Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall!
The temperature is slowing dipping, and evening is arriving earlier and earlier which means the time has come to bid farewell to Summer and greetings to Fall!
Fortunately we don’t need to say goodbye to our Summer cookbooks, and we can welcome some glorious new Fall titles onto our shelves. Below are our staff’s favorite summer cookbooks and the Fall new releases that they are most looking forward to adding to their collections.
Mira
SUMMER
I absolutely loved Anna Jones’ first book “A Modern Way to Eat”, and am thrilled with her second. Her recipes are approachable and inspiring, and I have been pulling this book off the shelves every other day to get ideas. “A Modern Way to Cook” is broken down by how long the recipes take to make, so it’s great for quick weeknight ideas.
FALL
Fuchsia Dunlop has written several excellent Chinese cookbooks, and I’m excited to delve into her newest, “Land of Fish and Rice” which explores the cuisine of the Lower Yangtze region. Plus, we are doing a dinner with her at Lionhead that should be a blast (and delicious)!
Abby
SUMMER
I’ve made about 10 things from this book this past summer. It’s all about showcasing fruit with creative combinations but letting their flavor and unique attributes shine. Also, it has inspired me to use rye flour in just about everything from now on.
FALL
I’m all about bitter flavors recently, and my go-to drink is the Ferrari cocktail so I’m quite looking forward to this Amaro book. It’ll be educational and inspirational. My bar cart is about to get much more crowded.
Amanda
SUMMER
This book is packed with knowledge on how to utilize strange vegetables and underutilized vegetable parts (e.g. fennel fronds) and the recipes are incredibly creative and well written. The crispy eggplant with pickled shallots and herbs is a must try!
FALL
Dorie is truly a recipe writing genius. I can't wait to start baking with this collection of her favorite 300 cookie recipes from an entire career filled with cookie experimentation.
Jen
SUMMER
My favorite summer book is Dried and True by Sara Dickerman. This book gave me a great excuse to pull out the dehydrator that has been sitting in my closet for many years. It’s a great way to preserve all of the wonderful summer fruit. The Sweet Vanilla Pear Slices are my favorite so far.
FALL
For fall books I’m excited about Run Fast Eat Slow,Nourishing Recipes For Athletes by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky. My husband is a huge runner and I’m training for a half marathon so I am looking for delicious and healthy meals and snacks for pre and post running.
Carrie
SUMMER
I have absolutely loved cooking from “The Nordic Kitchen” by Claus Meyer during this past summer. I took it all the way to Sweden with me in August and made a dish from it almost every night in my Stockholm flat. The recipes are an approachable introduction to Nordic cuisine and beautifully put together based on seasonal availability.
FALL
In the fall, I’m looking forward to cooking through Julia Turshen’s new book, “Small Victories”. The recipes look simple and practical - choices I’d reach for on a daily basis - with all sorts of interesting twists and variations to shake it up from time to time. Whether you’re a novice or seasoned cook, I think you’ll make room for this book on your shelf and find yourself as smitten with Turshen’s charisma and approach as I am.

“New” Vintage books
We recently welcomed a treasure trove of vintage cookbooks to our shelves, each delightfully unique. From a Bangkok based YWCA recipe collection (the second half is all in Thai) to a cookbook by the maitre’d hotel of the Waldorf published in 1896, each book is gorgeously rife with history.
Some even have personal touches from their previous owners. Take a look below at the most charming inscription you’ll ever read.
“Helen dear as the years go by And some of these recipes you should try If the food is poor, and the end seems near Forget who gave you this book, my dear. But if the dish is fit for a King And you glow with pride and commence to sing And your guests all rave and they think you’re sweet Then gratefully think of Marguerite.”
