HE’S NOT LIKE HIS HALF-BROTHER who would wear himself down trying to attain the unattainable: forgiveness is an abstract concept and seungjae figures it’s one of the few things in life not worth fighting for. those who love you will forgive without you having to ask them for it; he’s seen that example in his parents multiple times. he doesn’t remember what he has allowed to drip from his mouth before but he hasn’t always been nice, hasn’t always been the child willing to go back home. of course, years have passed between the now and the once upon a time, but he’ll be the first one to admit that he’s done some unforgivable things too. minhee should know this best. she has experienced the same before.

so seungjae isn’t going to stand here much longer and play this game. “don’t be coy,” murmurs he who can seemingly never really avert his gaze, head slightly cocked to the side, eyes narrowed. the dusty-hued female tests him like she always does and normally, he likes to indulge himself because she offers a certain type of entertainment that he can’t get anywhere else for free, but he thinks the feeling might be mutual and he’s about done standing in the cold and waiting for some kind of sign that she’s doing this because she has to, not because she enjoys doing this. he feels a wave of disgust hitting him; seungjae feels his jaw tightening when the bile threatens to make its way up his throat but he swallows down any impending feeling of hatred.

forgiving seems too akin to forgetting and he isn’t inclined to offer her either. it makes him want to hurt her, oddly enough, even though he can’t quite fathom why his emotions are spiraling out of control the way they do. minhee doesn’t really mean all that much to him. he stays silent, thinks for a moment or two. no, it’s not her. he just can’t bear the thought of losing whatever game they’re playing. whether or not this is meant to have a winner, he doesn’t quite know but he’ll damn sure find out. “i might’ve. when i last talked to her, i didn’t have to drag her from the shit she calls work. but hey, what do i know? i’m just the guy who steals her time.”

he’s egging her on for no particular reason. it’s true that he thinks her work is something similar to selling yourself on the streets, though you won’t find him voicing that thought for the sake of - him. you guessed it right, seungjae’s far too arrogant to talk to someone like that. minhee’s smart, educated, she could be someone who can leave this town and make something out of herself. stuck in the worst parts in seoul, she’s like a bird whose wings have been trimmed. she doesn’t know he’s the one holding the pair of scissors in his hands, but that’s okay. he has no intentions of making that public either. his to keep and hers to accept. that’s the way it is.

“i don’t have to spell the obvious out for you, do i?” sometimes, he wonders why she’s doing this. old men touching her and whispering things he can’t even fathom seems like the cheapest way to buy yourself out of a problem or two but if she thinks this is a permanent solution, she’s got another thing coming. it makes him wonder about minhee’s motives, the things she doesn’t wish to share. about the people who stroll into this building to pay for her time when he so nonchalantly manages to gather some of that himself without asking for permission or losing his well-deserved pay to some snobs who think too highly of themselves while having nothing. is she one of them, too? the thought is intriguing. the truth would be enticing to figure out if he didn’t know it any better.

slowly, he loosens his grip before completely retracting his arm. he doesn’t fear her threat but he realizes the error in his ways: respecting minhee is a necessary thing if he wants to keep this conversation going and whatever relationship they have, alive. to treat her like dirt is wrong; his mother taught him that. maybe he doesn’t see it just yet, but as the years will pass by, he will come to understand what the love of his family means and how much he differs from his half-brother in that aspect. how much luckier he has been in that aspect.

“i didn’t mean to.” he knows he never has control over the physical brutality he so easily inflicts upon others. “you should go back. i’m not keeping you from work any longer.”

seungjae’s intent was always wretchedly beautiful, to minhee at least. there’s something wrong with that. there’s something wrong with enjoying the fact that all her control can turn upside down with the right slip of her tongue. not even just the physicality of it but internally. there’s something wrong with knowing that seungjae’s control is sometimes limited to primal instinct and the very kind of person she despises she enjoys in him. something masochistic in how the very kind of animal she tames she lets loose. 

he’s not on a chain, not by any means. she’s met men like him as well, wild, driven to basic instinct. it’s maybe not a man thing more as it’s a person thing. a human thing. sometimes minhee thinks about it, about the intricacies of his anger, the base of his drive to be - to get physical. then she just pushes it aside because she doesn’t want to dig, doesn’t want to get to know any deeper. scratching the surfaces of curiosities is fine. they’ve both done things that could warrant someone calling them close but that kind of title makes her vulnerable and if he won’t open to it then neither will she.

they are steel to one another and both trying to crack the other open. they could both break in any way they wished, minhee down the middle, from the seams, from the actions. seungjae from the inside out, from the words, from the games. they could break, strong as they are. they’ve tried the breaking thing, tried the pounding at pressure points until they were sure they’d hit a center. they’d tried. it just became comfortable, enjoyable.

and she knows there’s something terribly wrong with that as well. but for as long as she enjoys it she won’t question it.

when his fingers touch her wrist she’s too used to it, too in love with the adrenaline that sparks in her chest. she can hide it in her eyes, slouch against the feeling but blood boils and fire responds to a lighter instinctively. it leans towards it as if it can smell the outcome and she’s no different. she’s a slave to that, no matter how long it’s been since she engaged in it, fueled it and responded to it, she’s a slave. a slave that when his hand leaves and she’s supposed to let her chest fall and her alert die down she doesn’t feel relief. she feels regret. not at her words, or his but at the resolution, at the step down. it’s no longer a stand-off and it’s not normal for them. it shouldn’t be.

minhee has to do something with her hands first, has to get them moving to get the feeling back. the grip wasn’t too hard, nothing she’s not used to but it’s still familiar and she wants to wipe it off, wants to burn and numb the insides and never feel it again. burn his imprint. all she does is run it through her hair frustration becoming apparent on her face.

“you’re so full of shit.”

she doesn’t say it with an intention to bring back anything. she doesn’t say it to draw anything out of him, she says it because it’s the first thing on her mind, the only thing that can really cope with everything in her head. heightened desire and bristling blood under the surface.

“you come here, call me out of work, demand something without even stating what it is and then tell me to go back. you’ve got some nerve ordering me around like that.” everything minhee does she does of her own accord and seungjae knows that better than anyone else. he knows that if she wanted to go she could, if she wanted to walk away or simply not show up she could. he knows there’s no invisible hold that binds her to him, forces her to bend to his presence. minhee knows too. so she tries not to question what she’s still doing out here and doesn’t try to think that the answer is plain and simple.

there’s a difference between seungjae and the fools inside the building. it’s nothing so obvious as status or wealth. nothing so apparent as body size and facial hair. it’s association, allowance. it’s a power thing. in there she’s always on top and no one knows, no one suspects. she makes puppets of fools wearing crowns. seungjae isn’t that easy. power shifts, dashes between them with every word and every action. never one completely on top or completely on bottom, just alternating between head positions. it never sits and it never settles. that could be the reason she’s so drawn to the game they play because she’s never comfortable in her position.

maybe she’s bored.

maybe it was him backing down. maybe it’s the power shift, the subtle and almost impossible regret. seungjae doesn’t wear things like that often, she was probably mistaken anyway. probably reading into a reason to let him go. but he’s let go, he’s not softened but he’s suddenly not so rough. for a minute minhee’s intrigued and that’s all. the curiosity alone is what keeps her in her spot and she’s going to tell herself that until the night is out.

“just tell me what you came here for.”

“doesn’t it hurt?”

smoke smoke smoke and more smoke. enough smoke to where the question takes a while to settle, not enough to where she can’t hear it but it doesn’t piece together as quickly. she’s grateful for that. 

he says it when he should say that. or at least minhee thinks so. he says it and he should mean that because it is everything, it is all of it, it is him prying and opening. she closes back, hands gripping the sheets. she’s paused in the moment, not because of the pain but because of a breath. they both needed it really. she needed to breathe in something else and he, he just needed to breathe. she wonders if he’s ever looked this weak. thinks she probably needs another smoke.

‘does what hurt?’

she does reach for another smoke now, doesn’t feel an ache, a burn but not an ache and she decides one more drag into her lungs and she won’t feel anything. it’s a promise minhee looks forward to, one that has her smiling around the joint when he lights it. there’s a frown though she thinks she’s really too sober to be this aware, of features, thoughts. too too aware. too connected.

“all of it?”

she glances down, his questioning peering up at her from the bottom of her joint. she can’t even scowl, can’t bring herself to really. she tightens, her chest around her heart, her hands in the sheets and her resolve to wipe the look off his face. the questions too. the questions and the burn. all of it.

the noise she gets is all she needs to wipe it all away. and she has to. minhee can only pretend to be numb and when she is numb she can only be it for a period of time. it all wears and her body wears thin. some day it will wear out but right now she uses it to wear him out and snatch the questions from his head. 

because of course it hurts. 

of course it fucking hurts.

she doesn’t need to heal though, she just needs the smoke. smoke smoke and more smoke.

there are things minhee should be doing right now smiling being one of them. smiling and wiping the counter which is another one. she’s smiling, not because it’s a permanent fixture on her face but because she’s suddenly excited. minhee can’t remember the last time she’d felt giddy, the last time her stomach’s bubbled with anticipation like a child. that was built for people with expectations, people with candy dreams and playfulness. minhee's sense of playfulness was a little warped but not in the cute way or the dreamy way, in a broken way. that’s just the way things were with her. but now as she leans across the counter, phone in her palms and attention stolen she’s got a childish tumble in her stomach and her tongue sticks out for effect. she types away.

“you’re going to break him hun.” minhee wouldn’t mind if she did.

ahyeon is all fire and no forgiveness. minhee is all talk and all bite. they’re both all consuming one carefully destroying and one recklessly. they don’t match, they shouldn’t complement but when they get together the blaze is too beautiful to ignore. ahyeon burns and sears and minhee can’t help but smile. 

she plays at boredom if only briefly. what was supposed to be a good night has taken a turn for the better. they simply cannot have a normal night, they cannot get along without something being trampled under their path. they don’t live like queens because they live to destroy kings. it’s a necessity and when ahyeon’s hands curled in anticipation minhee couldn’t fight the desire curling in her chest. she admits she doesn’t know playfulness unless it’s malicious and her expressions says such. black lips curled in a smile, black boots posted up against concrete, and black nails crawling across skin, minhee carves a promise into his skin.

he trembles. she smiles.

“he didn’t mean to snap at you,” he did. he’s spotted minhee. it’s always late in the night when men got a little too bold, a little too confident. it’s under cover of moonlight that minhee is most deadly as they come to find out. a stroll down hongdae, her arm around the younger and her boots digging into the ground, minhee radiates freedom and he has a problem with it. he associates money with ownership and yanks them apart under the pretense of control and the haze of alcohol. minhee had been calm, ahyeon not so much.

ahyeon’s a true testament to her reputation, always lit and never dormant. she’s got his arm twisted behind him and minhee’s hand pressing his cheek into the wall. crushing, snuffing, under the cover of moonlight they come alive.

“awh, he’s a customer, what do we do?” she wants ahyeon to choose. she wants ahyeon to burn anything in her path, no restraint and no hesitation. minhee’s forgotten that stage and she misses it.

Hanhae only cackled loudly at her words.”Stop! This isn’t a Starbucks roleplay keep me out of your weird shit.” The bassist laughed softly as he attempted to burrow deeper under his covers. “Yes it also looks like you have ‘big loser’ tattooed there as well.” He teased with a wide grin. The blanket was now a shield from her potential attacks. Something was wrong with him, the desire to need people close to him but never let it get any further was probably some underlying emotional issue but he could ignore that for now. He patiently waits before she turned and he smiled so wide that she’d actually gotten him the coffee. Not that he’s surprised she is a gem and always does this for him. “You are the sweetest, cutest person I know.” Hanhae told her with a nod as he reached out for the mug. “Get in bed, there’s no plans of leaving today.”

“You’re the one talking about Starbucks roleplay and I’m the one into weird shit.” Red lips pursed, she knows such confusion on her features makes her look younger, more innocent. It’s not that Minhee willingly tries to hide this aspect of her it’s just that she’d forgotten it could exist. She could soak up the words he said with a smile and a flip of her hair, arrogance something that she knows all too well. It didn’t sit right though and only because minhee’s not used to hearing words like that associated with her. It’s probably why he seeks shelter under the covers after he speaks. Even the men who would have her on her arm knew that there was nothing sweet about her, outwardly maybe but that was the extent of it. Sweet lips, sweet words, sweet face and all conditional. Hanhae butters her up and she almost accepts it, almost bathes in it like it’ll actually become a part of her. “You said we’d have a listening session, you’re a liar.” She does sit down though, folding one leg over the other and finally taking a sip of her coffee. Sweet. Everything’s sweet for the moment. “Somebody slept well.”

“what are your new year's resolutions?”

he doesn’t hope for anything when he asks. he’s always trying to pick apart her mind like a treasure chest. like he’s entitled and like he’s the only one allowed to see what’s underneath. minhee satisfies to a certain extent. she satisfies enough for a thought, enough to plant ownership and slide in. she satisfies to win and she’s not ashamed in the least.she’s not submissive she’s sneaky. smooth.

right now? right now minhee’s a little tipsy. right now she tastes a bitter burn but she doesn’t taste an answer. she doesn’t fashion a plan for his words and instead she slips into the comfort of the drink and the silence of seoul nights.

she doesn’t have an answer because she doesn’t have any wishes. she wanted 2017 to be raw and that’s all. she didn’t want too much sugar and not enough salt. she didn’t want too much salt and not enough sugar. she didn’t want a balance either. she didn’t know what she wanted and maybe that was a problem. maybe stringing through life without knowing and starting the year without knowing was the problem. 

she started 2017 with a drink in her hand and on the edge of a balcony, hands around her torso and cologne breathed into her skin. nothing’s changed.

it’s not comfort exactly. or maybe she tells herself that because it makes it easier to breathe it all in.

maybe it’s the cloud she’s welcoming to her body that makes passing up on an answer so much more tempting. maybe it’s because she’s so used to having an answer that not having one makes it feel like this isn’t her comfort. it feels like she’s changing and she has some untapped resolution in her heart that he’s drawing out.

“I-----”

“Don’t have any?” It’s a question, it’s an assumption. it shouldn’t bother her. he picks and picks but never strikes gold. he picks and picks and comes up empty-handed. she frowns around her drink, feeling the bitter more than the buzz. feeling bare. feeling that maybe the familiarity is too much, that’ maybe he’s too close and he’s too used to being close. feeling open, chilled and permeable. that could just be her pores responding to the cold. she tries not to stiffen and settles for finishing the rest of the drink before the words can slip out and her body slips back against his.

“Yeah.”

“tell me about soft christmases.” 

for a minute he’s silent. it’s not uncomfortable or anything, he’s known her to be a woman with rivers in her mouth and a dam for teeth. he knows and he just huddles closer until his lips are where she can hear them. where she can know him.

she’s not looking at anything in particular. the sheets feel rough against her body, familiar but rough. minhee tries to shave off everything around her so she doesn’t seem so soft. tries to open her body to the harshness of the world and only soften it in company. yet even now in the warmth of the sheets and the warmth of the body she’s colder than ever. he’s warm he’s always been a little warm especially after nights like this but she can’t find herself to feel it. she seeks it though because she thinks it’ll make it better. she scoots back into him, nakedness and all and lets the arms hold her steady.

she’s not listening for anything either. long ago she’d stop expecting beautifully woven words for her own satisfaction. she hears them everyday anyway, she hears poetry and lies, one in the same and trickery to the core. she hears truth in simplicity and she thinks she might miss that more. she’s now sure what she’s asking for exactly but she knows expecting nothing makes everything easier. whatever he gives her and whatever he indulges in she knows she’ll receive. not because she has not but because it’s what she’ll get, demands and all.

it’s the night after christmas, more specifically a few hours into the 26th. the magic has faded. the candles are blown out. opened presents lay scattered around the living room like her heart, clothes around the room like her resolve. holiday warmth flees her in favor of december cold and she’s okay with that. she’s never been much of a christmas girl.

it shows. it’s the reason for the question but he knows better than to ask. he just laughs, a deep laugh that he’s known for.

“soft christmases? like skin soft or children soft?” for all that minhee expects or would expect he does a good job of meeting it sometimes. it makes her eyes close in imagination and she’s the last person to ever settle herself in her thoughts around anyone but here she is.

minhee thinks of skin soft first. she thinks of it because she hears it all the time whether it’s in a murmur or a caress, in a difference or an order. ‘your skin is so smooth’, ‘i love touching you’, and ‘make sure your skin is never anything but soft’. minhee’s heard it all and memorized it all. skin soft christmases are probably a little like hers. they have a little more love in them though. they have the movie definition of intimacy. skin soft christmases like people in love and mistletoe kisses. skin-soft christmases like a girl’s consent and love under candlelight and sheets. she had the sheets, the candlelight, and the consent. what was missing? skin-soft like she’s won. skin soft like she’s fulfilled. she knows what skin soft christmases are. well she knows what they should be. she wants to laugh because of course he thinks he knows what skin soft christmases are. 

“children soft.”

she imagines this immediately. she’s imagined it since she was a child. children christmases are dreamed up christmases, movie christmases with bright colors and lights and laughter. children christmases have chocolate stains and crumbs on mouths. children christmases have dirty hands and filled kitchens or even filled souls. minhee often bathes in a cliche when she has nothing else and tries to wrap it around herself until it fits. she’s a starving model but she doesn’t claw herself out to make it fit, she just pretends it doesn’t hurt when it doesn’t. minhee doesn’t know much about children christmases because her childhood was ripped the moment it could blossom. she doesn’t blame anyone she just basks in what could have been much like someone who grabs a fruit and looks back at the cake knowing how sweet it would taste. she wonders how it would taste so she asks for it.

“mmmmm when I was little we had a lot of places to decorate in the house? the staircase, the tree, the windowsills, the backyard and the front yard, all the ledges.” “okay okay I get it you had money.” he pinches her side at that but she’s laughing and humming and he continues. “so we’d have to spend a day per section of the house? and when I was really small, I tried to get the lights around the staircase? I slid all the way to the bottom and instead of hitting my head I just had a really sore bottom for days.”

“mhmmm and?”

“for the most part my parents didn’t cook? But I would sneak into the kitchen after lessons to either help or get tastes of whatever was for dinner.” “you had lessons during the holidays?” “you didn’t?” minhee moves to shove him off her at that but he just holds tighter and continues. “So my Christmas is lots and lots of meat and lots of sweet potatoes. Tons. My dad was a fan of turkey but I preferred pork. Lots of sweet potatoes too, they’d fry the skins they didn’t use for me and I’d snack on them.” “mmmmm, I want sweet potatoes.” at that he ghosts a kiss over her ear. she takes it as a yes, a later but a yes nonetheless.

minhee can picture a christmas that fits him. it’s a little different from others she assumes but probably has many in common with others. there’s nothing wrong with that. it’s a christmas and it’s all his and rings peacefully in his mind. she feels a smile against her neck and doesn’t think of the envy in her throat. 

“you’re heavy and still sweaty move.” “you’re so cranky, it’s the day after christmas.” it’s a bit of a whine and it makes her entire body curl away. there’s no disgust or anything she just shies away from the opening his words make in her heart.

“I guess I haven’t had that many soft christmases.” by now her legs are on either side of his waist. by now she’s washed all traces of regret from her eyes, conversation still fresh in her mind. by now minhee has detached all longing from her and focuses on the natural and the primal. he smiles up like he knows what’s coming. she smiles down like she doesn’t.

“guess not.”

she asks of soft christmases because to her they’re always the same. rough. coarse against her throat, selfish on her skin. minhee knows nothing about them and she wants to. right now she settles for an imitation and lets the heat consume her.
