when Sharon Olds said "If I pass a mirror, I turn away, I do not want to look at her, and she does not want to be seen."
i think a society failed its youth if they feel old (derogatory) at 20
perhaps a society has failed if it’s people ever feel old (derogatory) rather than old (complimentary)
YOU. YOU GET IT the issue of tying youth to desirability, whether sexually or culturally, doesn’t go away when you expand what youth is youth worship isn’t just beauty standards, it’s saying that only the young have ideas or creations that have worth. that age means withering and decay. don’t expand what youth is, dismantle the idea that aging degrades your value as a human being

I personally see the hijab ban in the EU as liberating. Everyone will be equal from now on, and women will be liberated from oppressive religious standards. Thoughts?
you can’t “liberate” those who are already free
just say you don’t like women wearing the hijab and get out of my asks
also, if your “equality” doesn’t see a hijabi as an equal unless she discards her traditions and culture to conform to the western ideal of the ‘good muslim’ then it’s not actually equality it’s just orientalism and islamophobia
Forcing women to dress a certain way is never liberating.
A woman choosing to wear or not wear something without interference is liberty.
Having a free choice is the point.
Hijab ban will lead to two things: Women who want to wear one are not gonna be allowed to wear one anymore, which is the opposite of freedom. Women who are not allowed to go out without one by an abuser will not be allowed to go out at all anymore.
This is not how to stop oppression.
precisely
women who have been coerced into wearing it (which is wrong, we can all agree on that), could be taken out of the public sphere almost entirely, which will limit her access to education, healthcare, and necessary government services - as well as curb any chances of future financial independence
on the opposite side, women who have been forced by the government to remove their hijab they freely chose to wear now have to choose between removing themselves from the public sphere or continuing to wear it and facing legal repercussion, fines, and even jail time. the other option is that they remove it when they do not wish to do so, which strips a woman of her choice and ability to privatize the parts of her body she does not wish to share with the world and forces her to erase her cultural and religious traditions in order to be deemed societally acceptable by a country that spent hundreds of years colonizing muslim countries and violently oppressing muslim women
and idk how to explain to you guys that none of these options are liberating
I’d like to know if Anon also thinks we should ban cross necklaces, rosaries, and nuns’ habits.
I’m willing to bet not.
i know that people mean well by bringing up nuns and habits but i also want to point out that the example is demeaning
this isn’t about nuns. there are less than 13k nuns total in france as of 2006, which was the most recent statistic i could find, and i’m willing to bet it’s even lower based on the rate of decline worldwide
the muslim population in france, however, numbers at 4.7 million as of 2020
this type of legislation is meant to specifically and maliciously target one group, and i promise you it isn’t the nuns
france has a very long and very violent history of oppressing muslim women through multiple means, from the government sanctioned mass rape campaigns of veiled women in north africa in colonial times to forced unveiling ceremonies to the legislation being passed today
this is the continued colonization of muslim women and their bodies, let’s be clear
“It’s an universal law– intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education. An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”
— Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (b. 11 December 1918)
so, with the miss universe contestants having arrived in occupied palestine, they are being taught how to make traditional palestinians foods, dressed in traditional palestinian thobes, and taught traditional palestinian dances
as this celebration of appropriated culture was taking place in the west bank, this was gaza:
over two million people are trapped under a constant air, sea, and land blockade, inside one of the world’s largest cages
while miss universe contestants celebrate stolen culture, the genocide is ongoing. while they danced and sang and feasted and posted under the tourist hashtag of #visit_israel, the israeli government held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the continued oppression and ethnic cleansing of the very people who’s culture is advertised and consumed as a tourist attraction
a lot of people in the notes are surprised to hear this, and a lot of media makes it out as though it’s something new. it is not.
the air, sea, and land blockade began in 2007, with restrictions beginning in the 90’s, and the land itself was invaded in the 60’s
they have sniper nests to shoot anyone who tries to leave. they don’t let people fish for food. they routinely target water treatment plants, rendering the majority of drinking water in gaza contaminated. the health infrastructure is targeted in air strikes. they bomb journalism and residential buildings. and now they have their completed wall with surveillance tech and automated missile launching systems, because i guess they haven’t grown tired of bombing, starving, and terrorizing civilians yet

A mother wrote in her diary.
It translates to, "This is the second most important day of my life. On this day, my beautiful daughter came into this world."

you have to admit there are some joys in life that can only be felt due to hardship. a common example is steaming hot showers. it takes a cold day, or a sickness, for someone to experience the joy of a hot shower. you can’t enjoy it in the heat. then there’s the joy of a fulfilling sleep, often achieved through a tiring day. and there’s the joy of a reunion, achieved through separation. and there are many more examples. sometimes difficulty carries a special range of joys and that’s something to be thankful about.

Casual cruelty has become so ingrained in a lot of people because we live in a society that is structured in a cruel way. To be quite honest you are obligated to consider the harm of your words and actions no matter your personal hardships.
the only way to restore humanity is to kill instagram altogether

Time passes faster when it is filled with emptiness.. meaningless life slips by like a train that does not stop at any station.
