NATHAN.

      nathan hated hospitals, to the point where it made him anxious being in them. but when nathan found out that his father had been rushed to hospital, he vowed to never leave his side, even if he did end up dying. he wanted to be there to say goodbye, as grim as that sounded. 

  and even though richie had insisted he go back home and sleep, he refused to leave. it’s about noon, and nathan’s fighting to stay awake, leaning on richie’s shoulder. he hadn’t been sleeping, too afraid that something bad might happen if he had fallen asleep. his eyes are closed, and he’s almost asleep, until he feels someone grab the hand that was farthest away from richie.

 eyes open immediately, and once he registers who had grabbed it, he almost starts to tear up, deciding against it. “dad.” his voice is barely above a whisper, the lump in his throat preventing him from speaking louder than a whisper.

            EDDIE WAKES UP TO THE SOUND OF A HEART MONITOR BEEPING STEADILY  ,  THE STERILE WHITE OF THE  hospital room making him blink  &  open his eyes slowly against the harsh light.  the hand in his own isn’t his husband’s  ,  but nathan’s  ,  &  he turns his head to the side slowly  ,  blinking.  he doesn’t really remember how he’d wound up here  ,  but it reminded him too much of his childhood  ,  &  if eddie wasn’t so out of it  ,  he’d be anxious  ,  expecting his mother to come around the corner at any moment.  no  ,  she won’t  ,  &  he relaxes slightly  ,  blinking over to his family  ,  expression confused  &  somewhat dazed before he speaks.

                ‘ .....what.....what happened ?? ’

                 IT’S NOT WHAT HE WANTS TO SAY  ,  BUT IT’S WHAT COMES OUT WHEN HE TRIES TO SPEAK  ,  &  eddie’s movements are cautious  &  slightly clumsy.  he’s still a bit foggy  ,  shutting his eyes tightly against the light before offering his family a slight smile  ,  dry laughter leaving him.
