I see a lot of posts talking about how heartbreaking it is that Colonel like.. clearly cared about us as an individual n whatnot… but it’s alway prefaced with saying that up until we are shot he is supposedly hostile or uncaring towards us..

While he is seemingly a bit hostile at the very beginning, more than anything I think he just had his guard up. Considering all things, I would not be surprised if he just… isn’t great at trusting and letting people in. Especially in such a delicate situation.

But he pretty quickly warms up to us. He takes us off to do some fun stuff, is sharing some of his favorite places with us (even though it may be to hide from Damien, he still took us along anyway…) And, something that I have always found to be a pretty important detail; when everyone else is making jabs at us and blatantly making fun of us, he turns and gently declines to join in, seeming genuinely confused as to why he should ever be rude to us…

So like… yeah, he’s always been a little unhinged and all that, but it hurts me to see people brushing him off as being abrasive and unkind to us up until the moment he made that mistake, when that’s just not true… he cared quite some time before he pulled that trigger.

What’s worse is that he hadn’t meant to pull the trigger. Like you said, he has such a hard time trusting people- we were one of the few he quickly warmed up to. Imagine that yourself- shooting a friend that you’ve come to trust and care deeply about in a short amount of time; especially shortly after the possible deaths of three of your best friends. And, not only that, but this said friend stayed with you, tried to calm you down.

And then you turn around and shoot them.

I’ve talked about this a little bit before, but I’m still so amazed at how viscerally Iron Lung captures the lived experience of paranoia/depression/panic (and probably many other mental illnesses as well).

The way he can’t see out and other people can’t see in but they are still giving him useless instructions.

There is so little color in the movie. Everything is distorted by fear and exhaustion and darkness and solely focusing on making it to the next moment. We are almost always looking at a very narrow focus in the frame. Never a wide angle. Never a whole picture. Always an acute and magnified version of the terror he’s experiencing.

The way every choice is already made before the film begins, but he’s fighting tooth and nail every inch of the way anyway.

Sometimes the hallucinations win. Sometimes he can’t tell the difference between reality and his own mind. It’s getting hotter. And darker. And smaller. And he still has to keep going.

Every time he makes progress he’s thrown flat on his ass.

There’s nothing to run from. There’s no bad guy jumpscare. You can’t point at any one thing and say “this is what’s happening” because it’s so much going on all of the time and most of it is probably not even real.

People blame him for his situation, but also are begging him to pull himself out of it.

He starts making choices that could kill him and he doesn’t care. He’s arguably trying to kill himself and even that is not working.

He goes so far down he meets God but finds God to be a lie anyway, and turns himself back to humanity for a moment.

He can’t save himself. He can’t save anyone. He’s trapped in an irradiated tube of death but he’s going to fight with all he’s got anyway.
