[ the start ] – @booksbyem
She hated to admit it but Mai might have left a few things slip. If only when she got a letter about some old files from her dads working days. The brunette did her best, hearing a reference from a mother of a kid she tutors, Mai stood across from the building. Eyeing awkwardly around as if waiting for something to happen before she finally sighed and got the courage to walk in.
This wasn’t defeat, she told herself, asking for help is natural. Not like she had anything else to do, gripping the messenger bag a bit tighter to keep herself steady she walked in. A few people were already there, not surprising, a body pushed past her to leave. Mai rolled her eyes muttering a few choice words… Giving a small gaze around dark hues eventually spotted a woman.
“Hi – you’re Ember, right?” Mai said softly, doing her best not to look like a weirdo.
Disorganized chaos; that was the only way to describe the top of Ember's desk. It might not seem as if she knew where anything was but that could be the furthest thing from the truth. Even with coffee cups scattered all over the desk. Thankfully, she had never spilled coffee on any of the important documents. That's not to say she hasn't spilt coffee before. Many times in fact over the last couple of years.
Although, most of the time she chose to do her work outside of her office. Being stuck in an office eight hours a day never suited the she-wolf. She would rather create her office where ever she happens to be at that moment in time. Most times it was at home, the cafe, or even a friends house. One time she even parked her behind next to a time to get some work done. However, that didn't mean she didn't need a place to meet new clients or to go over stuff with them. This would be why she find herself stuck in her office on this beautiful mid-morning. Having just finished up with a client, Ember was closing up the file when she heard her name spoken. Her head lifted to be greeted by a young woman looking a little lost.
"Hello! Yes, that would be me. How can I help you?" Ember greeted and then answered Mai's question. The whole time she took in the other, trying to figure out what it was she might need.
cfhowlings:
“ that’s not a very wise thing to be doing at the moment. ” lana dipped her spoon into her ice cream, bringing it back up to suck the sweet treat off, emerald gaze flicking back towards the elders once ember had moved enough for her to do so. “ the elders, hunters, and my husband. mostly the hunters and my husband in case something goes awry. ” in other words, despite how calm and collected she looked, she was ready to shift and race across the street if there was a need that she should. “ are you enjoying the ‘ festival ? ” she asked, putting air quotes around the word. “ you should pay more attention. just because they seem like they’re not going to do anything now doesn’t mean they won’t attack. ”
"I know," Ember confessed. She knew and was taught to always be watchful from all sides. That to close one's eyes off to just one perimeter could end badly. "That's right your husband is a detective. He must hate all of this. You're probably not happy about it either. I can't blame you. If my mate was up there I'd be pacing back and forth, inching to get up there." It was moments such as this that Ember was glad she didn't have a mate. The fear her parents must have felt at having to watch the other die was one Ember hoped to never go through. The thought of it still haunted her to this day. "Me? Enjoy this?" She asked sarcastically as her hand moved out in front of her, emphasizing that the festival was her topic of enjoyment. "No! This is so not my thing. I would rather be solving a ridiculously hard math problem then be here," she answered. "You're right! And it was foolish on my part to let my guard down at such a time."
leandroxxr:
Like most things, Leo was trying his hardest to find the fun in everything, and this day was no exception. Trying to ignore the hunter filth that flooded their streets he tried his hardest to enjoy the time surrounded by all the wolves. This party of sorts was bringing out the best in all of the wolves. Many of the small businesses that filled their town brought out all the stops to make the day enjoyable for the wolves. So far, Leo’s favorite had been all the food. Especially since he had spent most of the afternoon trying to get drunk. Now that he was slightly tipsy and enjoying some french fries, he was a happy guy. Well, that was until he felt the sharp pain of someone stepping on his toes. Fine, maybe wearing sandals to a crowded town square had been a bad idea. Smelling immediately it was a wolf he made a big and playful show of getting stepped on. Yelping loudly and pulling his foot back. “Ow!!” He shouted, grinning down at the girl. “Watch where you’re stepping Ignis.” Leo teased while moving so he stood in front of her more. “I’m not sure I’m going to be able to ever forgive you for stepping on me…” He all but whimpered out, trying his best to put on a big show for the obviously on edge girl. However, the corners of his mouth began to twitch as he fought back a big smile.
If the she-wolf wasn't on edge beforehand she sure was now. The person standing behind her could be anyone. Not that would mind if it was a wolf. She would feel bad for hurting them but a wolf was far better than a hunter that was for sure. The man's shout caused Ember's head to jerk upwards to find Leo standing behind her. This, of course, was only possible due to her short height and his tall one. So it was Leo's foot that she stepped on. "Oh shush it, Caeli! You're acting like a big baby. I said I was sorry. On top of that I doubt little young me could do much damage to your big old foot," she responded with a smirk. "Is that so? Well, I want to make sure that you not going to forgive me is well worth it for me I'll just take have to take your fries as well."
cloverxxa:
“Yeowch!!” Clover yelped, pulling her foot back quickly before grinning at the girl. “Oh don’t say sorry Ember, we’re all stepping on each other’s toes tonight.” The she-wolf giggled as she plopped a handful of popcorn into her mouth. Quickly remembering her manners she offered Ember some of the snack as well. “So, how have you been holding up tonight? No one giving you a hard time, right?” Clover asked, thin brows coming together as she looked her over. It was obvious no one was really holding up well in town tonight, well except maybe the hunters, they obviously had the upper hand tonight. They had all been raised to kill their kind while many of the wolves, Clover included, had never even dreamt of hurting anyone. Being forced to party with certified murders didn’t exactly make anyone breath easy. “Are you here with anybody? Would you mind if we hung out for a little bit? I could use a ski ball partner.”
Clover's yelp told Ember all she needed to know. Her little misstep caused another pain. Ember didn't like causing others pain. That wasn't to say there weren't a few people she'd like to see in pain. About five of them had just moved into Wolfstone. "That's more metaphorically speaking than real life. In real life, I just stepped on your foot. Although, both probably hurt just in different ways," she commented, returning Clover's smile. A bit worried about Clover's foot still, the Ignis wolf failed to miss the bag of popcorn in Clover's hand until offered her some. "Oh thank you!" She thanked the other as her hand grabbing some popcorn from the bag and followed Clover's actions of popping it into her mouth. While chewing Ember thought over Clover's question. She couldn't say anyone was giving her a hard time. Not that she was really giving anyone a chance to get close to her. "This whole night is a nightmare. I can't help wondering what in the world the Elders are thinking. Let's hunters into the town. Asking all of us to throw a party for them. It's as if they are saying, yes please come kill us. No, no one has gotten close enough. It's as if they're avoiding me. Maybe they are," she answered. The young wolf's eye scanned the area just to see if her suspicions were correct. Even though she knew it was her that was avoiding everyone. "No! This being the reason for me walking the outer line of the party. If my uncle found me I'd be stuck on his hip for the rest of the night. Sure! That could be fun. Ski ball? You sure you want me for a partner?"

Could one stalk ones mate? No…right? Ezra couldn’t help seeking her out once the lovely, and altogether beguiling, scent of sweet pea began dancing in the air around him. Their first meeting hadn’t been as long as he would have liked, ending rather abruptly when a patient had been admitted into the ER. Strange how life worked, they were in the same pack and had he been in Wolfstone instead of a rotation at another hospital then he would have found his mate sooner. Ezra supposed it was something he would need to thank his best friend for, if Anais hadn’t of needed him back here he might still be gone. A low, albeit, frustrated growl escaped the alpha as he attempted tracking down his alluring little omega, she was quite evasive. Once he’d thought he had found her, her scent would pull him to another location, his inner wolf pacing just underneath the surface wanting her next to him during the Elder’s latest stunt. Flashbacks of her injuries during their first encounter taunting him for failing to be there to protect her, would she fault him for it? Honestly, Ezra couldn’t claim to know her mind but if she did, he damn sure do his best to atone for it. The snap of a twig, much too soft for anyone but a wolf to hear, alerted him to her location– finally. It never crossed his mind that she could have been trying to avoid him, not until he had already closed the distance between them. His resolve faltered for a moment, debating whether he should maintain her space or not, he knew which option he preferred but which did she? Lost in his internal debate, he didn’t realize she had not only stopped moving forward but had stepped back onto his foot, his hands reaching out to steady her, “No need to apologize at all, are you alright?”
It felt like a dream. His touch, it was like no other. The creation of shiver at the spot his hands touched slowly spread throughout her body. Goosebumps formed the second the tremble reached her arms. Lids dropped down over hazel eyes the moment the scent of cedarwood drifted passed her nose. Cedarwood; a smell that has become all too familiar for the she-wolf. The first time she found herself surrounded by the scent she was half-conscious lying upon an ER bad after the doomed bonfire clean up. At the time, she tried to force her eyes open but even what little she did get them open the only thing that could be seen was the silhouette of a figure standing at the end of the bed. Blinking a few times, Ember tried to focus her sight more; however, before she could the figure was gone. The only thing was his scent. A scent that calmed her and even now she felt calm. It was strange. She felt safe. Something she shouldn't have felt with a man she knew nothing about. "No need to apologize? I have hurt your foot for sure. That is enough of a reason for me to apologize. I am as fine as one can be at this moment in time," she remarked just before turning to face him. Her movement not as steady as it should have been. Feet twisting on each other, Ember soon found herself falling into the man. Hands moved up to catch her. landing on his chest without thought as to where they were now placed. All too slowly her head tilted up only to stop once their eyes met. "Sorry!" She wanted to say but no the words froze on her tongue.
Once more Ember found herself in a story as old as she could remember. These directives from the Elders that basically demanded that everyone attend an event whether they wanted to or not were nothing more than a pain in Ember's side. She couldn't express just how much she hated anything events that dealt with large groups of people. Nothing good ever happens when she attended one. Her biggest example would be the bonfire just weeks ago. You would think that the Elders would have learned their lesson when it came to dealing with the hunters. Nope! They still let them into the town even after another wolf was killed. Those pieces of shit killed her parents, which is why she has been doing her best to avoid every single one of them. There was no telling what her inner wolf might do if she came face to face with a hunter. Since she was required to be here, Ember did her best to keep to the shadows. Can't run into any unwanted company that way. Sure it would be nice to spend time with her friends and if she saw any she would go say hi. Things were going great until Ember moved to step back and found herself stepping on someone foot seconds before she bumped into them. "Sorry," she mumbled, not sure if she wanted to turn around or not.
cfhowlings:
“ hello ! we’re having a sale today. all pre - made bouquets come with a candle of your choice for free ! ” this was annoying. the only reason clara had even ventured out of her house and back into town was because the elders had requested for her to. trying to put on a happy face while being scared out of her mind that a hunter was going to pop in and say hello was ― nauseating. “ if that doesn’t interest you, all candles are buy one get one free. ”
"Hello!" Ember greeted back as she let the door close behind her. Her entrance into the flower shop came about due to Ember wanting to get off the sidewalk. She found it was easier to hide when one wasn't out in plain sight. "Free candles? You might just be making an offer I can't pass up. My office is in need of some new bouquets. Do you know how hard it is to liven up math?" She asked as a joke. Even though she joked about it a good part of it was the truth. Ember had yet to find anyone that found math as exciting as her. If only joking about her passion for math was her reason for coming in here. "On another topic, you wouldn't mind if I hide in here for a little bit. I'll even buy a few bouquets if you do?"
cfhowlings:
“ you’re blocking my view. ” it was said low, enough so that one of her own would easily hear her speaking to them, enough so that a hunter would have to strain. rather than join the chaos across the street, her glimmering gaze had been firmly locked on the elders and police as they moved through downtown wolfstone. she hadn’t seen any new faces yet, smelled any new scents that she wasn’t used to and for that she was grateful. despite the otherwise calm expression on her face, she was ready to pounce at a moment’s notice should she need to. “ can you move a little to the left please ? ”
Not in any real hurry Ember's gradually walked down the sidewalk. Stopping every so often in order to get a good look around, she found herself having just come to a stop when she heard a voice behind her. "Oh!" She said as she tuned to see who's view she was blocking. "Sorry, Lana. I didn't see you there. More like I'm not really paying attention," she confessed fully knowing that it was unwise of her to ignore anything that could be taking place around her. "Sure! What exactly are you looking at?"
Since I’m in the need for more plots for Ember I’m going to send out a STARTER CALL for the event. If any that would like a starter from Ember you know what to do.
Thoughts about the last time she made her way through the hospital entrance/exit came to Ember's mind as she made her way into the hospital. This time instead of being forced to use crutches in order to move around, the she-wolf was able to walk on her own two feet. And after this visit, the only things remaining from the fire would the scars. Both internal and external. Not that Ember was going to think about the internal ones at this point in time. The only thing on her mind was getting the stitches out of her head. The darn things inches so much. Just the thought caused her hand to move up, rubbing the back of her head. Her fingers tips were met with barely-there bristles of hair. As if stitches weren't bad enough they had to shave part of her head. Ember tried her best not to let her frustration grow over the loss of some hair as she walked towards the elevator.
Cedarwood. She was in the middle of the hospital and yet all she could smell was cedarwood. A less curious wolf would continue on their way; however, Ember had a bad habit of letting her curiosity get the better of her. The hunt was on. There was no stopping her. She had to find out just where the smell was coming from. Not the smartest idea, seeing how it would make her late for her appointment. Though, she was determined to discover just how cedarwood could overcome the typical bleach smell of a hospital. A whole 15 minutes; that's how long it took her to find over of the scent. That might not seem like a long time for most but for Ember, it seemed like forever. Or maybe the forever was how long she stood there staring at the man's back. She wanted to reach out, touch his back; however, no matter how hard she tried she couldn't move her arm. Instead, she just continued to stand there even after he turned around.

“Ah.” A shiver slips along her spine, causing the thin brunette to cringe slightly. “Perhaps you should be softer on your voice than.” The she-wolf shoots her friend a sympathetic smile before gracefully rising to her feet. Almost as though she’s floating on air, she glides across the small hospital room to perch herself on the edge of Ember’s bed, a hand reaching out to gently grasp one of her own. “It’s a lot to process.” Which was certainly an understatement. “I suppose panic affects us all differently. I’m just happy you made it back to me in one piece.” And that was saying something, considering the night Ember had been through. When Lux received the phone call regarding her best friend, the panic had sent her reeling. But seeing her now, as good as one could be, considering, her nerves had been eased. “Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable? Has your uncle been informed?”
One easily forgets many things when they're in the presence of their best friend. Such as the fact that a sore throat meant no yelling or talking loudly. Ember soon realized her mistake within seconds of calling out her friend's name. Rubbing at her throat in the hopes that it would help to smooth the pain she now found herself in. "Yeah, I wasn't thinking," she whispered this time just as Lux took hold of her hand. "Panic? Who's in a panic?" She asked a little too loudly again. "Damn it!" She mumbled, rubbing her throat more. "This is why I choose not to talk. Yeah, I'm in a panic or it felt like it. Hitting that water sent a shock through me that..." While the words were on the tip of her tongue, Ember couldn't seem to work out just how she wanted to describe the emotions that surged throughout her body the moment she hit the water. "You know how much I hate water," she finally stuttered out.
"You can't get rid of me that easily," she teased while squeezing Luz's hand. Ember learned a long time ago that life liked throwing a lot of curveballs her way. For the most part, she's been able to deal with each one as they came. After tonight she was lost on what all this meant. Why was it all ways her? A question she knew no answer would ever be found. The fire-wolf was just glad the life gave her Lux and her uncle in order to help her through so many curveballs. "Water, please? Yes, he was the first one through those doors. I'm shocked they were able to keep him out as long as they did," she answered, making sure to keep her voice at a whisper. That didn't stop her from giggling at her overprotective uncle.
