I was going to post my thoughts on Looking for Alaska the day after I posted the post below, but I got caught up with school, and didnât have time.  Then I started writing this post, but wasnât able to finish since I was away over the weekend. Now my homework situation has cleared up a bit, and I am back from my trip over the weekend so I can post my thoughts, finally! :)
I love looking for Alaska, as I loved all of John Greenâs books that I have read.  I donât know how many of you have read Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, but throughout the first part of the book I kept thinking of Alaska, the Colonel, and Pudgeâs relationship as being similar to the Golden Trioâs relationship.  I originally thought that Alaska was the âhermioneâ of the group, but now that I think about it Pudge could be seen as the âHermioneâ too.  Theyâer both intellectual characters, Pudge focusing on school work and âlast wordsâ, Alaska focusing on books in general, being a book worm.  Pudge could also be considered as a âHarryâ type character, not only because he is the main character of the story, but also because he is a character who comes from outside Culver Creek, the ânew kidâ, even though his father went to the school too, just as harryâs father was a pureblood, but harry grew up with muggles.  Though as with Hermione, one could argue that Alaska is also the âharryâ because she comes form a trouble background just like Harry.  Alaskaâs mother died, and Harryâs parents died too.  Colonel could be considered as a âRonâ, partly because he is best friends with the âharry potterâ character, but also because he is the one who know how things work.  He seems to be the one who fits in the most, and shows Pudge the ropes, just as Ron taught Harry about the wizarding world in Harry Potter.
On another note, I really loved the way John Green portrayed Pudge and the Colonelâs methods of grieving for Alaska. Â They didnât try to make it seem like they were moping all the time, or that they went right back to normal right away either. Â I have never lost someone who I ahve been very close to, but I can imagine that John Green did a good job of portraying grief. Â Please correct me if Iâm wrong...
