I had to spread this, I can’t stop reciting it while I’m going through daily life

I remember reading one of the first-ever articles on the original Half Life before it ever came out how dramatically the author hyped up an enemy he didn’t know the official name of, so he called it “the lamp from hell” and swore that the way it kills your player was (I’m quoting as closely as I can remember) “the most disturbing imagery ever, EVER!!!! BURNED into a GAMING DISC!!!!” I know every enemy from Half Life by now, even having never played it, and I still have no idea what this guy was talking about. He distinctly mentioned the Barnacle somewhere else, so he wasn’t thinking of the Barnacle. It’s just a mystery.

Maybe he just got SO excited by Half Life he got confused and thought his lamp was in the game, plus when he looked over at it, it was killing a guy????????

So I just found the article, and it clarifies nothing. I remembered it almost exactly right:

….But the author already shows and describes the barnacles, the one thing I thought might be closest to a “lamp” with any notably unpleasant killing method. He extensively describes the head crabs and the tentacle, too. He says he doesn’t want to spoil what the “lamps” are really called but that the way they kill you is so terrible, we will “know it when we see it?!”

It’s not the tentacles…he specifies them too in the very next line!
