A pupil of William Etty, RA (1787-1849), Frost is thought to have been his only follower. Through this association he was also one of the few British artists of the mid-late 19th Century to have explored the subject of the nude in his paintings. The changing tastes and increasingly austere attitudes in the Victorian period meant that nudity wasn't largely well received, and Frost's more chaste compositions were generally more sought after. His later career explored themes around mythology and indeed Terpsichore (the protector of dance) and Melpomene (the protector of Tragedy) were two of the nine muses in Greek mythology, whilst Ariadne was a Greek Princess, mostly associated with mazes and labyrinths because of her involvement in the myths of the Minotaur and Theseu.
