âLeaving you was the hardest thing Iâve ever had to do.â It tore him apart. âBut, IâŠI couldnât put you in danger.â He moved closer and kissed her softly. âI love you. Iâve loved you probably from the moment we met.â A slight grin took over his features. âWell, you lassoed mine too, Ms. Shepherd. So, I think weâre even.â
âIt will always be the hardest thing you ever had to do, because Iâm not letting you go from now on. You have me no matter what happens.â Actually the reason she had fallen for him was alot less complicated. He was perfect. Simple. To the point. Althought to say someone was perfect may cause a lot of pressure unless said with the unmost lightheartedness. Besides she expected sheâd have all the time in the world to tell him everything she loved about him...eventually. âOh âMiss Shephardâ You can say that again. But before you do we should get going to that party. The city never sleeps, but we have work tomorrow.âÂ
He grinned at her lightly. âOne of two huh? And what was the other? My dashing good looks?â He was teasing her now, but he was genuinely curious. For him, there had just been something about her that drew him in. Her personality, her wit. Brandy was beautiful inside and out and it still was a mystery to him how he had gotten so lucky.
âI should say two of the main ones. There are countless others that I didnât even comprehend to later.â She corrected herself. âThe other one was honor. You could have said the word and I would have followed you to the ends of the earth. But because you knew it wouldnât be safe you stuck to your guns and left. You put away your own wants and needs to protect me. Even waiting till the last night to kiss me proves what a man you really are. You lassoed my heart Woody Hazzard. Through and through.âÂ
âYou donât⊠still eat it if you dropped it, do you?âÂ
âNo of course not...those just go to our least favorite customers.â She said mostly joking, but a small part of her considered the possibility.Â
âNoted.â He chuckled lightly, grateful that his girlfriend always knew what to make him feel at ease. However, at her question, Woody shrugged. âDonât look at me. Iâm a cowboy boots and flannel type of guy. If you want fashion advice, your best bet is to go find Molly. But, for the record, you always look beautiful.â
The couple were definately two peas in a pod of southern charm. She too had no idea how to dress outside of her comfort zone. Just flowery dresses that bode well in the south was all that really sang to her. He was right, Molly did much better than the two of them at these sorts of things. âJust the usual then.â She said with a flush of pink cheeks loving when he called her beautiful. âCowboy boots and flannel, is one of two reasons I fell in love with you.âÂ
âI canât imagine getting tired of free pizza, but Iâll definitely take your word for it.â She gave a laugh. âWhat leads to a pizza failing grade?â
âWell so if the pizza isnât round enough or we drop an ingrediant that the custumer says theyâre allergic to it. Or if we dropped it, which I would say is the number one culprit to why we would lose a pizza.âÂ
âLetâs do it. Weâll give âem something to talk about.â He teased. âAlthough, Iâm not too sure my dancing abilities are up to par. Iâm a bit rusty.â Itâs not like heâd had a lot of practice over the last few years.
âWell if you ever get confused on what to do...just hold out your arm and Iâll do a twirl. Iâll be right there with you, and if you fail we will fail together.â  She drops her hands on her head as if she had forgotten something. âWhat dress do I wear to these types of things?â
âOh do you work there?â Esmeralda asked. âThat must be a fun job. Do you get free pizza?â
âUnlimited free pizza. You kind of get sick of it actually. Mostly because the choices are just the ones that get messed up during the day. Which would surprise you, thereâs a lot that donât make the grade.âÂ
â - Work
â - And a name/ topic to hear what they hate the most about it/them.
âI guess itâs not as exciting as I thought it would be. Itâs so different here. People donât want to talk like they do back home. Maybe I should be looking for something more exciting in such an interesting city.â She took a deep breath wondering what kind of truth bug had gotten into her. âI shouldnât be talking like this. I love my job and the people I work with.â

âHey, babe? What do you say we go out tonight? A night on the town? Itâs been awhile, and might be kind of nice.â They could go for dinner and dancing perhaps?
âWe have become a bit like home bodies...â Bo leans in giving him a peck on the cheek. âI got invited to one of those roof top parties people always talk about here. We should later tonight. They might have dancing. If not we can just be the ones that start the trend.â
âAh, I forgot about Pizza Planet.â She had only been there once when she had first moved to the US. Why had she stopped going? She gave a wry grin, âI wonder if the arcade section would still be open.â Shaking her head, she added, âI canât imagine eating there and not hearing all the game sound effects.â
âThe arcade is always open. The owner gets a bit weird if we even think about turning off those machines before we close.â Brandy was pretty sure she saw him sleeping in there one night but that might be an overshare. âThey always make some sort of noise even if nobody is playing them. But it does get a bit scary when they all stop making their sounds at the same time.âÂ
It was late. Late enough that Esmeralda knew she should go straight home. Djali was probably asleep with Zephyr watching Road to El Dorado or whatever else her son might have tricked him into. But Es was starving. Was anything even open this late? Her phone had died at work and she couldnât even Google it. Cursing, the girl looked up and was surprised to see someone passing. At this hour?Â
âExcuse me, do you know if there are any food places open right now?â
âTherâs alot of New York open right. It aight called âthe city that never sleepsâ fer nothinâ. Pizza Planet should be open. Thatâs if they didnât all go on break at the same time.âÂ

âł Biography:
A girl from a southern bay, who worked in a local diner, Brandy Shepherd was renown in the small harbour town of Thunderbolt, Georgia for her pretty eyes and a cheerful disposition. The kind of girl was born to lead, Brandy captured the hearts of nearly all who passed through. They came looking for simply a cheeseburger or a tipple of whiskey and were left haunted by the memory of a girl with eyes brighter than the sea who sang obscure songs while she wiped down tables. Of course Brandy knew she had this effect on people, but to Brandy they were just people and she tried to not get caught up in the romanticism they projected onto her. The men who professed their love for her were otherwise engaged, by a woman in another port, the road or the sea and she was too sensible to be drawn in by them. She had lived her whole life in Thunderbolt, aside from a brief stint to attend college but she had missed the kind of place where people came and went and nothing ever really happened. Life in California had been chilled but a much faster pace and Brandy had missed the little things about her home. It had busy seasons in the summer and not so busy ones in the winter but Brandy was perfectly content either way. The simplicity of her life was what she enjoyed. She drove an old Volkswagen beetle that still played cassettes which she hummed as she made drinks for customers and drove home every night after her shift to watch game shows with her sister.
Brandyâs life was simple and she was happy to continue this pattern forever. Then he rolled into town. He had a southern drawl, much heavier than her inherited one from her parents which had slowly weakened as she interacted with the people of the bay. A fast car, classic and carried a Walkman. Brandy was immediately intrigued, the people who came thorough here were hardly so young and if they were they were attached to a MacBook, had a wife and kids or were dragged by a family member. Apparently he was taking a road trip before taking a risky job, of what she didnât ask but he said he was driving to places he hadnât seen before on his way home to make memories before his job got too dangerous. After some mild flirtation across the evening, Brandy took him to a local bar and proceeded to sing old hits on karaoke before parting ways. The week that followed was the most romantic that had ever ensued upon Brandy and she found herself falling in love with a man she didnât even know the name of. On his final day in the small coastal town he kissed Brandy and left her something to remember him by. A locket that bore the name of the man that Brandy loved, Woody Hazzard. At first Brandy tried to see the romantic side of being in love with a stranger she wound never see again, walking around and loving a man that wasnât around to whom no one else could compare.
But that be she quite tiresome quite quickly. Brandy was in love and she needed to find him. Borrowing her sisterâs iPad her quest began. She pulled up Facebook but evidently Woody was too old fashioned even to have one of those. They could have exchanged numbers but Brandy had been the one who insisted that the locket was enough for him to come back to find her. How she regretted that now. Woody was a ghost. She tried to forget about him but that week played so heavily in her mind, what if he would never come back? After all his job was dangerous. Brandy moved forward with her life, dating a few boys and all but forgetting about Woody. Then, there he was by pure coincidence. In the background of a photo on her timeline was Woody. A friend of herâs had recently visited New York and there as plain as day was Woody walking across the street. He was older. But it was him. Despite protests from her family, Brandy packed her bags and boarded the Greyhound straight to New York City, calling ahead to stay in the guest room of her college friend Barbara Roberts and her boyfriend Kenneth Carson before she ended up homeless. Brandy didnât have much of a plan but not having a plan and feeling the excitement in her stomach of finding her great love was better than moving through her simple life forever dreaming about a man she could never have.
She got a job at the Pizza Planet in Time Square. A nice busy location she could network, make friends and ask questions, besides she liked meeting people and she knew this was what she was good at. Molly Davis made her shifts more exciting, a fellow waitress paying off her college debts, Brandy became good friends with Molly quite naturally but a part of thinks that is because Molly reminded her of her sister back in Georgia. Brandyâs life is certainly different to her small town existence back at the bay but with her Walkman and all her old cassettes from her car in tow sheâs managed to adjust to her new pace of life. Brandy hadnât seen Barbie since graduating college as nothing would really ever bring her to Georgia unless she went to specifically see her. Luckily, Barbie hadnât really changed much and her and Ken seemed to be stronger then ever. Having helped the two date back in college, she found living with the couple not too dissimilar to being friends with them at school and sooner or later it began to feel as easy as it was back then. Though her sister had warned her about living with a couple Brandy had instead found it quite pleasant, having been friends with them both originally anyway. For the time being Brandy goes about her day, making friends and casually searching for Woody. But in a big city sheâs not having much luck. Though she wears his locket daily, sheâs open to the idea yet new life may bring some extra new but for now sheâs got her eyes on the prize and that is finding the elusive Woody.

This was a mistake. Whatever Taran had thought this party was going to be, it had all turned on its ear when he strolled through those doors. Eyes he couldnât see were obvious in the itch they caused and the collar of his borrowed tuxedo tightened with every breath he took. Here were shadowed nightmares and drunken goddesses, people with souls of gold and the radiance to convey it. Taran still had dirt underneath his nails.
There seemed to be two options here: either he could leave or he could get drunk. Taran already stuck out like the weed in an otherwise uniform field, it was hardly like it could get any worse. Plus, one at least implied he tried.Â
Mind made up, he began to move towards the bar, ducking between what felt like the entirety of New York City. Eyes never leaving the floor, Taran carefully navigated the sea of people. The bar was mere steps away when he collided with somebody, sending both parties sprawling.
âI am so sorry,â Taran began, focus somewhere around the individualâs shoulder. âI promise, I didnât mean to knock you down, honest. Iâm not used to this, see, and itâs all just a lot more overwhelming than I thought it would be. I promise, on my life, I didnât want to knock you or anyone else downâŠâ He continued to babble, hands moving and tone clearly becoming more and more agitated.Â
âHang on there. Youâre going faster then a bull at a rodeo.â She said almost hearing her motherâs southern voice coming from her own mouth. In an attempt to calm him down she gave a friendly grabbing of the shoulders focusing in on his eyes. âItâs alright. No need to get upset about it. We are both out of our element here. Probably why we fell into each other like bowling pins. How about you just start with a name? We can just go from there...â
Brandy sat in bed with her knees to her chest. Every so often she had those moments were home couldnât feel any farther away from her. She knew she came here to create something for herself, but she couldnât forget everything she had left behing to do so. All the animals she used to care for, all the siblings she used to protect, and the parents that raised all of them. Gone.Â
Suddenly a tear dropped from her cheek. This is not how she wanted to feel, not in front of the one she cared so much about. It didnât seem fair for her to just drop in mood like that. For it to just wash over her like a wave of misery. âWoody I--Does this feeling ever go away? The missing home kind.âÂ
