"When I made her for you, I didn't think this was how you'd use her."

You smile sheepishly against your phone. The 'assignment' you gave her was simple; check on Sylus, and maybe you had given her something extra as well to give him. It was nothing really, just some food you had made him so he'd eat.

Yet along the way, she seemed to have spotted something else she wanted to give him. Angling his phone so you'd see, in her beak, she held a bug. One she seemed to try to be offering to your darling dragon.

"It means she likes you," you reason, watching and hearing Mephisto caw loudly in the background, wings flapping wildly. Your own companion screeches in return, extending her own wings to further agitate the other.

Sylus spares the two quarreling birds a glance, before turning to you.

"Mephisto doesn't seem keen on that idea." he takes the wrapped food you had sent, letting a smile coke to his lips, "I appreciate the delivery, I'll be sure to rate it five stars."

"Mhm, you better!" Sylus mirrors your grin, giving your owl a couple more scratches and bumps before sending her on her way back to you.

“It’s hot.”

“Why thank you, kitten.”

You simply roll your eyes, too exhausted from the heat as you were sprawled out across Sylus’ lap.

“Syluuuussss—“ you whine in dismay. He taps at your stomach like a bongo to lighten up your mood.

It was blazingly, excruciatingly hot in Linkon and you couldn’t bear the thought of stepping outside to visit your beloved in the N109 Zone. Despite the promises of a cooler place and a far better AC than what your humble apartment could achieve with a mediocre fan, you stayed at home.

Your boyfriend however, being the ever so loving man, dragged himself through the excruciating heat to reach you instead.

So now, because the two of you are still the couple you are, you find yourself laying across the legs of a half naked, beefed up Sylus, clad in nothing but loose basket ball shorts, you had thrown at him and a sheen of sweat.

The curtains were drawn as best as you could, to lock out the sun, half drunk drinks on the coffee table, the ice now melted, creating a layer of condensation on the glasses, the fan whirring softly, working overtime to provide a breeze. You could feel your bodies sticking and sliding against one another, the skin slippery with the shared warmth, but neither one of you wanting to part and not touch.

“No wonder my hunter couldn’t muster up the strength to get to me, this apartment can barely be called habitable.” His hair bounced slightly with the breeze of the fan, face illuminated by the soft light of your ambient lamps.

“I’m sorry..” you frowned at him in soft guilt, you both handled heat and the sun terribly and he’d come all the way to your place to keep you company in your condemned toaster-apartment.

You could barely apologise, before his nimble fingers pinched your lips shut, making you pucker and pout against them instead. He snickered, dipping his head down to peck your lips affectionately.

“There’s no need for apologies, when I can easily fix your sorrows, kitten.”

And as if on cue:

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Sylus ushered you off his lap to go open the door, the solution to all your troubles.

The delivery man with an AC.

Your whole head feels like it's stuffed with cotton. Moving even an inch makes you whine in pain, nausea settling deep in your stomach, skin nearly on fire.

It's basically hell.

"You should eat something." Zayne's cool hand settles on your forehead, and you immediately sigh in relief.

"M'just gonna throw it up again..." You complain, squirming into his touch. He hums, keeping his hand nice and cool as he presses it into your cheek.

"You might not. You need to give your body some energy to get better." He starts adjusting the pillows, so you reluctantly sit up, despite the immediate wave of vertigo.

Silly snowcrow scenario where Sylus is amicably divorced from his wife, but they had two little twins together that they share custody of. He makes sure they have all the care and support they need, and supports his ex as much as he can (financially, housing, food, in any way she needs)

But he's starting to get back into the dating scene. He misses having a partner, and honestly he doesn't have much in the way of a social life. So he starts using one of those dating apps, not really expecting to find anything lasting, but at the very least he can start meeting people

He comes across the profile of a famous cardiac surgeon, much to his surprise. He reads over the description, raising a brow at the very straight forward answers to the set questions. At the very bottom is the note, "My colleagues forced me to make this."

Sylus is intrigued. The doctor is rather hot, and he's not a patient so there's no conflicts there... Why the hell not, he thinks as he swipes right

Zayne checks his phone during his break. He's gotten several messages from the app, mostly people using really really terrible medical pickup lines, or asking legitimate health questions that he dismissively tells them to see their own doctor about. He looks at the list of people who want to match with him with little interest. Some of them are pretty, yes, but he doesn't honestly have the time for a serious relationship and most of them already sent him those crummy messages

But one profile has him stop his swiping. A handsome man with striking features who exudes confidence. Photos of him working on a motorcycle, setting up a phonograph with an old vinyl, hugging a lion (what?). The first line in his bio says he's a single father of twins, with a warning not to waste his time if they don't like the idea of kids. "Looking for a friend or a date"

He looks over the profile again and again, as though it's an important set of research data. On this whole site full of people looking for sex, maybe a friend is a good start. So he swipes right

He gets back to work and fears the message that may greet him when he returns

Fast forward to their third date

The first date was nice, if a bit awkward at first. They spoke for a while through the app beforehand, and decided on a diner near the hospital Zayne likes. He was embarrassed to buy sweets, but Sylus must have noticed him looking at the fresh display because he encouraged him to get whatever he wants. (And more - Sylus bought him extra macarons to take with him)

Their second date already saw leaps and bounds in their comfort with each other

This one promises to be just as nice as the last two, a peaceful walk around the park, until Zayne gets an apology message. "My ex needs me to look after the kids today. I'm sorry to have to cancel"

He isn't sure what possesses him to reply "Would they be able to join us?"

Sylus apologizes again when he goes to pick Zayne up; it's a reflex with his two boys. The second Zayne is in the car, he's being bombarded with questions from the back seat. Zayne can see the tension in Sylus' shoulders, the grip on the wheel, the glancing over, the worry that his boys will scare his new friend/prospective partner away before they even reach the park. With every question Zayne answers, he can see the tension melt away

Aaaaaand idk what else to say to this rn BUT the twins falling asleep on the way to drop Zayne back off at home. Sylus pulls up to the curb and whispers his gratitude for being patient with his sons. Zayne smiles and assures him it was no trouble, he's dealt with plenty young patients in his time as a surgeon

Zayne's about to climb out when a hand holds his. He watches, heat rushing to his ears, as garnet eyes lock on him, as Sylus brings his hand to his mouth and kisses his knuckles. Another thank you, a sultry "I had a nice time today", and a simple question about when next he'd like to go out

I can just imagine him filling his ex in on the situation during one of their get togethers. She can see the love in his eyes, hear the affection in his voice as he tells her about their dates so far, about how easily he got along with the twins. How worried he was that it wouldn't work out when the twins asked too many strange or rude questions of him. How it felt watching Zayne read to them, holding them in his arms as if they were his own

She has to teasingly remind him it's only been a few weeks. He chuckles and nods, says he knows. "I've only ever felt this way one time before," he says, glancing at her. "I think it worked out alright then, too."

When he eventually introduces her to Zayne, and she says, "Oh, I've heard so much about you!" he can only shake his head with blush spreading on his cheeks and a secret smile

Zayne and Ex sipping tea on the balcony, watching over the yard as Sylus roughhouses with his boys. He's not too rough, though. The twins easily tackle him to the ground when they work together, landing on top of him and pushing at his chest with loud laughter, only made louder when Sylus tickles them off of him

"Have you slept together yet?"

Zayne chokes on his tea and Ex laughs, delighted for having caught him off guard. She hands him a napkin with a smile. He coughs into it. "Not as such, no."

"Well, fair warning: he snores like the devil," she sighs. "I mean, loud as hell. And he's a huge cuddler, so if you need to get up in the middle of the night, forget it."

"I'll keep it in mind," he clears his throat. His cheeks match his ears in tint.

She smirks knowingly, but doesn't say anything else salacious. "Anything else you'd like to know?"

He watches Luke run for the hose as Kieran runs for the knob. Sylus grabs a forgotten frisbee as a shield, even though it only covers 5% of his body. "Were you happy with him?"

"I was, but... I think it's better this way." She takes a sip from her tea, watching as Sylus sputters from a blast of sun-warmed water to the face. She smiles fondly. "I'm glad to have started my family with him."

Hahahha YESSS THE LORE

Ok but very curious now. What are the in-laws like? Especially with the Li family. Feel like that could be a flip up toss. I realllyyyy want them to be supportive of this new family but knowing Asian families....haha that's easier said than done considering most come from quite traditionalist/conservative cultures.

BUT WHAT THE HECK THIS IS FANFICTION THE IN-LAWS ARE GONNA BE 💯 SUPPORTIVE IN MY BOOK.

Can you just imagine the first meeting though. Mr. Li grilling Sylus about career choices, finances, and hobbies (Mr. Li has a love for fishing and ohhhhh boy does he bond with Sylus) and Mrs. Li is enamored by the twins. Luke and Kieran are equally excited to have grandparents or at least new friends to meet (YAY!!). Luke really loves the pastries grandma makes (his hand is already halfway into the cookie jar and Sylus is lowkey panicking at the first meet because this is not a good impression at all, luckily Mrs. Li just laughs and pushes the cookie jar closer). Kieran is fascinated by her collection of Chinese mythology books and zodiac figurines on her bookshelf. He's kinda shy to ask but eventually Mrs. Li notices the poor boy staring at that bookshelf for so long that she brings him over to introduce him to all the cute animals and books 🥺. Mrs. Li becomes storyteller #2 in the family (her soft voice is definitely something Zayne inherited from her and Kieran lovesssss her).

It takes longer for the boys (especially Kieran) to warm up to Mr. Li but they eventually do. They like going on outdoor hiking adventures with him and bringing back fun insects or little critters, always with the intention of releasing them back though (stag beetles are Luke's favorite, meanwhile little geckos/lizards are Kieran's favorite).

Zayne doesn't know when he started seeing Sylus as family, but what he does know is this:

He never knew home could extend beyond his parents until he met him.

He sees it when Sylus is ever patient with his father. Who smiles when he's asked about career prospects and finances, flawlessly presenting a jade dragon to decorate their mantle (Zayne's eyes bug out when he opens the velvet box, where did he get this anyways? His father is rendered speechless). Who leans back in camping chairs during summer holidays, chatting about different fishing lures and prized catches while the twins parade their newest discovery of tadpoles. Who enjoys the silence that stretches in between words, slipping into spaces without questioning why his father prefers the quiet.

He sees it when Sylus marvels at his mother's accomplishments, who simultaneously holds the highest number kyudo medals in her age group and reigns rambunctious children in with her weekly taekwondo lessons. Who steps forward when she presents her bow to him, proudly asking for a teacher and a challenge. Zayne has never seen his mother shine this brilliantly before (it's like time's given her a pass and reversed it just for her, just so she could take another student who enjoys the echo of strings reverberating their song across archery ranges).

He sees it when Sylus gently guides the twins towards his grandparents' shrine, shushing their giggles and slotting incense sticks between their hands during prayer. They're wiggling on the tatami, their little brows furrowing in concentration. Adorable. Meanwhile, Sylus stares. Traces the frame of his grandfather's last photo, as if to memorize, to prize, to claim someone precious. Places a palm upward in front of his grandmother's photo as if she's never left, waiting for someone to hold her hand in greeting. Won't you tell me about your day, my love? Zayne melts a little more when he catches a hymnal whisper that sounds like gratitude and his name.

When he exits the room, the hallways mist and fray. He leans against the entryway—pushing glasses above the bridge of his nose, stifling cresting waves he thought he buried during their funerals.

"You really love him, don't you?" Soft, light, knowing, his mother's touch is a balm to this swelling tide.

He turns, tears carving down his cheeks. Leans into her embrace, accepts the unraveling that somehow takes his breath way yet grounds him all the same.

And this time he can finally admit—Yes, I love him very much.

Oughh @blessdunrest suddenly woke up thinking about Zayne asking Sylus when he would be able to meet Sy's family. And the sudden brief flicker of something that flashes across his face before he smirks in a way that doesn't reach his eyes. "They don't deserve to meet you, snowflake," he says, and it holds so much to it

But like wayy down the line, ring already hidden away and ready, he would like to be somewhat traditional about this and ask for someone's blessing. So he goes over to tea with Sy's ex, something that's innocuous enough that Sylus wouldn't suspect anything goin on. They chat for a bit, exchange pleasantries, before Zayne finally clears his throat and broaches the topic

"I wanted to ask for your blessing to marry-"

"YES!!" He blinks, startled up at her, this woman who just leapt up from her chair to punch the sky. "OH MY GOD, do you know how long I have been waiting for this?!"

But I also love the idea of like

They're laying in bed together, not talking or doing anything, just cuddling as they wind down from the day to go to sleep. Sylus has a thick arm around Zayne's shoulders, lazily trailing his fingers up and down his arm. His other arm behind his head. Zayne uses his chest as a pillow, listening to the strange rhythm of his heart

Sylus breaks the silence. "My parents didn't want me," he murmurs, so quiet it's only because his ear is against his chest that Zayne could hear him speak at all

Zayne looks up at him, all attention on him. "You don't have to tell me anything."

He nods slightly. "But I want to. You've shown me so much of your life... I don't have much to show in return."

Zayne sits up, sitting cross legged, knees still pressed up against Sylus's side. He pulls his hand into his lap, holding it, rubbing soothing circles into it. Sylus stares down at their hands, swallowing down the thick lump in his throat

And he tells Zayne everything: about his parents telling him to get out of the car before speeding off god knows where, about hiding away in an old church, about how he constantly got into fights and became so big and strong to protect himself, about finally being able to go to school and being so far behind everyone else, about getting a scholarship to a tech college, about meeting his ex and finally feeling at home in his skin - it all just starts pouring out of him. He doesn't cry, he's just so angry about it all, frowning into the darkness of their room. But as he gets to the kinder parts of his life, the things he isn't sure what he did to deserve, it softens and his attention goes back to Zayne

"And you... god knows what I did to deserve you."

"You didn't have to do anything," Zayne says, bringing his hand to his lips to kiss his knuckles. "You don't have to earn my love."

"I've been told I'm greedy."

"That's alright. I have plenty to give."

Zayne can see the way Sylus' eyes flicker over his face, before all the tension melts away. All the fear of losing something so good

He sits up, blankets falling down his hips. Reaches out to cradle Zayne's cheek, pausing just to take in this handsome, perfect man, before pulling him into a kiss. "Thank you," murmured against his lips in a relived sigh

Valko who goes to an aquarium with the family when he's still just a pup. He doesn't get the appeal, really. He's sort of wandering, just kinda bored, when he suddenly turns and comes face to face with you

Staring at him through the glass of a tank

Just a young lemurian swimming back and forth and chasing after a wolf pup Valko. Both of you playing, blowing bubbles at him and play growling at each other. Mimicking his ears with your hands, both of your tails wagging

But eventually it's time to leave... He watches over his shoulder as his grandma pulls him by the hand, watching you stare after him, your tail coming to a still, then drooping, as you sink to the bottom of the tank...

He can't visit every day, no matter how much he wants to. And once his responsibilities start picking up, his appearances become less and less frequent, until months, years go by without him...

Until one day. A very busy day at the aquarium. You peter around the edges of your tank, following the current, lost in thought. You see a small shine of light outside and glance over, assuming it to be a flash from a camera. You look away, swim a little bit farther, and stop

Slowly, you turn around, looking again. And...

He's there

He's all grown up. But you know

You're afraid it's just an illusion. A trick of your lonely mind. You swim closer. Right up to the glass. He steps up to meet you...

Everything is still. You don't know what to do, so overwhelmed with emotion. You feel pearls starting to form at the corners of your eyes

And then he mimics you from so long ago. Mimics the act of blowing a bubble and forming it into a heart, tracing the shape over the glass. You laugh, pearls finally falling free even as you try to wipe them away, and blow a proper bubble heart at him

You get to go home with him that same day. Hugging him tight as he rambles excitedly about how happy he is, all the things he wants to show you and do with you, nuzzling against you, tails wagging in sync
