted with is one who calls herself Virgie. She’s nice, though it seems like she has a wounded spirit. It’s hard to explain. Anyway, I think you’re all very beautiful.”
"I've heard of her! There's a lot of us though, so keeping up with everyone is a challenge sometimes." He shifted a bit and tilted his head curiously. "I've never seen you here before. What're you doing out here? Where are you from?"
“I can imagine. I’m glad there’s a lot of you, though.” She smiled again. “I actually spend a lot of time out here because I enjoy nature and the forest in general. I was actually born many lands from here, but I started traveling when I was an adult. I’ve kind of lingered here for a while because it’s so pretty.”
"Wow..." Keir was slightly envious of the fact that this new stranger had traveled, that was something he always wanted to do. "I've lived here in the Moors my entire life. The farthest away I've ever been is the dark fey's nest."
“It’s a lot easier to travel when you can fly, I suppose.” Angwu grinned. “Confidentially, I can do a bit of that with my animal spirit as well, though probably not half as well as you can, and I’d have to rest far more often. The Moors are beautiful though; I can see why no one would want to leave for very long.”
He shrugs a bit. "It's home but.. there's so much out in the world, so much to see! I'd always wanna come back here, but I wanna just see new places, even if it's just once."
I wanna do something with Mallory, interact for a starter with her

@blxckworn:
Once he received proper consent, he reached out and carefully touched her wings. He studied them closely, taking note of all the different colors, and carefully traced the gold colored veins. “They’re really pretty.”
“Thank you.” As if she had any control over her genetics. “My parents gave them to me.” She tried to flare them in pride, to expand the gilded veins further for his examination…..but they would only cooperate to an extent before wavering. Old wounds left to linger.
Keir paid close attention as she tried to expand them. He frowned a bit when they wavered. “Are you okay?”
Ah – his mother hadn’t told him, then. “I am,” she replied, though the softness of her voice betrayed a lingering sorrow in it. “They don’t hurt any longer,” not often, anyway. “But they cannot do what they did once.”
He frowns; she seemed upset. He didn't know why, but he could see it. As she talked, he got an idea.

“Having an animal spirit is more of a partnership though,” she mused conversationally. “You have to learn to work with each other. Sometimes the animal spirit can take more control than one might like. I’ve never had that problem, but then I spend a lot of my time in the forest and flying about as I can, so maybe mine is happy.”
Keir flapped his wings and croaked happily. 'I could see why they would be happy with you!'
He had been considering changing, so that he could better talk to the new friend he had made. He finally decided on doing so and in a puff of black smoke, he went back to his regular form. His wings kept the same shape they did when he was a raven, they were just bigger now. His horns had been growing a bit, which was something he was proud of. He smiled brightly, his pointed fangs visible.
“Oh, thanks,” she replied, smiling. “We have a good partnership. Though people struggle with their spirits sometimes. I think it’s all about listening to and caring about each other.” She watched as he changed forms. “Well hello there,” she said. “You make a nice person too. Shifting must be a handy talent. You’re the first I’ve ever seen do it, though I’ve heard of people being able to, especially around here.”
She wondered if it were easier to fly around as a bird-it probably would be. Though if she could do that, she thought, she figured she’d have to learn how to fly all over again. Because birds flew differently, didn’t they?
He laughed a little, "I'm a dark fey actually, and half raven! My father can shapeshift as well but his ability is different than mine."

He half crouched, half sat down once she turned around. He was balanced on his toes and had his legs pulled up to his chest, his arms resting on his knees. He started at her wings as he talked, fascinated by the color of them. “Nowhere, just wanted to fly around.. though I was considering visiting Aurora.”
There was something so familiar in that position, in the curl of his little figure while perched, that it drew a brighter smile to her earth-dark lips. “Have you never seen wings of different kinds?” She inherited her father’s gentility; there was no judgement in the words, only a gentle sort-of amusement. “My mother was of the jungles; my father is….was of the forest, like your mother.”
Keir smiled a bit, enough that his fangs were visible. He continued to stare at her wings. “I’ve seen lots of different kinds, yours are just shiny. Shiny things are pretty.”
Maleficent’s child indeed. Most would pin that urge on Diaval, as if Maleficent wasn’t half-feral in her own right. She did her best to fan them, though they didn’t entirely cooperate, extending silent permission for him to touch the gold veins in them. They wrapped through her braids like decoration, also, although those were a bit more difficult to trace.
Keir watched as she extended them and started to reach forward to touch them, but then he caught himself. Social cues weren’t his strong suit, and what seemed like an open invitation to him may have been misinterpreted. He looked to Cassia, “Can I touch them?”
She very nearly melted. His attentiveness was not only appreciated as courtesy, but personally. “You may,” she replied, offering a partial nod. They no longer caused her pain in any real way, though the damaged muscles occasionally ached from the effort of holding them aloft. He could do no harm in touching them.
Once he received proper consent, he reached out and carefully touched her wings. He studied them closely, taking note of all the different colors, and carefully traced the gold colored veins. "They're really pretty."
