Hello can I interest you in the best books Iâve read in the past two years?
The Second Rebel came out last week and I just finished it, and it has joined its predecessor as literally some of the best books Iâve ever read. They are INCREDIBLE, beautifully crafted, wonderfully diverse, absolutely dope sci-fi books that everyone needs to read.
Hereâs the goodreads summary:
First Sister has no name and no voice. As a priestess of the Sisterhood, she travels the stars alongside the soldiers of Earth and Marsâthe same ones who own the rights to her body and soul. When her former captain abandons her, First Sisterâs hopes for freedom are dashed when she is forced to stay on her ship with no friends, no power, and a new captainâSaito Renâwhom she knows nothing about. She is commanded to spy on Captain Ren by the Sisterhood, but soon discovers that working for the war effort is so much harder to do when youâre falling in love.
Lito val Lucius climbed his way out of the slums to become an elite soldier of Venus, but was defeated in combat by none other than Saito Ren, resulting in the disappearance of his partner, Hiro. When Lito learns that Hiro is both alive and a traitor to the cause, he now has a shot at redemption: track down and kill his former partner. But when he discovers recordings that Hiro secretly made, Litoâs own allegiances are put to the test. Ultimately, he must decide between following orders and following his heart.
Sounds dope, right? I promise you, itâs ever better than it sounds. Here are some specific dope things to look forward to:
Did I mention diversity?? I donât mean just a little diversity; I mean SO MUCH diversity. One of the three main characters is non-binary. One is canonically bi, and the other canonically ace. In the second book, thereâs multiple new non-binary/gender fluid characters, multi poly relationships, and just generally a very cool view of gender and sexuality because itâs literal space. Also, chronic pain rep in the second book.
Some very Pacific Rim drift compatibility relationships which have me SHOOK.
Touches on topics like racism, imperialism, and medical experimentation on people who canât say no
Bechdel passes and WOMEN đđ» SUPPORTING đđ» WOMEN đđ» (more in the second book than the first, admittedly)
Beautiful and loving platonic relationships that make you wanna rip your soul out!!!
Listen thereâs more but youâve just. Youâve gotta read them for yourselves. Iâm telling you, theyâre incredible and deserve ALL the attention!!
