I find sanitization so interesting because they're basically zombies, but almost inverted zombies. instead of rot and decay, they're unnaturally preserved. like some sort of living taxidermy, they're not in the death part of the cycle of life, they're completely removed from the cycle altogether.
you guys should give all of your characters splatoon verses btw. *hits everyone's muses with the inkling beam*

I wonder if there are any health repercussions for inkfish who do not ink for a while. like they have control over it obviously, but do they start feeling bad if they haven't? does their ink get stale or congeal? do they need to ink?
I think part of Acht's trauma is that they don't know what happened to them. They have an idea, of course, that they spent six years in a small dark room churning out tracks, but anything could have happened in that time and they wouldn't remember it. Kamabo didn't keep good records, so the only proof Acht has of anything that happened down there is the tracks they made, which don't tell much of a story of what was going on around their creation.

As interesting as that idea is, I think Acht's issue is less that their memories are blocked and more that they were never recorded to begin with, so there's nothing to retrieve. OTOH, I could see the argument that Acht's few lucid moments in the metro were when they made music (Acht notes about #35 caught that their mind was "a little hazy at the time" but they still recognize it as a song they made), so if anything were to trigger a memory, it'd probably be that. I imagine either way the memories wouldn't be very enlightening, though; they'd remember laying down tracks in a quiet room, maybe a snippet of thought process with regards to the tracks themselves, but not much else.

a little plot bunny I've had bouncing around in my head for a long while:
a video goes viral on the Squid Internet of a phone recording of Pearl alone at an octarian street festival full on yelling (in her exceptionally loud voice) at a food vendor at some traditional booth for putting wasabi in the food, "you had ONE JOB, you were TOLD no wasabi, I want a REFUND and an APOLOGY and you should be BANNED from selling food if you can't make a SIMPLE MODIFICATION like that right"
and there's some discourse around it, naturally; this inkling princess showing her true colors the second her octarian bandmate is out of sight, that for all her career and fame have depended on Marina's talent and skill she doesn't respect their culture in the slightest, memes about how Pearl (and inklings in general) can't handle spice, etc
and the story comes out that in fact, she had been at the festival with Marina, and Acht. the "no wasabi" order was for Acht, who has a sensitive stomach thanks to sanitization and can't eat wasabi anymore. the reason Marina was nowhere to be seen in the video was because she was off assisting Acht, who was being violently sick in a nearby public bathroom because their food wound up with wasabi in it anyways. so Pearl wasn't yelling at this guy for making her food "too spicy", she was yelling at him for knowingly making her friend sick with an ingredient he was specifically warned not to use. with that context the "controversy" clears up pretty quickly.
(( Iiiii have been slacking here oops. I've been juggling a few things lately and tumblr hasn't been on the priority list. I am still thinking lots about Acht but haven't been writing much oops. ))

All five NSS members each hold out something to the Octoling: Adria has a tiny painting of one of Acht's album covers, Cordelia's got a few assorted desserts, Arius made a few different origami pieces like cranes, flapping birds, and even a few lotus flowers, Julian and Lil Buddy hold out a few homemade candles and metal jewlery they made with scraps they scavenged from the Splatlands, and Angel holds out a small sewn keychain of Acht, it even has small detachable shades and headgear!

Now, Acht was usually a rather stoic person. The shades helped mask what little emotion they did show, and so they often came off as rather cool, something which suited them just fine.
This, though.
"I. I don't know what to say." Even without needing to breathe, it took their breath away. They hadn't been expecting to do much of anything besides lay around and take it easy today, maybe chat with Marina. The sudden outpouring of love from a group they hadn't realized even cared that much was... overwhelming.
They took the offered gifts with a nod and a polite bow. "Thank you. Really. It means a lot." Let alone that these gifts were handmade, that someone—no, all of them—had taken the time and energy to not just get them something but make them something.
It was nice, having a community.
it's not much but the sparkly white box from a certain set of Idols has a set of sparkly fresh DJ headcans and shades, in Acht's size.

Hey, nice. These are some good quality items. Will definitely go in their gear rotation. They make a note to thank the duo next time they speak.
my splatoon fandom hot take is that "oh that's only in the localization so it doesn't count" is a stupid concept. the localization is still official splatoon content. I get it when it contradicts a thing in the original japanese version but if it's just a little random detail, let people have it, jeez.
