she’d lost count of the number of days she sat by his bed, refusing to go to her new quarters to rest, simply staring as his chest slowly lifted and dropped with his breathing. she’d been excused of her bed rest some time ago and after one night plagued with nightmares in her new bed she found herself by his bedside, practically glued there. she would occasionally reach over and brush some hair from his face or squeeze his fingers in hope to feel him squeezing back, but other than that she kept her space.
they were the only ones left. bodhi, baze, chirrut, kaytoo. none of them had made it out and jyn fought over how she was going to be able to tell cassian when he woke up. IF he woke up. she’d grown up learning how to take care of herself, fighting for her life and pushing people away so she couldn’t grow attached. and despite how strong she’d been before jyn knew she couldn’t keep going without him. she’d lost too many, had too many taken from her. was it too much to ask that he lived? to ask that she didn’t carry this guilt, this burden of being alive, alone?
“ i heard once that talking to someone when they…were like this, that it might help them wake up. i don’t remember where, it’s probably just wishful thinking. but you’ve been asleep for so long there can’t really be any harm in it can there ?? andor — cassian, you gotta wake up. soon okay ??the rebellion needs you. ” i need you.
