The Blair Witch Project, 1999

Alright so this one is one that I could not stop talking about when I first watched it, it was like no horror movie I had seen (I was only fourteen) the raw footage, the lack of CGI, and the authenticity of the film felt new and cool. The way that this movie set off a domino effect in the horror genre and the entire film distribution marketing system as a whole. In fact, the movie went viral on the internet before it was even done, and convinced millions of people that they were watching actual found footage. And in a way it kinda was, the movie was almost all improvised, we weren't just watching Heather, Josh, and Mike spiral and be hunted down. We're watching Rei Hence, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams have no idea what was going on for the majority of the shoot and actually be afraid. The story is about three college students going on a trip to film a documentary about The Blair Witch. But as more time goes on and the deeper into the woods they get they realize things are worse than they first thought. The Blair Witch Project is already scary even though the title witch is never shown, nor are any of the dangers around Heather, Mike, and Josh. The only hints the audience has that they are being followed are strange noises outside their tents at night, the stick figures, and piles of rocks. All in all I give it a 9/10. The way that they are able to tell us a whole story while only using an outline and improvisation is awesome and makes it seem like anyone can make this kind of movie.

Donnie Darko (Director's Cut), 2001

I had this movie on my list for a while and in all honesty I had completely forgotten it existed but the audio on tiktok about smurfette and gargamel has been going around and so I was like, "oh yeah I need to watch that"and thank goodness I did. Set during October of 1988 with a killer soundtrack and star filled cast the film tells the story of our main character Donald (or Donnie) Darko, a high school student who was held back a year for committing arson. Early into the movie we see that this is going to be A LOT Donnie wakes up after sleepwalking into a golf field by Frank a character in a demonic bunny suit and Frank tells him that the world is going to end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds. And when he goes back to his house he sees the destruction, a plane engine had fallen into his room while he was gone. That was the start of the tangent universe, Donnie throughout the movie researches theories of time, travel and playing God. he does things that Frank tells him to because he feels as if he else owes him his life for saving him. He does things such as flood the school and burning down a house. As we get closer to "the end" we watch Donnie's mind unravel with paranoia and hallucinations. Now on a mental health note, we get to see how mental illness affects not just the person who has it but the family as well. We see his connections with everyone in his house be tested and challenged. And I kind of help. see it in a way in the beginning where him and his mom are arguing. as soon as she shuts the door you see his face hurt. I've been there, it's almost like someone is trapped in your body and saying things you don't want to. if I keep rambling for too long, I'm going to end up spilling the big twist at the end of the movie. The way that the movie covers the intense feelings of anxiety and fear felt so real and authentic. In so many movies we see characters with mental illness portrayed as a threat to society, but in this movie we see him save it with the biggest sacrifice that someone could make. So all in all go watch it right now it's on Tubi for free (with ads obviously/unfortunately). I think after spending over 2 hours watching this movie I'm going to give it a 7/10, it's honestly something I'm going to recommend for a bunch of people including everyone who reads this. The acting was fantastic and again the soundtrack was top-tier and the plot was something that at the time hadn't really been done all that much and we don't typically see it as much anymore so it's kind of refreshing.
