Hi! Can i ask if you have any tips for writing a male main character with bpd? I'm trying to make it clear that he has the disorder without naming it, but the last thing I want is to erase his personality.. Sorry for the annoyance, have a great day!!
For me, having BPD makes it really hard to intentionally write a character as having BPD or not having BPD - itās all normal to me, but I can try.
Honestly, the first thing Iād suggest is to not write a character as having something without stating they do. Itās extremely frustrating for those of us who have the thing - the only examples i can think of off the top of my head are with autism spencer reidĀ and trans characters pidgeĀ and itās awful having a character you know is canon but people deny it and thereās no way to prove it. At the very least, mention it in an authors note.
Also - have people with bpd proofread. Iām a good editor in general if you want me to edit, but seriously. Get people who have bpd to proofread. thereās a long history of cluster b people and cluster b traits being shown as toxic.
First iām gonna list some things to avoid at all costs
do notĀ portray the character as abusive. thatās a huge stereotype about bpd and itās horrible. itās actively harmful to us.
it helps that itās a male character, bc a male drama queen is called uhhhh⦠there isnāt a name for that because men (especially cis men) are allowed to be dramatic as long as they arent emotional about it, but try to avoid the Drama Queen stereotype as well.Ā
Ok now some suggestions of things to include
being Super Attached to one person (a Favorite Person/FP isnāt always a part of bpd and some people donāt use that concept for it, but itās very common)
unstable sense of identity. mimicking personalities is a normal thing, but all cluster bās mimic to an extreme. itās a trait of all cluster b personality disorders (BPD is a cluster b)Ā
while depression isnāt Cured by getting into a relationship, BPD depression sometimes is. idk ifĀ ābpd depressionā is an Official Thing but thatās what iāve been calling this, itās weird and i can elaborate more if people are curious
if anyone else who has bpd wants to add on feel free!
