The New York flow is probably my preferred vocal style, but #DrDre’s music captivated me. I wore out my friend’s tape, replaced it for him and bought my own copy on CD. Y’all know like 80% of the album. I don’t need to get into it. This album made me sit up and understand that rap and hip hop could be every bit as musical and melodic as what I was listening to already. I went off to college knowing nothing about rap, hip hop, or black culture. Living in a dormitory was the best and worst thing for me. I was introduced to lifestyles and music out of my zone, and I loved all of it. Didn’t go to class but that’s another story. Anyway, our cafeteria had TVs that played music videos and “Dangerous” was huge at the time. I fell in love with it, with Busta, and it made me want to go back and start learning about the genre, which I did. This album opened my eyes to hip hop, black culture, and it made me want to get out of my comfort zone even more! I was the odd kid out in elementary school. I had buck teeth and got acne before anybody else did. Yay. I went to a new school in the sixth grade, and Mark (@scrimshaw) became my buddy. He turned me on to lots of great music. But our main love that year was TMBG and this album. I learned every note of every instrument and every lyric. I memorized everything about this album, and Mark and I would stand around during recess after lunch and sing these songs. I mean, we’d harmonize, everything. Salad days, etc. What a time. Anyway, this album let me find a friend in a new school, and it let me learn that music could be really quirky and still great.
