Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings.“
― Ursula K. Le Guin
I think the most hilarious place to put Post-Canon Sokka would have been the university at Ba Sing Se. I think he would have made a great unhinged professor. Also, in true Sokka fashion, he should have completely dodged fame. Momo is more famous than he is.
He wants to demonstrate to the class how this thing called electricity works, so he's going to be bringing in a Firebender, so everybody be cool, we're all friends here... and in walks Princess Azula of the Fire Nation. One-time conqueror of the city. One of the students is currently writing an essay on how her brief rule of the city affected fruit trade. She says she considers the class to still be her subjects as she doesn't acknowledge any pretenders to any of her thrones, but for now you're exempted from bowing and "Your Highness" will do. It's a really interesting lecture.
"Okay, guys - hey, listen up, everyone - I won't be here next week, me and Aang are going to-" yeah right, sure, Professor Sokka knows the Avatar. Except, of course, the Avatar walks in sheepishly and says that Appa might have gotten into Sokka's hybrid crops, and then you all have to sit there and watch your professor chase the Avatar around with a sword.
One postgrad student is specializing in Water Tribe Cultures. She's currently studying the massive cultural shift that happened in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of the war - oh, and Professor, I absolutely know that you're from the Southern Water Tribe, but it's just that the shift started with Master Katara, and of course I don't think that every person from the South knows one another haha it's just that I need to ask her some questions and I thought maybe you could help me write a letter or write a letter of introduction or...
Sokka looks at her blankly and goes "yeah, she's my sister. KATARA!" which is followed by a faint answering "fuck you!" from Somewhere and to the horror/elation of our postgrad, Master Katara bursts in and is promptly beaned in the head with a rock by Professor Sokka. Her brother. her hero and her professor are siblings and currently brawling on the floor.

i can't get over this. this is fucking killing me
I still haven’t seen the leaked film.
but seeing how Tim Hendrick was the one ATLA show writer Bryke brought back to pen a script out of what I was assuming to be a very “Aang-is still our-Tragic Golden Boy-with-Plot-Armor-and-OF CouRSE KaTAaNG” outline of an idea… was a bit of a red flag to me.
… particularly with how Katara’s character would be handled.
See, Tim Hendrick wrote various episodes in ATLA where Katara’s trauma/emotional labor as a character got “brushed aside” to instead elevate Aang’s narrative, disregarding any consequences to his behavior/actions.
Tim Hendrick wrote “the Deserter” (in which Katara gets severely burned by Aang’s reckless behavior but guess what she tapped into her Healing power so it’s ok, and instead she can comfort Aang from this trauma.)
He also wrote “the Swamp” (in which Katara sees a vision of her dead mother, emotionally breaks down about it, but brushes it aside to instead focus on Aang’s vision in the swamp).
He also wrote “the Desert” (in which Katara needs to tap into her calm collected maturity to lead the Gaang out of the desert and brushes aside Aang’s tantrums bc she knows he’s grieving about losing Appa… and even after all of that… still has to get Aang out of the dangerous avatar state).
He also wrote “the Puppetmaster” (in which Katara not only experiences severe deceit and betrayal of trust from someone in her own culture, but reluctantly becomes a bloodbender only after Aang’s life gets threatened, again. And then she internalizes this trauma for the rest of the series 😢.)
And he was one of the writers for “Ember Island Players” (in which Aang gets so upset about his portrayal in a play and proclaims that he’d be in the avatar state if it weren’t for his chakra blocking it… then unnecessarily pushes the topic of a relationship onto Katara in the most inpportuned time, she gets uncomfortable and Aang still persists to the point of forcing a kiss onto her… and doesn’t apologize.)
so…. yeah.

Finished Katara today as well, so she can join Toph :D Next is Zuko!

you have to love trans women more than you hate transmisogynists. and i mean real trans women, not this abstract symbol you've created just to defend. the real flesh and blood human beings who are messy and complex and imperfect. you have to love them even when they fall outside of your preconceived idea of what a "good" trans woman must be, when they're doing femininity "wrong" or "not enough", when they understand themselves in terms you find unintuitive, when they're rubbing against your understanding of what a woman should and can be. you have to support the trans women in your life and you have to be kind to the ones you meet and you have to respect the ones on the internet. otherwise you're not helping, you're just using them to play hero.
