Like Iâm Gonna Lose You | Eleteo
Several hours after arriving at the hospital with an unconscious Elena in his arms, Mateo stood at the door just inside her hospital room, tears stinging his eyes. Naomi and Isa had just gone home after a nurse came through insisting that visiting hours were over and they all needed to go. But Mateo hadnât moved to leave, nor did he move further into the room. He just watched. She was sleeping peacefully now, but looked so small and frail in the hospital bed with all those tubes and wires around her.
He couldnât just leave her there. All alone. What if something happened? What if she woke up? Would she be be afraid? Or upset?
âIâm sorry sir, but you are going to have to leave. You can come back tomorrow at 8am during visiting hours.â The nurse was back.
His eyes never leaving Elenaâs resting form for a second, he objected, âB-butââ
âFamily only after hours. You have to lââ
âBut I am family!â he blurted out without thinking, his voice cracked with desperation. He turned to look at the nurse, his eyes wide and pleading.
Her eyes narrowed as she pierced him with an assessing gaze, something in his expression must have convinced her for she simply nodded once and swept from the room without another word.
Once the nurse had gone, he finally approached Elenaâs bedside. Thankfully the swelling had gone down in her face and the red splotchy patches on her skin had faded. She looked a lot better, and Mateo felt a hint of relief that she was really going to be ok.
Pulling up a chair, he settled himself near her head and reached for her handââ clutching it in his own shaking hands, he marveled at how solid it felt though Elena, herself, felt so far away.
He reached over and softly brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead. âPlease wake up, Elena. Iââ I really need you to wake up,â he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles and continued, âI need you. That hasnât changed, even after all of these months. I know I have a lot to make up for. Please, give me a chance to do it.â Leaning a little closer, he placed his hand gently against her cheek and pressed a feather light kiss to her lips. âI love you, Elena,â he whispered, âeres mi mundo, mi amor.â
Exhausted from the events of the day and the warring emotions raging within, he took her hand and laid his head on the bed beside hers. Closing his eyes, he drifted off to sleep.
