Copyrights and Creative Commons

I can't stand the use of copyrights to protect overpriced swill record companies call albums anymore. I don't understand how record companies even continue to operate with fantastic websites like thepiratebay up and running. The advent of Creative Commons licensing is the best change to copyright laws I have seen in my entire 20 years on this Earth. Musicians don't make money selling albums anymore. Live shows and merchandise sold at said shows make you money. Trent Reznor was on to something...

...and the Privilege! Power is the position(s) held by an individual where more power = more people working under you. Privilege is the resources you were born in to and how you used those resources. Media and Information Literacy and my Citizenship Status

Using online resources like the Percussive Arts Society helps to make me a responsible citizen. By using my literacy I have to know when to trust and when to criticize the information presented to me. The personably responsible citizen in me will trust, while the justice-oriented citizen in me will criticize and critique. I wish to maintain my status as an online, personably responsible, justice-oriented citizen by continuing to inform myself about the happenings not only in the percussion world, but the world as a whole through online media applications.

New Media for a New Generation

 New media is the constant connection of individuals to sources of information and the ability to share and create information with people across the world using technologies that were not around during the heyday of print and analog media. Traditional media is time-restricted; new media is not. Growing up, and even to this day, my parents read print newspapers and magazines (like Newsweek). Today, I receive almost 95% of my information through digital means: Online newspapers rather than print ones, listening to NPR online, watching sports online, etc. Nationally syndicated news sources take advantage of traditional and new media.

Bluefin Labs - Real-time TV response

MIT Start-up, Bluefin’s technology claims to provide a picture of engagement with media and its impact on the audience. Through SM scrobbling they’re able to pinpoint which words and images caused someone to do something, and track it back to the product placement, TV show or channel a piece of media was broadcast on. 

 The aim is to learn from qualitative responses, and improve media targeting and placement.

Three Types of Citizens and My Interpretation

The three types of citizens Kahne and Westheimer lay out are all good examples of “good” citizens. There are more than just these three types of citizens though. While the types of citizens presented all tend to promote positive attitudes about citizenship, there are citizens on the other end of the spectrum; those kinds of citizens may want to promote change in a neighborhood but in a less-than-ethical way. These three examples of citizenship are all important for children to learn about. They show the different ways of doing good in a society either in a passive or active way. However, something students don’t learn about in school that happen in “real world” situations are times when a citizen’s moral compass will be challenged and what to do in those situations. I believe I am a hybrid of the three types of citizens: I have done small acts of good for the community like the personally responsible citizen, I have participated and helped organize acts for the community like the participatory citizen, and I have also been taught to think critically of the world around me like the justice-oriented citizen. Unlike what I was taught in school, I am also willing to bend my moral compass at times.

Media and Information Literacy in my Learning Network

As a musician (specifically percussionist) there are many different methods to achieve the same end result. It is our duty as musicians to experiment with different techniques until we find the one we like. Not only is there the information you get from lessons, classes, etc. but there is a growing online community of percussionists who provide information on all aspects of percussion. Even something as traditional as learning an instrument is now susceptible to the onslaught of information we as a culture are exposed to every day. I have to use my Information and Media Literacy skills to pick the best information to form my opinions from. I use online resources like the Percussive Arts Society and their forums to find information to help my musicianship. Using this resource allows me to flex my Media and Information Literacy knowledge by picking the most relevant information to aid me.
