CHILDISH GAMBINO’s DIE WITH YOU GUAVA ISLAND | dir. Hiro Murai
Guava Island (Hiro Murai, 2019).
Guava Island - Hiro Murai (2019)
Rihanna as Kofi Novia and Donald Glover as Deni Maroon in Guava Island (2019). ♫ Do love me, do love me, do ♫
3.23.20
The life of Childish Gambino is over. I cried listening to his final album knowing it was the end. Was I ready? I’ve waited for years for this album. I was blessed enough to see his final tour, knowing it would be the last time I would see Childish Gambino perform on stage. I was present, I was proud, I was honored. But now, with the release of 3.15.20 it is all bittersweet. He will never perform these songs live.
Maybe I have put him on a peddle stool, but he surely deserves all the praise he gets. It started as laughing at his character on Community to finding out he’s a rapper. I downloaded all his mixtapes, wondering why he wasn’t signed to a label. I followed his acting career, wondering why it took everyone so long to realize his genius. I saw him perform live the day after Bonfire was released. It was a long time before people in the club were rapping his songs along with me.
Because the internet CG blew up. Since then, he’s done so many things across many platforms and mediums. I’ve been a Donald Glover/Childish Gambino fan since 2009, and I am so proud of him a decade later. A part of me hopes it’s all a lie and this isn’t the end of CG. A part of me thinks he’ll comes out with music under a different alias. Another part of me knows Donald likes endings. But no matter what name he puts it under, I look forward to whatever he decides to share with the world next. I hope he’s proud of his work. Thank you, Childish Gambino.
Movement doesn’t flow quite like it does when I’m alone ✨🌬
