Since everyone wants to make their peace on the whole Jimin situation, I would also like to make mine as one of probably many African American people who are fluent in this language.
I learn this language mostly because of my best friend who is Korean and I wanted to connect with her on a deeper level. She helped me through this whole process and explained meanings and context very well with me.
And the context and meaning behind Jimin statement wasn't negative because what I understood of it was the he was saying JK skin which was tanner than his/Jimin's was cute. I even reconfirmed everything with my best friend.
People who are claiming Jimin to be racist, I wonder do they know what true racism is. I'm a black women who lives in Mississippi where it is very much prevalent. I went to schools that were predominantly white. I have seen many looks pointed at me, I have experienced people avoiding my touch, I have been called names that have hurt my pride and my esteem. I know what racism is. And there is a difference between racism and ignorance.
Even if what Jimin said could be seen in a negative light it is due to ignorance not racism like people are claiming. So I'm not really mad at people if they see it in this light because Kpop in general is full of cultural appropriations.
What I don't understand is the whole cancelling nonsense, when a lot of kpop groups in general have done side eyeish shit based off of ignorance. Like no matter how much i love G-dragon and bigbang they have said and done things that made me side eye them , so why am I not seeing y'all cancelling them. No matter if Hwasa from mammamoo is my ultimate girl bias, that hefa said somethings that can come off as racist too, so why aren't y'all cancelling her. Hell even namjoon said the n word, so why aren't y'all cancelling him. This is what I don't get about these double standards . Y'all cancel jimin when Kpop as a whole can be ignorant of black culture.
Hell even my best friend said somethings that made me have to put her in her place about black culture. Hell she put me in my place when I said some side eye-ish shit about korea. We didn't cancel each other though because it is all from ignorance and we explain this.
Everybody and their momma probably said at least one thing that can come off negative, so why aren't we cancelling each other. I can't stand this hypocritical type of thinking.
Maybe people should try explaining shit like this to their idols so they can learn instead of cancelling them.
My pastor always says every time I go to church, if you look for hate it is easy to find.
Racism is ignorant, but not all ignorance can be seen as racist.
I just wanted to get this off my chest.
