“Stay behind me,” Felix instructed, positioning himself between Addie and the door. His eyes narrowed as he prepared for whatever might come through.
Addie’s breath caught in her throat. “What if it’s just my mom?”
“Or someone looking for answers,” Felix countered, steeling himself. “We can’t take any chances.”
The door creaked open, revealing a figure cloaked in dark attire. “Is anyone home?” the stranger called out, their voice low and husky. Felix’s grip tightened on the dagger.
“Who are you?” Addie demanded, her voice steadier than she felt, stepping bravely beside Felix. “What do you want?”
The figure paused, the shadows hiding their features. “I’m looking for Felix Knight. I need to talk privately.”
Felix’s heart raced, suspicion flaring. “You’ve got the wrong person. Get out.”
“Listen,” the stranger said, lowering their hood to reveal sharp features and piercing blue eyes. “I know about the necklace, and I understand the danger you’re both in. If you don’t want your lives disrupted further, you should come with me.”
Addie and Felix exchanged a quick glance, weighing their options. “We don’t even know you!” Addie snapped.
“True,” the figure conceded. “But you know me enough to realize I’m not here to harm you. It’s imperative you hear what I have to say—before she shows up.”
Felix’s pulse raced as he met Addie’s wide eyes, the unspoken concern dancing between them like an electric current. “Who are you?” he pressed, his voice low but firm. “What do you know about the necklace? And who’s ‘she’?”
The stranger inhaled, their expression shifting from urgency to grim resolve. “My name is Elara. I used to work with your mother. She’s caught in something far darker than either of you can grasp, and she hasn’t been forthcoming about what she knows.” Her gaze hardened, as if she could see through them, peeling back layers of innocence to reveal a raw vulnerability beneath. “As for the necklace? It’s a key to unlocking your past, Felix. Not just yours, but Addie’s too.”
Felix tightened his grip on the dagger, wariness flooding his veins. “And why should we trust you?”
“Because I’m risking everything by being here right now,” Elara replied, the urgency in her voice underscoring her importance. “And because you don’t have the luxury of time. They’ll come for you both, and once they do, it’ll be too late.” A low rumble of thunder echoed outside, as if the storm itself mirrored the tension in the room.
Addie hesitated, her heart pounding in sync with the suspicion swirling in her mind. “Why us? What do we have to do with this?”
Elara stepped closer, lowering her voice. “The bloodline your mother spoke of—it's not just a term. It’s a legacy burdened with danger. You two are entwined in a web of history that extends beyond your understanding. However, you can’t escape the truth.”
