“We named the bright blue dumpster outside Broadway” -Props Runner
Do you have any advice for college students who aim to do props for a living? You seem to be living the prop makers' dream right now and I was just wondering if there was anything in particular that you would recommend other prop people do/try? Thanks! Love your blog <3
Alright so I have much advice for you dear (which is part of the reason it’s taken me so long to answer it, sorry my friend!). Also thank you so much!
Take as many classes to learn as many skills as you can
Art, Sculpture, Engineering, Wood working, etc.
If there is an opportunity to learn a new crafting skill TAKE IT I don’t care if you never think you’ll need to know glassblowing, JUST DO IT. YOU WILL BE SURPRISED BY WHAT YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW.
Also ask people to teach you new things outside of classes
Get good at organization
You need to be able to budget, keep an up-to-date record of the status of all props in the show, organize your stock
Become a power shopper
Be able to search every inch of multiple shops for that bargain or one thing you might need for a show in quick succession
Learn to make friends with the thrift shop and antique people, you’re about to see them a lot (craft supply and lumber places too)
Start practicing how to make things
One of the best things a prop person can do in my opinion is getting a run down chair from a thrift shop and completely re-making it. New paint, new upholstery, fix all the cracks and problems, everything.
Become an excellent researcher
You will be looking up a lot of things, especially what a certain period prop would look like. Get good at navigating the internet.
Youtube is your friend.
Also get the Prop Building Guidebook by Eric Hart, seriously just buy it now. Also follow his blog Eric Hart’s Prop Agenda.
Gizmology
The ability to look at a handful of junk and create the prop you need out of it. You must get good at repurposing.
Get creative
Lots of places may not be able to afford the “proper” materials to do things. So you’re going to have to figure out how to coat foam without foamcoat 75%-90% of the time. Every place has their own creative solution, it’s up to you to find the best one.
Summerstock
Seriously go do it. It gives you a vast variety of experience, it trains you to work hard and fast, and it exposes you to more people who probably know different skills then you do and so can teach you as a result.
At conventions (USITT, SETC, etc) if Tom Fiocchi from Ohio U is there, go talk to the man. Also go visit the SPAM (Society of Props Artisan Managers) booth and speak to them (sometimes Eric Hart is there).
Here’s the skills I find most used in props:
Carpentry
Upholstery
Faux painting techniques
Crafting (Lots of hot glue and whatnot)
Photoshop
Sculpting (mostly styrofoam)
Molding & Casting
Sewing (So many curtains…)
Some metal work but not as much as you might think
Hope this helps you out!

Shoutout to playwright John Maclay for this gem of a stage direction.
When you’re about to turn the last light off before going to bed and you yell “going dark”
My friend 3D printed this for his light board: a Darth Fader.

I gotchu covered pal.
WHO SHOULD YOU FIGHT TECH EDITION
someone requested so here we go
lighting designers: like yeah you could try to fight them but they’d probs just blind you and then kick your ass while you’re trying to reorient 4/10 would not advise
stage managers: buddy. pal. please. SMs are the reason your sorry ass gets anything done and we all know it. sure maybe you could win but then your life will fall apart and you’ll be sad 0/10 terrible idea
costume designers: i mean if they have their shears with them avoid but otherwise they tend to be pretty easy to fight. your call man 6/10 possibility of success
makeup designers: why would u want to fight makeup designers???? they just wanna make u look awesome and scary let them live. plus they’d probably murder you when you don’t see it coming
fly crew: like you could try but they’d probably just bound away into the sky like fucking deer or something only attempt if you have wings
sound designers: like i wanna say we could kick your asses but in all honesty what are we gonna do? throw a speaker at you? no those are heavy and cost more than your student loans we’d just yell until you gave up tbh
fight choreographers: like do i even need to explain why this is a terrible idea. they have fight in their name they’ll kick your ass into next tuesday and make it part of the warmup
set designer: ok i have a grudge against a lot of set designers but also have you seen their equipment. do not i repeat do NOT take them on on their own turf. corner them in a parking lot or something
propsmaster: man they can turn anything into anything else who knows how many weapons they’ve got on them. on the other hand if you distract them with a challenge they will likely be pretty easy to subdue
dramaturg: history nerd to the max kick their bookloving ass if they deserve it they can’t fight back they’re not history BUFFS or anything amirite
