Just in case you thought you were alone there’s no one on earth who know’s how you feel. Maybe there’s been a shift in the planets and stars. Maybe Life just sucks… One thing I do know is that these last few weeks have been rough for a lot of people, including myself. I’ve had days when I couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed. Nights when all I could do was drink myself to sleep and not care if I’d wake up the next morning. When Stephanie called me and asked me to help her express how she’d been feeling, I couldn’t wait to make these pictures. Art, to me, is very therapeutic and to make photographs that embody a feeling that I can directly relate to… well, there aren’t words to describe how badly we both needed this and how happy I am to know that there is a way to get through rough times without completely destroying one’s self. Depression is not a game and no matter how many people tell you “smile, it will get better” or something simple like that, it’s never just that simple. I’ve found art- without art, I would not be alive today… but whatever your circumstances, there’s always a way to express how you’re feeling and get through whatever it is that is keeping you down. It may take days or it may take years… but know that once you decide to get better, there are ways to bring yourself back from that place. Speak up. Reach out.
