ok so i started calling it this because of my boyfriend actually. the general idea is that since bpd makes people very dependent on attention and affection, we’re often depressed without a relationship.

so like, depression itself isn’t poof cured with a relationship, but because this specific kind of depression (which ive been calling bpd depression) is caused by not being in a relationship/not getting enough attention, getting into a relationship can often ‘cure’ it.

Hi! Can i ask if you have any tips for writing a male main character with bpd? I'm trying to make it clear that he has the disorder without naming it, but the last thing I want is to erase his personality.. Sorry for the annoyance, have a great day!!

For me, having BPD makes it really hard to intentionally write a character as having BPD or not having BPD - it’s all normal to me, but I can try.

Honestly, the first thing I’d suggest is to not write a character as having something without stating they do. It’s extremely frustrating for those of us who have the thing - the only examples i can think of off the top of my head are with autism spencer reid and trans characters pidge and it’s awful having a character you know is canon but people deny it and there’s no way to prove it. At the very least, mention it in an authors note.

Also - have people with bpd proofread. I’m a good editor in general if you want me to edit, but seriously. Get people who have bpd to proofread. there’s a long history of cluster b people and cluster b traits being shown as toxic.

First i’m gonna list some things to avoid at all costs

do not portray the character as abusive. that’s a huge stereotype about bpd and it’s horrible. it’s actively harmful to us.

it helps that it’s a male character, bc a male drama queen is called uhhhh… there isn’t a name for that because men (especially cis men) are allowed to be dramatic as long as they arent emotional about it, but try to avoid the Drama Queen stereotype as well. 

Ok now some suggestions of things to include

being Super Attached to one person (a Favorite Person/FP isn’t always a part of bpd and some people don’t use that concept for it, but it’s very common)

unstable sense of identity. mimicking personalities is a normal thing, but all cluster b’s mimic to an extreme. it’s a trait of all cluster b personality disorders (BPD is a cluster b)

while depression isn’t Cured by getting into a relationship, BPD depression sometimes is. idk if “bpd depression” is an Official Thing but that’s what i’ve been calling this, it’s weird and i can elaborate more if people are curious

what bpd feels like

- one minute you have the worst anxiety ever, next minute you can’t remember what it feels like to not be happy - constantly craving to go places with friends but feeling like no one would actually want to go with you - having 15 different music playlists for every mood - always on edge - not quite knowing if you are imagining a symptom or if other symptoms are making you wonder if you are imagining it - enough trust issues to last a lifetime (and then some) - being unprepared for the future bc you didn’t think you’d live this long - dissociating bc of the weirdest things that have no reason to cause you to dissociate - watching a movie/ reading a book and then suddenly having a new personality - mood swings for no reason - feeling the most intense sense of isolation even in a room with many people - /that/ person - knowing that you should get professional help but refusing to get a therapist bc you wouldn’t be able to trust them

hey i know that a lot of borderlines on tumblr talk about having a favorite person, and while that’s all fine and good, remember that having an FP is not in the bpd criteria and it’s totally fine if you don’t get them!

some people never get FPs!

some people rarely get FPs!

some people get FPs but don’t want to talk about it because it’s too personal or for some other reason!

some people experience FPs differently than others!

it’s all okay, because FPs are not in the bpd criteria and don’t affect whether you have bpd or not.

idk its nice to see positive traits blanket assigned to bpd sufferers for once and it made me feel happy so i hope it can make others feel happy too. we’re fantastic people tbh!!!
