You were there. You were part of that world. POC did not just spring into being as slaves. There was a time before. You have a wealth of history, and a history of wealth. You have kings and queens and workers and merchants and craftspeople and families and lives. You were there. Remember that. Don’t let them edit you out. (Olaf Hajek, Black Antoinette 2)
They need to look. They need to learn. You do not all look alike. You are a multitude, a cacophony, a billion. You are beautiful and unique and wonderful and good and you. (Marelene Dumas, black drawings)
I was wondering if you could do photos of well off POC in Victorian era. A lot of American history books don't/hardly show them anything other than slaves or low-skill workers for that time frame. Since a lot of steryotypical pictures came out of that century, I thought it would be nice to see and aknowledge the beauty that was still there despite the erasure. (I do know those pictures may be hard to find though, so you could try looking at artist's work. I love your blog!)
This is absolutely something I want to post! If anyone has any recommendations of artists or artworks I should look at for this please let me know!
There’s something so weird and fucked up about an industry that will sell us colour correcting concealer and redness-reducing primers and imperfection-blurring creams and mattifying powders and skintone-evening foundations and then have the nerve to sell us blushers to add that colour back into our cheeks and highlight to mimic the shine we just paid to reduce.
SO fucked up.
Your natural skin is gorgeous, red cheeks that wont quit blushing, freckles that tell you when summer is here, spots and scars and hairs and dry patches and flaky areas and oily shine and all. It’s the stuff that’s holding you together and protecting you from the elements. You are free to put what you like on it but don’t let anyone tell you you have to cover yourself up for their profits.
(Moïse Kisling - Tête de Jeune Fille, n.d. Oil on canvas)
I have hip dips. For most of my life I had no fucking clue what was going on with my body, why I didn’t have that same line from waist to leg that my friends did. I thought I just had too much fat above it and believe me that kind of thinking will send you mad. Turns out that lots of people’s skeletons just give you a bit more room to move between your hips and your legs and that means you will get that dip right there. And that’s just fine! That’s normal! It’s lovely and delightful and gorgeous and it’s not something that will change so it’s time to start loving your dips. Who’s going to join me? (Károly Patkó - In front of a mirror (1926))
Andrew Wyeth - Bikini 1968
It's getting to that time of year when the adverts start. And the articles. And the facebook posts from competitive friends. You know the season. Not "summer", not "holiday season " , no it's the ubiquitous and alarming "beach body season"! When every bathing suit in your size comes with "secret slimming panels" and we learn once more that women with (whisper it now) BREASTS absolutely must not wear bandeau tops lest it summon the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Well let me tell you this: despite what the adverts tell you, you are allowed to have fun this summer! I'm personally giving you all a free pass to frolic in whatever bikini you think is cutest, to eat as many ice cream cones as you damn well please, to sunbathe (responsibly, use spf please) in view of whatever people are around, to bare your legs in their wobbly, pale, hairy gloriousness. This time, summer is ours.
You are beautiful. Completely. The lines on your forehead show years of caring, of concern. The bags under your eyes underline sleepless nights looking after your children. Your head rubbed bald from a lifetime of hair ruffles from your dad, years of being kissed goodnight. Your ears listen to others. Your mouth speaks kind words. You have so much beauty in your details. ( GABRIELE GRONES)
You are so unbelievably beautiful. Your eyes are so deep I could dive into them and swim for days. Your lips are so curved I could lie down at the top and roll downhill for miles. Your head held so straight and proud like a warrior, a dancer, defiant and glorious. You are so unbelievably beautiful. (Rudolf Swoboda, An Unidentified Man. c.1888-89, oil on panel. The Royal Collection, Osborne House, UK)
Your looks and your actions do not have to “match up”. You can do whatever you want with yourself. Just because you have cherubic curls and chubby baby cheeks and are small and soft doesn’t mean you can’t rock out with the best of them. Just because you have girl-next-door freckles and big blue eyes doesn’t mean you aren’t capable of swearing and spitting and stomping around. Just because you look like you walked out of a neo-classical painting doesn’t mean you can’t skateboard or wrestle.
Redefine the stereotype.
(Neo Classical, Alexey Kondakov)
It is really fucking unfair that athleticism is seen as masculine. It’s unfair to girls who are prevented from reaching their full strength, power, and potential. It’s unfair to boys whose health or interests don’t lie in the direction of sports.
People have muscles. PEOPLE. Not just men. And they don’t have to be bulging or visible - that’s superfluous, though if your muscles are visible that’s just fine too. You are allowed to use them to the best of your ability, whether that’s swimming or hiking or dancing or judo or doing a few sit-ups. And you are allowed to not give a damn about them at all. And that should have no bearing on your worth.
Girls - don’t trust anyone who says you look better thinner, or less muscly. They want you weak and you should question why.
Boys - it is not necessary for you to be strong and muscly to be loved. That is a fiction.
(Kōshirō Onchi, Diving (1932))
The female figure is repeatedly shown to us as elongated as possible, stretching the line, smoothing out the creases. We see it in the lounging ladies of classical portraiture. We see it in the fashion model stretching out a limb to show off a sleeve. We see it in the ballerina, balancing on point to lengthen the leg out to its limits. We see it when we’re told to sit up straight for our school picture.
But there is so much beauty to be found in the passionate playing of jazz piano, hunched over the keys to put their full weight behind a chord. There is spectacle in the wound up energy of a sprinter crouching at the starting line. There is joy in the curl of a girl in an armchair reading her favourite novel for the eighteenth time. There is life in the folds and the rolls and the crunches and the squishes of life. There is beauty in stretching on tiptoes sure, but we are not limited to one stance.
And if you CAN’T stretch out, if you have curves in your spine, or sticky out bits, or cant stretch your legs you are not shut out of beauty.
You are gorgeous just as you are, it’s just some lazy artist, who can’t be bothered to learn to draw something that’s not a straight line, that needs improvement.
(Martel Chapman - Jazz Piano Modern (2016))
Ok so when we look at ourselves it’s super hard to get the full picture.
All too often we get fixated on that slightly wonky toe you broke back in 5th grade or that prominent knee or that kind of chubby pubic area or that one breast that’s slightly bigger than the other or that one stubborn hair that always grows on your chin and this is where things go down the drain really quickly.
I have lost whole days of my life examining individual pores and picking the tiniest blemishes into raw bloody scarring marks. I have been so worried about what people will think of my slightly asymmetric smile to realise people are actually looking into my eyes.
They aren’t looking at your feet, they’re watching you dance. They aren’t weirded out by your knees, they’re marvelling at how fast you ran that marathon. They aren’t grossed out by your ladybits, they’re so fucking thankful to be allowed admission down there. They aren’t comparing your breasts to anything except for HOLY FUCK LOOK AT THESE GORGEOUS BREASTS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME IM NOT WORTHY and then your face YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE they’re going to see that face in their mind as they drift off to sleep and they’re going to smile because it’s lovely, because it’s you.
And you are so much more that the sum of your parts.
(The Eternally Obvious, Rene Magritte ,1930)
It’s totally normal to get that little tummy pooch so don’t get mad at it. When you eat food it’s got to go somewhere while you digest it so you get that little bloat, thats A-OK, no worries there. Whatever size you are you’ve got a LOT of important stuff ticking along in there - like save your life, keep you functioning, the human race would be lost without it stuff - so don’t get mad at your body for making sure it’s well protected. Your body is just looking out for you. Give that pooch a little love today.
(Hans Purrmann (1880-1966), Nude (c.1910-30), oil on canvas, 73 x 93 cm.)
If you struggle sometimes with seeing “pretty people” all around you and feel you don’t match up then just take a moment and remember that all of us are big squirmy bags of slimy tubing held together with skin and the idea that some skinbagslimetubes are in any way superior to others is quite frankly nonsense.
I love my slimey tubes and so should you.
(Anatomia, Mark Ryden)
You are so beautiful and so magnificent. You are so comfortable in your skin. You paint your toenails and leave your armpits natural, and damn anyone who thinks you have to pick a side. Your hair is dark and thick and lustrous and gorgeous and your thighs should be worshipped. Your tummy rolls are delectable and your cheeks are flushed and your skin is golden and you are BEAUTIFUL just as you are.
