Betta Tail Type and Colours/Patterns Cons

I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I love the wide variety of bettas available. There are so many beauties out there that we all drool over. However, that beauty comes at a cost – not only at the expense of your wallet but the health of the betta as well.

So, I wanted to make a general guide to let people know what to potentially expect when getting certain tail types and colour patterns. It’s important to note that not all bettas will experience the problems listed below, but there’s a high chance, especially if you have a betta of a certain tail type and pattern that are both high-risk (such as a halfmoon dragonscale).

Do you have any fish in need of a home right now?

I️ have one rescue with me, PSMT1, and someone has discussed wanting him, but things have not been fully confirmed so I️ am open to considering others! I️ am waiting until after the new year to take on more so I️ can rearrange and make more accessible space.

So, what exactly makes these betas rescues? Like, how do you generally acquire them?

These bettas are usually acquired from a pet store, but I️ ask a manager if I️ can take them home free of charge and explain the fish’s condition and what they need to heal. Sometimes they refuse, in which case I️ don’t buy the fish so as not to support a business that cares for the fish in that way, and sometimes they offer me a 50% discount, which I️ only take if the fish is ill enough to worry me significantly and I️ know they need medicine and warm, clean water as soon as possible. I️ shouldn’t really accept the 50% discount, but I️ have a soft spot for these guys and only do it on a rare occasion. The majority of my pickups have been 100% technical rescues, seeing as I️ got them free from a bad environment, and the remaining few, specifically the two I️ picked up from Pet Supermarket (PSMT1 and 2) were 50% off. Drop offs/surrenders are also rescues. The bettas I️ choose at the store are ones who are in the worst condition possible that I️ know I️ can still heal. Wonder Woman was picked up with the early stages of dropsy and significant SBD, for example. I️ have also picked up a few with advanced dropsy for free in order to end their suffering peacefully rather than letting them die in a cold cup in a store and thrown away. Have Psmt1 or Wonder Woman found homes yet? 💞💞

PSMT1 may have found a home, but it’s unsure to me at the moment. Wonder Woman has unfortunately passed due to dropsy.

Sorry I haven’t been showing off my bettas recently. I’ve got a bit of a snag and have been busy. So allow me to give a late introduction to my rescue betta! Meet Le Petit Prince! He is a blind rescue from @bowtiebettas and was shipped out to me which was scary but paid off. I was, at first, hesitant to own a long finned betta, but Noah and I think because of the bad case of fin rot he had when she first rescued him that his tail will most likely not grow any longer than it already is. He may be blind but he is very active and good natured. He is a Good Dog™ and I love him. He is a sight to behold. I’m sure you can clearly see how handsome he is. He is the apple of my eye. Eye see why Noah loved him so much. I’m glad I finally got him bc I had had my eye on him for quite some time

I’m incredibly sad to report that Wonder Woman has passed after a short but very agressive bout of dropsy, likely a result of the damage she sustained from the bout she had when I rescued her. Swim in peace, beautiful girl. I’m so sorry.

Good news!! Our first shipping adventure was a success - @pet-of-subs received her sweet boy, Le Petit Prince, unhappy but with no problems!! However, it has taught us an important lesson - shipping that far is EXPENSIVE!!! People nearer to Tennessee will have cheaper costs, but for shipping to the west coast, this was just under $140 for overnight. Definitely something to be aware of for non-local people wanting to adopt one of our rescues.

Great news!! Wonder Woman, the lovely red girl who has fought off dropsy and severe SBD, is officially in the clear and ready for adoption!! Here she is in the cup at the pet store:

and her in the last week:

She's gorgeous and very personable and would make an amazing, wiggly little companion! Her name can of course be changed, and I'd prefer her to be in at least a 10 gallon with plenty of cover.

PSMT1 is also back up for adoption!! He's a handsome little man, but he does have issues with fin biting despite heavy cover and IALs, so I'd prefer him to go to someone experienced who will continue to work on separation anxiety issues, which seem to have helped him significantly. I don't have any photos on him on this device, but he has several on his tag!! He'd do just fine in a five gallon, since he's a small boy.

Finally, I'm looking to rehome my personal ADFs. Local pickup only, and they come with basically everything you need. I'm asking $50 for everything (tank, decor, food, filter, frogs), but it's not set, as I just want them to go to a good home.

Hello! I might be rescuing a betta from a person who had one in a half gallon bowl for over a year with no water change. His fins are almost entirely gone and he is severely underfed, is there anything I should know to do? I have a heated cycled 5.5 gal for him to go in and have prime and aquarium salt too. I have had my other betta for a few weeks, this just came up recently and I want to help him

I'm so sorry for the late response! I would highly recommend buying StressCoat or any of it's equivalents and Indian Almond Leaves/rooibos tea to add to his tank to promote healing. Make sure you keep his water clean, and if you don't see the fin rot go away in a week or two, start treating him with antibiotics such as Maracyn. Good luck!!!

Update

Hello everybody!! Sorry for the long absence, life has caught up with me, but I will continue posting regularly.

PSMT1 is doing amazingly, and he's just moved up into a temporary 10 gallon! He has found a local adopter, @its-hufflecreampuff, and will spend his life in a 20H that I'm setting up and cycling.

PC3 has gone blind, but is still happy and healthy! The wonderful @pet-of-subs will be adopting him very soon, and has already named him Le Petit Prince. She'll spoil him to bits and you guys will get to see updates all the time!

I have picked up three rescues that I'll be posting photos of later. One was a surrender from my friend @sacrificedinchess, who bought her at petco because she fell in love and gave her to me to heal up, and she's since gone to her forever home and is in a bright little 10 gallon! The only boy of the bunch is a handsome, grumpy veiltail boy, PC..4 I believe, who's done very well, coming from looking half-dead, pale and clamped, to a vibrant, angry wiggle. The third is a girl who looked on her death bed, showing the early signs of dropsy and the worst SBD I've seen, that I dubbed Wonder Woman in the hopes it'd help her and because she's a brilliant red and very active, even though she was so sick. Less than a week and some Kanaplex later, her SBD and swelling are gone and I'm cautiously optimistic.

I'll make at least weekly updates from now on and I'll get pictures up tonight!

What are all your current rescues?

My current rescues are PC3, the sweetest little betta you'll ever meet, and PSMT1, a happy little wiggly pumpkin!!!

If PSMT 2 makes it I might be able to take him. He is beautiful! I just have to convince my parents to let me get another tank.

PSMT2 had an adopter, but unfortunately he passed. I was completely shocked, he had been doing better every day and then I woke up one morning and he was gone. His gills were inflamed, which was very odd; he’d been getting daily water changes and hadn’t been gasping at all. There must have been something going on internally that I just didn’t pick up on. Poor sweet boy, swim in peace. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. However, PSMT1 is up for adoption and I'm putting PC3 back up for adoption; his possible adopter was going to put him in a community tank that was very not suited to bettas and could not have another tank, so I politely declined.
