Anyone else notice how Susie started hiding her bangs after she saw Toriel drunk?

It seems like it was being implied she actually wanted to stay over at first.

But when Toriel begins acting drunk, giggling uncontrollably with a flushed face, acting rather scatterbrained...

This implies Susie might have negative associations with drunk parental figures.

Toriel even seems to realize that there's something that's bothering Susie, but it only occurs to her after Susie has left: the damage has been done by then.

Basically the Bombur Mirkwood Arc in a Nutshell (TW: SUICIDE REFERENCE)

Bro like nobody seems to grasp how dire Bombur's physical and mental state is at this part in the chapter. You'd be amazed how many people genuinely see Bombur as being dramatic or "childish" even though he so clearly telegraphs how much pain he is and the narrative clearly explains that he's malnourished. EVERYONE sides with Thorin, the abuser, and unspecificied company members who went along with that abuse. I don't know why. Maybe the old language is hard to understand so they don't quite grasp it? But at any rate oh Bombur my shayla you deserved so much better. They even blame BOMBUR for what happened even though it's clearly stated the deer knocked him in.

The abuse is literally internalized by the fanbase at this point. I saw one otherwise decent looking fan wiki unironically describe the mirkwood incident as "Bombur clumsily fell into the water" even though it's not true. The Peter Jackson adaptation even portrays it in that way.

Heck, Bombur is dead silent throughout the entire trilogy, and Thorin's wish when he was ranting and verbally abusing Bombur was that Bombur "be silent" if he couldn't say anymore about his dreams.

To the people who really think Bombur is the "bad guy" in this arc: Y'all really saw a guy getting severely abused, crying out in pain and wailing for mercy, and you internalized the ABUSERS' perspective.

Yikes.

Please. Uninternalize Bombur abuse. I SINCERELY feel like Bombur was intended to be the victim here.

As someone who has trauma with being yelled at Thorin's verbal destruction on Bombur was devastating.

And he didn't even raise his voice. Just reading the Hobbit as a child and feeling this horrible feeling, worse then fear, worse than dread.

Bombur deserved better.

Lie #2: THROR HAD GOLD FEVER.

THIS IS A LIE. ANYTHING NEGATIVE THE PETER JACKSON FILMS IMPLIES ABOUT THROR IS A LIE. 

THROR WAS BARELY A CHARACTER IN THE HOBBIT, AND FROM WHAT WE HERE HE WAS A GOOD, RESPONSIBLE KING WHO HAD A GOOD BUSTLING ECONOMY WITH DALE, PLANNED A SECRET ESCAPE ROOM IF ANYONE WENT WRONG. THROR IS THE ENTIRE REASON THAT COOL MAP DEALIO EXISTS. HE DID NOT ATTRACT THE DRAGON BECAUSE HE DIDN’T THINK AHEAD, IT WAS HIS THINKING AHEAD THAT MADE THE RECLAMATION OF EREBOR POSSIBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE. STOP BLAMING THORIN’S MISTAKES ON HIS GRANDDAD 

Lie #3: The Arkenstone Corrupted Thorin The Way The Ring Corrupted Bilbo

THIS IS A LIE.

The arkenstone has no magical properties. It is just a very large, very beautiful stone that happens to be an heirloom of Thror.

So then what happened to Thorin at Erebor in the book? Simple, he was always a terrible person who was given a lot of power and absolute power corrupts absolutely. There was no Fake Gold Obsession Disease, just a really big jerk given too much power and responsibility.

Tolkien explaining his dwarves: First, there’s Thorin, he’s the leader of the company. He has two nephews; Fili and Kili. Then, there’s Bombur: he’s fat. He has a brother named Bofur and a cousin named Bifur, who aren’t fat like him though. There’s another set of brothers named Oín and Gloín. I don’t remember anything else about them except that they’re not fat, not like Bombur. Dwalin and Balin! The other brothers! They’re fine dwarves and not fat like Bombur. There’s like three left that I’m missing but Bombur’s obese weight is throwing me off. He would hate me speaking of him like this but he’s fat so who cares? That fatty, fat, fat fatwad like Bombur is too fat to even hear anything but his enormous size-

Bombur was fat but capable, strong, and smart.

He fell into a river, the dwarves were horrendously impatient and ill-tempered towards the dehydrated dwarf who had been asleep for a week and thus wouldn’t be able to eat or drink properly. He became suicidal and the rest of the book was a recovery arc as painstakingly slow and incomplete as you would expect from reality.

By calling Bombur fat frequently Tolkien was able to hide this from the censors.

✨✨✨Stream announcement! ✨✨✨

This dumb little blog somehow has 400 followers! I don't think I can express to you guys how much fun its been to get to rant/interact/create with you guys these past few months! At risk of drawing this out, I thought it might be fun to celebrate by doing a little hangout stream this weekend and possibly for the next few weekends. A few people have expressed interest in playing Sierra's The Hobbit from 2003 but don't have the time/means to do so. I thought it would be fun to stream the game so that anyone who wants to can see it, and also a fun way to interact with you guys, talk Tolkien and maybe get to know some of you better!

The first stream will be this Saturday, 9/18 at 4PM Eastern Standard Time until 5:30 (or later). This is weird because objectively speaking I love Bombur’s audacity, but I recognize that it doesn’t always serve him well. And I hated when he lost it after the traumatic Mirkwood incident. I love that

this is not gonna be a popular post and in fact ill probably get unfollowed for it, but im just thinking about how bilbo, this tiny little hobbit with no battle experience, decided to go back on his own into the goblin tunnels to look for the dwarves, but how gandalf was standing around trying to convince all thirteen of the dwarves to do the same for him because they didnt think he was worth it :/

i was right abt people unfollowing me for this which i think is kinda funny tbh because im just pointing out what literally happened in the book. but to be clear i love the company (thorin excluded) and id love for them to all be close friends and i think they definitely do form a really strong bond by the end of the book that lasts lifetimes. this was just. a pretty shitty thing for them to do and it also goes against the ever popular "the dwarves are all really protective of bilbo all the time" narrative
