my sister has apparently had to stop playing Skyrim because she stole every book in the game to stock her house so now her house is full of books to the point where it almost breaks the game and every time she tries to read one guards teleport into her home and arrest her

I want to win the lottery for many reasons - mostly to help people & animals. After getting rid of debt and building a house, I would give most of the money away.

One of my dreams, though? To create a tiny press that publishes monographs about every animal - by scientists but for general readers. Ever tried to find a book on lynx? How about tamarins? Pallas cats?

They don’t exist.

I want to read them.

I want to celebrate the people that love, study, and work to conserve all the creatures - not just the well known or charismatic ones.

Now to find that ticket…

1. I really enjoy bombastic, narrative rock albums by bands like Rush, The Protomen, Coheed & Cambria & composer Jim Steinman. Has anyone ever come across a book with a similar feel?

2. I’ve been very into mysterious Victorian novels lately: Dracula, The Woman in White, The Beetle, Jekyll & Hyde. Are there similar, lesser known works?

3. Since the new Masters of the Universe movie is out, I’m curious if there are any books that feel like the 80s cartoons Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power?

I haven’t been having luck with Reddit so I’m migrating my book posts here in hope of getting some recs!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe/ She-Ra Princess of Power -- for the fantasy/science fiction combination

Labyrinth (film by Henson) - mostly for the Goblin King!

Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - the dwarves, Legolas, and Gimli are my favorites

ElfQuest by Wendy and Richard Pini - I love the rich cast!

Claymore anime - women sword-wielders - yay!

Rurouni Kenshin manga - for its ability to move between the comic, the serious, the romantic, and the historical.

Law and Order original series - mostly for Lennie Briscoe, but also for the development (however rare) of other characters and for solving the mystery.

Rush (the band) - for the complex, narrative lyrics

The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling - well-written LGBTQ+ fantasy

Ray Bradbury (especially The Halloween Tree)- for the poetic language

The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

Star Wars (the original three) - for the sense of fun and bond between the heroes

Arrows of the Queen series by Mercedes Lackey - for telepathic animals and the school-to-world transition

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin - for the beauty of the language and the mix of reality and fantasy

Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson - for the blend of reality and fantasy and LGBTQ+ themes

Batman - mostly for the Joker ;)

Thor - mostly for Loki ;)

The Battle Hymn Cycle by Ralph Peters - the historical content and the realistic descriptions of war

Vellum and Ink by Hal Duncan

My favorite classics are Middlemarch by Eliot, Our Mutual Friend by Dickens, Life and Fate by Grossman, and The Woman in White by Collins

My favorite scary titles are House of Leaves by Danielewski, The Stand by King, and Dark Harvest by Partridge

My research is all about big cats and dangerous animals, so I should also include The Tiger by Vaillant, Spell of the Tiger by Montgomery, and Monster of God by Quammen

I'm interested in nonfiction as well as fiction, so thank you for any suggestions!
